Ive got a pretty decent 8500 watt dual fuel generator, added a transfer switch, and had an exterior gas line installed next to a small concrete slab i poured next to my garage. Huge Tornado hit on Easter 2020 and knocked out power for over two weeks. This kept me going easy. I put my important appliances on the transfer switch and most of the necessary lights. I even had internet and my PC running. The entire setup was about $2500. I might add a single battery setup with an automatic transfer switch so that the power stays on. Battery will handle load for a few minutes, then swap to generator. This is a far more effective option than dropping 20k on batteries for 2 days of power.

@kylewest100
@kylewest100 Ай бұрын
@@teejayman215 technically everything is still ran on fossil fuels so that’s not true. Yeah you’ll have to do maintenance on said generator but it’s never going to run indefinitely. I wish these technologies were more affordable. I do want enough power to run my home for a week or two plus a generator. But I’m not forking out the money. I’d like a setup that allows me to run everything just on the back up battery and also have a massive backup battery in a EV truck but unfortunately Elon musk and ever other electric car manufacturer insists on making overly complicated expensive EV’s. I don’t want a truck that can drive itself and has all these electronics. I want a traditional old school truck that’s tuff and simple. I get it electric collates to futuristic but why does everyone have to have these gadgets that don’t really work for normal blue collar people? I want a cyber truck that’s shaped like a regular truck that just has solid axles and a big battery with regular controls. It’d be super cheap to make a bare bones truck I just don’t see why no one makes one. It’d be awesome to have a solar grid, battery bank and EV to run your home.
@teejayman215
@teejayman215 Ай бұрын
@kylewest100 seems your gripe is with the way EV companies are designed. Still, back to this subject. Seems like this generator would be more than self sufficient if you have enough panels and you could even increase the capacity with more of these Delta pro Ultra units. Okay, they're expensive now, but so whatt? Solar tech has jumped leaps and bounds in the last 10 years. Every year it's getting cheaper and cheaper to buy and install neater and better system. You gripped about how expensive this system is, To me it seems like the most easiest-to-install solar system I've seen thus far, and it's so sleek

This basic setup is what I did with a small system from Vigorpool. With just a 1200 watt output, gas furnace, and careful use I was able to get through 3 days of power outage. I did that by only running the furnace at night, and by charging the battery from my natgas generator. To be fair, I just ran on the generator during the day, but really the only thing that was stopping me from staying on the battery more often and just topping off the lil solar generator was a big battery. This Ecoflow system is pretty awesome, but the cost is quite steep.

I have 4kw of Solar and a Power Wall. I can be completely independent from the grid about 97-98% of the time. I use 1-2kwh of utility power a day as I have a minimum charge of about $0.35 but normally I don’t use more than a quarter of my Power Wall’s capacity. So I theoretically could go a couple days without sun or utility power. I bought a Natural Gas generator for those days.

Do you have an interlock on the main panel so when power goes out you manually switch to the inside outlet then plug the dpu into the outlet to power the house? Also can you leave both cable plugged in meaning the inlet to charge and the inlet to power the main panel? The generator selector is that a custom made box? I am assuming when the dpu is powering the main panel you can just turn off whatever circuit you don’t need while running off of dpu? Thanks

Should look into the smart switch and the Eco flow propane genny. With both those installed you can have the smart panel kick the power over at ups switch speeds and when the batteries are low it will auto start the genny for you, like in the middle of the night. Only 2kw but it does fully connect/link with the system. I'm looking at the same system in the next 2-3 years for myself and that's my long term power storage. Propane doesn't really go bad like gas does and the house I am looking at already has a large tank for the stove. Would just need a new line for the genny.

They are rated for 3000 cycles before they lose about 5% capacity per year. So if you charged and discharged this every single day, it would work at 100% for 8.2 years and then start to slowly lose capacity. No one uses it that much though, so I would expect a 10-15 year working life from these.

