In September 2017, Hurricane Irma tore through the Caribbean. Two weeks later, another Category 5 hurricane hit. With winds of up to 172 mph, Hurricane Maria caused about $96 billion in damage to the region. The hurricane killed an estimated 2,975 people in Puerto Rico alone.

I was a Muslim until they told me that historically their Islamic God commanded the cloud at that time to protect the Prophet Muhammad from the hot sunlight but obviously anyway their Islamic God not interested to command anything or things in order to protect many cats and many other animals from feeling very painful of being tortured such like being poisoned to death or being beaten to death or being thrown from a tall building or being squashed by a big car until many of those cats including many other animals such like dogs or rats et cetera yelled loudly because of feeling very painful for being extremely tortured like that obviously even all cats and all animals still cannot say do not kill me for food or for clothes or for other experimental purposes scientifically done by many people but all animals have rights to live safely without feeling uncomfortable of being killed or tortured so all animals must be neutered and placed in a place like zoo with people that can help them!

I've only ever been inside of a cat 3-4 hurricane. You can literally fall face forward in the winds & you will stay in place! Scary strong winds.

Hi, Laura here (from the video). Many have expressed that I was driving aimlessly wasting gas/resources... so I thought I'd give some context to the situation many Puerto Ricans faced. Most of us had no choice but to drive every day to source food and water, despite running low on gas. I don't live walking distance from the city, where we were sourcing everything from and looking for cell service to contact our loved ones. And oftentimes, no places were open so we had to drive 30-45 min away from where I live to find any places that could be open or had supplies to begin with. All the streets were covered in debris from the destruction as well, which made it unsafe to venture out on foot or on a bike. Not to mention that there was no power for months, which meant that traffic lights did not work (and most of them got destroyed anyways). So with this in mind, hopefully you can place yourself in our experience and realise that we were not using our resources by choice, but rather, to get through the crisis. Much love.

Thank you for sharing your experience and truly showing how bad the situation in Puerto Rico was after Maria. If I am not mistaken the island is still recovering to this day and more than 3,000 people died in the hurricane; I know several people who weathered the storm and they have also explained the true horror that followed, let alone a lack of adequate government assistance from the US mainland after the disaster. It's really heart-breaking. As an undergrad student with a hobby of tracking and researching hurricanes, I will say that in recent years Irma and Maria in 2017 have not been the only devastating hurricanes in the Atlantic; ever since 2017 storms like Dorian 2019 (destroyed the Northern Bahamas), Iota 2020 (flooded Nicaragua), and Michael 2018 (razed the Florida panhandle) have also occurred, and I could only imagine what the people in those regions are going through. Climate change will only make these kinds of bad storms more common, and I really hope we as humans do something to address and mitigate it especially for the sake of saving the lives of those who live in the Caribbean and coastal regions of North America like you. I wish you the best of luck in your recovery efforts.

Totally agree with you about the situation but you were driving around to obtain footage when you said that so of course it sounds hypocritical and people will point that out. You had already gotten your own resources prior to the storm so there was no need for you to go out driving. Just saying

It was terrifying.. Of course, I fell asleep so I didn't really have to witness for all those hours, but, I remember trying to open the door, it was impossible because the wind was just that strong that it closed harshly on it's own

Back about 2 yrs ago...I had a tree fall on top of my room while I was sleeping and because of where my tv was positioned it saved my life. It was a half inch away from crushing my body n I had to crawl from under it and I lost all my belongings that meant a lot and were sentimental. Google “I’m just thankful to be here Franklin tree falls Virginia”and it will pop right up. God bless these people and EVERYTIME it storms,my cat and I have PTSD as it almost killed him too. So thankful to be alive.

@@retrospecative2454 Thank you guys,the reason I told this story is to put awareness out there that if there IS a tropical storm coming your way EVEN a category 1,EVACUATE and bring your most important belongings to a hotel and your animals because you never know what can happen. After I crawled from under the tree, I’ll never forget the look on my mother’s face. PTSD is with me 24/7 now. Let’s get this message out to evacuate as soon as possible. The tree fell because it got struck with lightning.❤️🙏🏼💯blessed to still be here with minor injuries.

Now try experiencing that around 20 times a year. Just this October and November, the Philippines was hit with _four_ typhoons in a span of more or less three weeks. No one's talking about it on international media though.

That's horrible as well. International news in the US will always come after national news, though. 3 years later, we know the impacts of these hurricanes were more than the storms themselves but also the lackluster response. Puerto Rico is a part of the richet country in the world yet people went without power for months, no running water, and a President throwing tp at them. This caused one of the largest migrations of Puerto Ricans to mainland US in recent history. That also bumps up the relevance of it for us.

