When the kids were small we regularly had "no light nights"-that translated to living in our home without using the electrical devices. A great way to identify the holes in our preparedness .

A bug out bag, backpack with a change of clothes, warm gear, compact sleeping bag, flashlight, bear deterrent, compass, fire lighter and H2O to go! Keep your ID, cash, spare cards in a lockable fireproof container! A 10 liter jug of water which is quick to grab as you evacuate is helpful. Good breakdown of your gear - amazing it all fits in the Jeep.

One thing I'd carry if I was traveling like you are is a case or two, depending on how many are with you is MRE's--Meals Ready to Eat. You can buy them on line. Each pouch has a high calorie meal, matches, and toilet paper. It's been along time and I'm not sure what they are putting in them today. They will last a long time. they are better warm, but can be eaten cold. A chain saw and safety gear are near the top of my list if I was traveling on wooded trails. Twenty miles down a rough road, a tree across the road and no place to turn around could make backing out interesting. A sharp ax is a good idea. I have Bernzomatic gas torch. It's about six inches long and weighs maybe ten ozs. The flame is very hot and you can buy Butane refills. The neat thing about is that it comes with a slide on tip that turns it into a soldering iron. Stock number is ST 2250kc. No I don't have any connection to Bernzomatic. I bought because the incense I burn is hard to light with a regular lighter.

Great episode! Another fire making tool you can use that doesn't take up much space is old dryer sheets stuffed in toilet paper roll. Forgot where I learned, but we know keep a couple of rolls in our camping gear (along with the Vaseline coated cotton balls should we need to start a fire.

Another great video , love the survival bread will have to give it a try . Seriously who could give this a thumbs down ? These empty nest video's have brought out more content with Carrol in it , I hope this doesn't change once the kids are back. After watching her for the last year feed the whole crew day in day out her love for the family is very clear, but she also has a lot to say and seams to do it very well. I have enjoyed hearing her take on things, the kids are very fortunate have such great parents.

Thanks for sharing. I always camped and studied survival skills. Now living on a farm I practice homesteading skills. As you said, this past pandemic mess has started a lot of people thinking about their survival. We were always laughed at as being casual preppers but now we see who is laughing. Great information on being prepared for all emergencies. As a T1Diabetic I have to always be prepared especially on hiking trips and outdoor adventures in remote areas. You should share Pete’s awareness for his T1D emergencies. Great info for all!

Have noticed a number of 4x4 overlander KZfaqrs post vids of what they carry for emergencies. Tend to think folks focus too much on low probability situations. Chuckle to myself when some folks carry enough tools and "emergency" components to build an additional vehicle. Being a former U.S. Marine and retired from Forest Service where most everyone qualifies for wilderness firefighting, annually, I focus on minimizing what I carry being reasonably essential for survival in plausible unexpected situations. Hehe, never considered making a fire as essential for survival. Usually surviving a fire is of much greater concern.

That bread is what we make like everyday... very good with jam or butter and you could make fry bread if you have more oil to do it. Great video! If you every come down to the Navajo Nation again ask for it. lol

Great episode! Solid advice and will take note - I hadn’t thought of oats before! I may add a tin of salmon or sardinessome jerky or as South African’s make dried meat called Biltong, honey because it has medicinal and food benefit’s, peanut butter, some beans, small bottle of alcohol (spirits) for treating wounds, sterilisation and a fire starter too. I definitely liked the idea of making that flat bread that can go along way - great job both of you!

Thank you for this awesome reminder and most excellent suggestions. I appreciated the Spare Food set apart from your everyday food and having a container of Vaseline with cotton balls or makeup pads with a ferrocerium rod. Also the redundancy of extras in your backpack. One change in your necessary list I believe water needs to be first before food. There are some great ways to Help in making water safe that could be in the Spare food box. this was so awesome, love your content and how you shows us how to further the world around us.

The best backup for a bic lighter is another bic lighter. :) The petroleum jelly cotton balls are a classic. Birch bark is very good too, if available where you are. Good job on the video! Always love watching you guys.

