This is my first Video Essay, Please be nice. I Know there are some mistakes with editing but by the time I noticed I had already posted it, sorry.
In this video, we explore the themes of the hit TV show Yellowjackets, which has captivated audiences with its unique take on the survivalist genre. We delve into how the show challenges traditional gender roles, portrays the impact of trauma on survivors, and uses symbolism to convey deeper meanings. With a predominantly female cast, Yellowjackets offers a refreshing departure from the stereotypical representation of women as helpless victims in need of male protection. The show's portrayal of trauma is sensitive and realistic, emphasizing the importance of acknowledging and addressing its long-term impacts. Through the use of narrative devices and symbolism, the show offers valuable insights into the complex ways in which trauma shapes individual experiences and identities. Join us as we deconstruct the themes of Yellowjackets and explore its impact on the survivalist genre.

I like that this survival story doesn't shy away from the gory, the ugly, and the downright mundane aspects of being a group of woman isolated. They depict menstruation, dumping out the bucket they use for defecating and peeing into, the bloody horrors they endure after the crash, the emergency care they apply to wounds, the way they butcher whatever animals they come across, and the ways they try to keep each other entertained and busy as they wait for rescue. A lot of shows would gloss over this, the necessities that women have access to in the US, but have no ability to purchase when they run out, such as maxi pads or tampons. The ingenuity they have to come up with things on the fly, and relying on what little wilderness knowledge they have in order to keep each other alive. I like that it also doesn't lean too heavily into the mysticism or supernatural side of the show to explain some of their actions and motivations, because it would be a convenient way of ignoring key character development, or driving plot points through dream sequences and hallucinations. That's what keeps you guessing about the trajectory of the show, is how much of a push did those girls really need to resort to unthinkable violence against one another? Are their actions driven by some fearsome, faceless entity or spirit out in the woods, or is it really the effects of starvation, dehydration, trauma, and isolation that make them all turn primal? There's no convenient answer to this, and raises questions in the audience - what extent would you go to in order to survive, and at what point does cannibalism become a viable/moral option? Where is that line between civility and humanity from the more animalistic and savage part of ourselves, and do you really need that external force to push you across it? It's an unsettling thought experiment, but one Yellowjackets doesn't appear to shy away from. Regardless, I'm totally engrossed in it.

I thought this was a fabulous essay. I really enjoyed it as I’ve been enjoying the show! It was interesting. How are you added all the references if you want to do deep dives on our own of all these wonderful women scholars, we can also do that which I thought was cool.

Is this essay posted somewhere as a paper? I would like to properly cite it as a scientific source in a paper I am writing in college about monstrous feminine archetypes.

I'm on episode 3 of season one and the show feels like someone said "what if we took Lord of the Flies, set it in the Pacific Northwest and showed how the survivors grew into adults."

Interesting points, and I'm glad you cited specific feminist scholars. I think I would have been more engaged in your analysis if you hadn't kept running a loop of unrelated visuals over your narration. Definitely give video-making another shot, but give some more depth to your individual points instead of repeating them over and over. And there's no shame in taking down a video and fixing the editing errors! Best wishes for next time!

Dude...if you say 'gender roles ' one more time....part of a true analysis is editing out reductive material. Not bad, but you need to flush out the themes and ideas and not rely so heavily on 'buzz words' and overly blown out, yet still shallow, modern theology. It came across as a Gen Z love story to basic virtue signaling without depth or fully explored notions...which only came off as a grandiose and gratuitous pandering to the unimaginable level of 'hero by subversion' tropes that have been over done in recent years. The 90s were an age of 'Girl Power' that the younger generation acknowledges yet doesn't quite grasp. That would have been an interesting parallel rather than the exploited 'women are oppressed, gender roles bad' mantra that now seems to be a anchor to every 'analysis '. I think you have talent, but you need to challenge yourself as well as the beliefs you are implying throughout this depiction. This is just my personal critical critique.