You’re right back in 2009 the super typhoon obliterated the Philippines. Where my sister lived the flood was touching the roof where she lives. She had to escape through where the air condition is mounted. Witnessing dead bodies floating around while giant crocodiles were feasting on the dead bodies. This is before my cousin got to her by a rubber boat at night.

I lived through the whole thing. Lost my house, and in my home town we had no power for 5 months and 15 days. Thank God FEMA helped and got my house back.

I love how no one's talking about Dominica '-') It hit us at night and and was crazy Power out for like 1month in the city, 7 months for me, and about a year for full destoration. Water wasn't really affected because our system is underground (besides the river crossings). Internet was another story by itself. I think most of us lost someone dear to us (if not all). 3pm on the east and precisely 8pm on the west. I think the most interesting part was the stories we heard at school from the teachers and fellow students (like a guy who had to hide in a barrel on his porch because the Roseau river flooded his house) Got lots more to add but I think that's enough for now Peace✌

This videos has brought memories of my worst nightmare. I remember being at my house in Utuado, and so many people died or committed suicid*. It was horrible. Plus all our mountains were destroyed. In tears

@@shayalynn thanks for asking! Puerto Rico is doing ok since the hurricane. They are maybe some families STILL with blue tents because of government corruption but, it’s a maybe. Utuado is different since but is doing nice too.

@@richardfraderagonzalez9478 It's really unfortunate that the United States has not stepped up to provide more economic support and relief - or at least even awareness in the media, yes mostly due to political agendas and government corruption. it is awful that people are unwillingly subject to it. It won't last forever though. Our God will bring justice. He hasn't forgot about the needy or those who are broken hearted. I can testify of that.. and while you guys go through this, you are the people who are actually grower stronger and stronger with these trials - even if that means low resources and less answers on how everything is going to be okay for you, your family, and everyone else who is facing this. hope is the anchor for the soul. there is something precious that is being built in yall that will last forever, that the majority of the US will most likely never have because we haven't been put through the fire like that.. (there are exceptions though of course.) If something really bad happens in this world, who is really going to be the strongest and wisest to survive? I live in Tennessee by the way, and I'm considered to be in the lower to medium social class - but even then, I consider myself very privileged to have just a home over my head, a meal, etc! Glad to hear though it's gotten better but wish it was that way for even just that one family experiencing loss like that.

Living on an Island with houses made out of Concrete and Limestone the only Hurricanes I take Seriously are 3 and up. Mostly 4 and up. You just get used to them.

Most of the houses in the US and Caribbean are made of cardboard. In Europe, no one would give a toss as all houses are either made of bricks or concrete or a mix of both. We would need something beyond the scale to damage our houses.

I just feel like, there’s so much missing to show. I live on the east coast of PR the eye was at one point above us. The last person a talked to was my dad who lives in the US watching everything unfold and sent me the image of the storm just making land fall and I lost signal for over a month. Roads blocked, lines everywhere, etc. Among us on the neighborhood we cleared out the street to allow emergency workers to pass to the rest of town, there were also so many helicopters in the air at once it was incredible. We lost part of our food but had enough to hold on until some supermarkets started running on their generators and the National Guard started distributing food via MRE’s. Universities starting in November without power, students at the time like myself having a hard time to study, even having to apply to grad school by hand. I could go on, but it’s one of those moments where no matter how many videos you watch, being there will be the only true feeling of the moment. Over 4,000 people died, not by the direct impact of the storm but by the aftermath, the slow process of recovery and many people that couldn’t make it to hospitals. I wish we don’t go over this again.

I was born and raised on the shores of the gulf coast. In the Galveston, Freeport area of Texas. This video reminds me of all the storms in my life that I didn’t evacuate for. Mother Nature is no joke. Much love and prayers to everybody in Puerto Rico!!

Underground electrical lines are more complicated than just burying cables. Even more than making sure they're safe. They are less capable underground. Power handling goes down. Safety goes down.

I was there in Dominica when Maria hit. I only just started my 1st semester of medical school and was there for a month before it happened. I was on the island 2 weeks post-hurricane before transported by boat back to St. Lucia then flown back to the States. It was a pretty wild experience, to say the least.

I survived hurricane 🌀 Irma in Sint Marteen, I will never forget the howling of the wind! The snapping of branches from trees, the roofs being torn away from houses! When I went out the next morning, I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw total devastation! So many people lost their lives! Anyway lucky for me I was evacuated to curaçao, as I was on holiday but how awful and painful it was, to see what the locals had to endure! Always give thanks to the Lord Almighty 🙏🏾for he has a way of getting us back on our feet!