Is that confirmed that switching the neutral vs not switching the neutral is the only code approved way to do this?
@SilverCymbal
@SilverCymbal Ай бұрын
You can be certain that switching all of them is the best way as it leaves nothing to chance. I did as much research as possible my install and there are lots of people saying it makes no difference as grounds and neutrals are the same but there was info stating that all leads should be switched. There is no specific code that will address this, its likely part of something else as this is a very small demand project. So in the end you have to make your own decision or consult an electrician.

The one quick question I have is How to set it up so that one has an automatic transfer switch for it so that if I am away I'll be ok since the system will be turned on by the ATS. It looks great, though.
@SilverCymbal

You can add thei smart home panel. That completely automates charging, discharging and switching. Its a great option. 100% hands free use and if you have solar input it of course handles charging from that too

Do you know if the Delta Pro and Delta Ultra can be mixed? Can they be connected together in some way?
@mrgizmo7975
@mrgizmo7975 Ай бұрын
Two delta pros can be connected with a dpu to their smart home v2 panel. Two delta pros because you need their individual 120v single phases to match the split phase 240v of the dpu.

At this overall price WHY not just go with a whole-home generator (Ex. Generac or other brand) that can power a home indefinitely and would CHEAPER too!!!???? This PRICE is just NOT a viable option IMO!

In rural areas like mine, a propane generator would deplete a tank in 3 days, and if its winter that also means no heat. Thats also assuming it was full which it wouldn't be. Gas generators cost $500/yr for maintenance plans also. They also run for 30 minuets a week, every week of the year which is pretty annoying. The video here isn't tell you the Ecoflow is the only option but the gas route/built in have caused a lot of issues that peopel didnt expect. I should do a video on this, even just for education as some of it can be an eye opener
@tlteal
@tlteal Ай бұрын
Bingo! This is $15k or more. You can buy an inexpensive generator, transfer switch and call it a day. BTW, the generators do not require that much maintenance at all. Let's not use that as an excuse. Take care of your equipment, maintain your fuel properly and you won't have issues when you need the generator to run/work for you.

I wish this was the answer but it’s not. Unfortunately you need a multiple system approach. If power was only going to go out for a few days you’d probably be fine with a whole house gen.If what many of us think is coming does come the grid will be down often and for extended periods of time. All things break,gen sets and these units included. I have backups to my backups. It all depends what you can afford and how prepared you want to be. My advice is look for used or factory refurbished units with a warranty. Good luck

Its amzn.to/4dpimEL 10 Gig aggregation switch, the greatest bargain in their lineup. Sadly after making a video two monthds ago showing my tplink gear, I had a number of problems and completely switched to Ubiquti. I will have a video pretty soon about my home network disaster and the new setup to show more detail.I have a pretty extensive home built setup with fiber, switches, different building, solar wifi. KInd got out of control but its working super well now.

Since you are running your well pump with this setup, I presume the 240 volt is split phase? Thank you for the real world information.
@SilverCymbal
@SilverCymbal Ай бұрын
Yes. For well pump use these are a dream, since the moment the well isn't pumping you are not using any electricity, compared to gas that you would leave running. Yes its definitely 240 split phase, all pure sine power.

@@SilverCymbal Since you mentioned wasted gas.. I was thinking it may be more useful to use the 30Amp output of my inverter generator to charge the battery rather than power the house. In that way, I can turn the generator off when the battery is full.

OMG, I looked into the system you had and the price.... ouch. For one day of power. Sorry, no way. And then I think of all the batteries like in my laptop and mobile phone and how long they last, etc. I think I stick to a simple generator. Best with propane. Costs a 10th of it and is more than sufficient. I got mine in a shed and it is also not very loud. Just my 5 cents.

The batteries in your devices are a different chemistry than the EcoFlow batteries (LiFePo4 vs. Lithium Ion), the Ecoflow batteries are designed to be able to handle a lot more charges and discharges than a Lithium Ion battery (IIRC, it's something like after 10,000 charges they still maintain 80% of their capacity).