Excellent video 👍👍 As a t2 diabetic, I'm quite concerned about the high carb content of survival foods. I'm thinking maybe vacuum sealed dehydrated meats, fruits and veggies would be beneficial 🤔 shelf life would also be a concern 🤔

A lighter is an invaluable tool even with no fuel. An altoid tin is all you need to create char cloth, and char cloth will take a spark from an empty lighter easily

My biggest thing for survival is being able to catch food fish,squirrels,rabbits. In my survival kit i have snare wire fishing line and hooks and provisions to make a fishing rod. In a senario where i lost all my food from a bear, pack of wolves,

Great video ! Gave me a lot to think about . As a 64 year old that grew up in Indian Guides , Cub scouts , Webelos , and Boy Scouts I am pretty well prepared for almost anything as far as equipment goes but I haven't actually practiced a scenario such as that in a very long time and my kids to my knowledge never have . I always carry a wool blanket in my car along with first aid kit and an assortment of tools just driving around town and if I'm going out for a number of days the list gets much longer but it would be a great experience to do what you suggest and spend an evening out camping doing a survival night .

Road Flares work great for starting fires. Plus if things get really crazy..I was taught to light a signal smoke fire, which i would use a spare tire. They will find you for sure.

Volunteering as a firefighter is such an admirable thing to do. I served 23 years in the Air Force as an IDMT/Air Rescue Technician teaching Buddy Care/Survival, EMT courses and CPR for the AHA and Red Cross. I've been a prepper for 35 years at least. I love doing survival exercises on backpacking, bushcraft and overland camping adventures. Funny, I just did a driveway exercise last week pulling everything out of my Jeep SUV. I love following your adventures...so relaxing with a good cuppa coffee.

Well, you don't really need any leavening to make bread. It's a nice to have (and of course dry yeast doesn't take much space), but you can do easily just some unleavened flatbread like tortillas. Flour, water, maybe a bit of fat, some salt - bake on a hot stone or a pan. done. Actually I've made a sourdough starter once when camping, just to prove a point coming out of a heated campfire debate, that you can do this out there in the woods with very simple tools. I wouldn't recommend that though because making a sourdough starter consumes flour and water and you better eat that yourself in a unleavened flatbread.

Awesome episode, so important to think about and plan for the unexpected, especially when we are all so used to being connected, and having any fixes immediately available... a quick drive a forestry road could lead to an issue... we live in the "country" and we keep a basic survival kit in of out truck and suv all year round... just never know when a "beastie" might take you out.... this episode will make us think through our plans further... including a bug out kit...

That was a great topic to discuss, well done. Everybody who ventures into the wood, wether you are overlanding or hiking you need to ask yourself, how long can I survive if I get lost or disabled, and how are rescuers going to find me? Today the search and rescue teams here in Nova Scotia are looking for a hiker who went out yesterday and didn't let anyone know her plan and didn't return. It was -10 degrees last night and was not dressed for that weather.

@@EFRT update, she came out of the woods after 3 days/ 2nights at minus 10c. She got lost when she relied on a single GPS and no back up or phone. Her story can be found on google, search Sarah Roberts. On another note I just retired after 43 years in the Air Force and will now be able to finish my CJ7, Deb and I will be heading on our cross Canada road trip next summer after all this Covid is behind me. We are having to rethink our survival food supplies. Hubby now has type II diabetes that is well controlled with only low carb foods. Rice, bread, oats and wheat flour are not real options. However, nut flours, nut butters, dried meats, high fiber beans as lentils, etc are a start. 🤗🙏🙏🇺🇸🇨🇦

My dad would annoy my mom because he didn't use kindling at home. He always seemed to get it going with a heap of newspapers. At thé farm he'd soak stumps in diesel then light with gas from his chainsaw. Those root systems could take days to burn out. Dad was a Scout leader - so some time in his life he was able to start a fire without man-made help In Scouts or school we made Bannock bread

Great video. An additional item I would add is a book about edible plants for the area you’re traveling in. And flashlights and a mirror so you can make signals to airplanes/helicopters. Another handy tool to get a fire started if you have sunshine is a magnifying glass.

That was a truly fascinating video especially making the fire and the bread. That jam you had looked mouth watering delicious. It looked as good as the Wilkin Tiptree jam made in the UK village I live in, and found in hotels around the world.

They dont ever show the big RV type vehcile they got tagging along with it ? Parked nex to eachother at the Local BOSTON PIZZA right now on vancouver island. March 9th 2021. now bps. Thats survival

Let your audio engineer know that this episode was the first one I was able to hear out of the last five. Just found this channel a few days ago and look forward to watching the series. I usually listen while I’m driving in the car and those last episodes I had a very difficult time hearing you. Great series!

Without watching this video yet, I’m going to hazard a guess as to YES you’re prepared. Why would they make this video otherwise? It would make it seem they’ve learned nothing after years of full time on the road. That seems very unlikely. But let’s find out if my prediction was correct!

One thing i think we overlook is the paper maps, every space faring nation has weapons in space against the treaties, and a couple of shots gps will no longer be functioning.