Bruuh it's been almost three years already and I remember the many months I couldn't even take a shower in Puerto Rico with no electricity. Funniest moment tho was when a church in the next town reportedly had water back, we all flocked for the potential of getting water. I was mid shower full of soap and the damn water ran out. I was rinsing myself by collecting the tiny drops in a cup cause I wasn't going any longer smelling like that. good times/s

i am flight attendant and worked the rescue flights in and out of PR and i will never forget how quiet an airplane of 200 customers got when we took off and people crying. PR is now my home and i cant wait to be there tomorrow

That night Maria made landfall was the longest night of my life..our life.sitting in the bathroom listening to the roof come apart, the water coming in from everywhere. But the hardest part was not knowing about my family! Had it not been for the grace of God, if the storm didn't take you, the days ahead would have. Thank God that we made it through

Been through many growing up in Guam. Its scary listening to the howling of the winds & hearing the rain hit concrete at 100+ MPH. Occasionally you'll hear a loud boom or thud maybe from a large tree, or branch, perhaps your neighbors patio set/Dog flying by👀...then again at the same time, its comforting if you're with family all safe inside your home with a big pot of soup on the portable gas stove because power, gas, water, cable, etc have been cut off prior to it hitting to prevent unforeseen damages to homes/businesses. I liked it....part of my childhood since 97' when Super Typhoon Påka hit Guam 2x!

In times like that, you have to make sure you have everything you need. One thing to look into is having a cheap electric vehicle. Like a scooter or a bike that can be used to nibble your way around things. You also want to have things like backup batteries, like solar power. These are things you do if you live in a bad area. I do not live in a bad area, but I still have some of these things to make sure. I started getting them when I was in some bad spots in life. Like when I lost power for three days.

Wow. This brings me back to when I was growing up in PR and hurricanes were the most terrifying thing ever. Thankfully we never had significant loss like these recent storms have done damage , so this whole video is just triggering me and also putting so much into perspective

Im frome Puerto Rico and been heres since 4 years old and now im 25 soon to be 26 and I surivided maria and trust me if you ever not been in a hurricane just stay on your wishes to not be because this is no fun, on my area we spent six month almost seven without power and that was when i started college for my bachellors degree in psychology and when you understan PTSD with a hurricane category five hitting the island for almost 30 something hours you will cry trust me you will! And seign my mother cry because we told her to take refuge because me and my father were holding a window for eight hours (me a window) and (me a window) because of the power of the wind was to strong and we have wood on the windows and doors but we ran out of wood for other windows, but maria was something else for our generation of Puerto Rico even the elderly people like my grandfather father was impresed from maria. (Excuse me for me writing on english)

I live through this in Carolina, Puerto Rico. Let me tell you it wasnt fun AT ALL!! My roof almost came off, my apartment was flooded, my girlfriend and i spent her bday removing water and just trying to survive. Went 3 months with no electricity. It was a horrible experience.

The aftermath of this hurricane was just as bad as the hurricane it self. We were almost chasing after gas trucks, waiting hours for ice, the power was restored after almost 2 months( from where I live) ... so it's not just the hurricane, it after the hurricane that's most frustrating.

Global warming is real, I live in the Philippines we used to deal with typhoons almost 20 plus yearly I mean it's just typical for us hitting by typhoons but in the past 10 yrs we notice that typhoons becomes more violent and fatal the recent one is October this year typhoon rolly "Goni" with a highest wind upto 315 km/h which cause the southern part of luzon devastated

In the island the restrictions on the metro area was not as bad as I the mountains. We didn't have power for more than 9 months. We would have to drove one hour to go get groceries.

I was on PR when Maria happened, literally was like the cartoons, when the wind wants to blow the door out but it doesn't. Everything was DESTROYED. The mountains looked like a big fire happened, they where all brown and without trees. It was crazy. The wait for gas and food was crazy too! And to find weed OMG it was hard cause there where no signal for phones. At the end of it all I had fun after it happened. I cuted trees from the roads, I helped people, I showered in a river, loved it but I know lots of people where having it BAD.

I would love to see a documentary about hurricane Dorian hitting the bahamas ... the hurricane literally just stopped above abaco for 24 hours... and was a cat 5 but many ppl say it was worse than that ... there were sharks inland . The people of abaco are still living in the destruction from Dorian over a year later. Many people lost their lives because of Dorian in the Bahamas. 🇧🇸🇧🇸🇧🇸
