Chiba-Makuhari, JAPAN - 1994 World Figure Skating Championships, Ladies' Free Skate - Surya Bonaly of France skated her heart out, but her lack of smooth landings on her jumps and the lack of polish in her choreography may have kept her Artistic Impression marks low, and that was enough to just cost her the Gold Medal here. She would finish in 2nd Place for the 2nd year in the row.

Bonaly was incredible. Yuka, her competitor, was incredible too. If it weren’t for other times judges seemed to be biased against her, then her just missing this win wouldn’t have seemed so harsh.

Apples and oranges. It's the classic "Athlete vs. Artist" competition that has been around since the Debi Thomas Vs. Katarine Witt days. I think they both skated spectacularly. Bonaly had the technical edge while Sato had the artistic one, and artistry tends to be what the judges go for.

+Camille McKenzie I don't like that simple and false dichotomy of athlete v. artist. I also don't think Surya really had the technical edge. What she did do well was incredible (double axel from stand still and that 3/1/3/2 combo), but she really only had four clean triples in this routine, severely underrotated that last triple toe, double footed that first Lutz, fell out of a spin, didn't really hold her spins long, severely telegraphed her jumps, had no content in-between her jumps, and had a ton of posing (two big sections in a 4 minute routine to catch her breath) in this routine where she didn't skate. Those are all technical/athletic issues.

Exactly. I like Surya but there is no flow or intricacies before her jumps, it's like she moves and then sets up for a jump and stops everything until said jump is complete. She is definitely a dynamo when it comes to jumping but I was always waiting for her to connect everything and have a good solid performance that is technically AND artistically good. I heard she used to be a gymnast before becoming a skater and I bet she was great at that too.
@harveywolfe8787

Bonaly was way overmarked technically for this skate actually. Her triple loop was practically a fall, her triple flip- triple toe was badly underrotated. She had less clean triples than Sato in addition to weaker spins and much weaker footwork. I didnt agree with her getting higher technical marks than Sato at all.
@harveywolfe8787
@harveywolfe8787 7 жыл бұрын
Agreed and her technical marks were WAY too high for this performance which was far from her best technically. I think some of the judges honestly tried to gift her the win here as a sort of career achievement prize, and thank goodness she didnt win and it is a joke she honestly thinks she was robbed.

Surya has always been one of my favorites, having said that her artistic mark always suffered I feel because of having her mother coach her rather than having a top coach to help her with her basic skating bad habits like her edge work. Technically a beautiful skater, artistically needs much improvement. Hey a 9 time French National Champion, 5 time European Champion, 3 time World Silver Medalist, 3 time Olympian, finishing 4th, 5th, and 10th, is not a bad career at all. Many skaters would dream to have accomplished this.

Let’s be honest: the skater who were called “non elegant”, Surya, tonya... were only physically more muscular. Therefore they were more powerful and didn’t respond to the idea of “fragile” that is the pendant of “grace”. This is a biological discrimination. Balance the judging with a “power” note and they win.

LOL They would eat her alive on her lack of quality, poor spins, absent footwork, awful skating skills, and lousy interpretation of the music. It would be difficult for her to even qualify for finals let alone win under the current scoring system. She was lucky that she skated in at a time when you could just pump up your difficulty score with poorly executed triple jumps and have the judges randomly give you some decent artistic marks because you’re “daring.”

3:06 - This section of her program was probably where Surya lost the competition. In any beginner skating lesson, they teach you never to do "toe pushes" -- using the toe pick to move you across the ice -- but to glide. Yet and still, Surya travelled the entire rink in a series of toe pushes at a World Championships, no less. It magnified the notion that she didn't know how to use the blades of her skates to produce speed and flow -- the so-called "quality of skating" Kurt Browning was commenting about. Yuka Sato, on the other hand, flew across the ice with effortless speed and control. Also, there was real choreography in her program. However, there were things Surya did that were better than Yuka. For one, Surya had a complete arsenal of jumps. Also, she had correct edges, which Yuka did not (her flip was on an outside edge). Moreover, Surya had more difficult spin positions. That said, Surya did telegraph the entrance to her jumps and her spins were neither very centered nor fast. I think the judging that night was appropriate. Honestly, it could have gone both ways (it was a 5-4 split decision). The artistic component scores were the tie-breaker, therefore Yuka -- who had better skating skills -- edged Surya out of first place.

Although I can agree that Yuka definitely won this World Championships, I'm not a fan of the majority of the language used in this comment section for Surya. If you look at Surya's performances each passing year till 1994- 1988-1989-1990-1991-1992-1993, she was clearly not doing as great in the beginning when it came to her overall skating. However, each year she improved very much and was among the best of the world to Medal (very detailed at her European Championships victories). This performance, although not perfect, was far greater in technical content than any other woman in this event in 1994 hands down. Yes people can nitpick the basics and the quality but it still doesn't invalidate the fact that she had a greater performance to place second place over many other women who didn't perform as great as her on that day. Lastly, there are people in the comment section who mentioned that she should have protested in 1993 when she placed 2nd to Oksana at the Worlds. I personally believe no matter what year Surya protest on the podium, some people would have still outcasted her as an outsider, saying she's ungrateful etc simply because they didn't like her or her skating or both to begin with.
@flightoflightning2505

Okay you know, reading through this comment, I agree with her being a profoundly excellent technician. I think she, Ito, and Yamaguchi were the only women in the early 90s who did different combinations, like 3F-3T. I absolutely agree was robbed in 1993 (which I think was the best version of this program imo) I wished she had worked on edge work earlier on in her career, she would have definitely done way better. Considering she came into FS only two years before figures were removed says a lot. Every other skater, Harding, Kerrigan, Yamaguchi, Ito, trained figures in their early career (Ito was a junior then) so they already had good control over their edges. I feel like that put Bonaly at a disadvantage, especially because she was coming from her mom, who was also her coach. Suzanne Bonaly was very strict on her child, she was like a French version of Marjorie Chin. Suzanne also did not have prior ice experience and placed Surya in tumbling when she was a child, which probably explains why Surya was so stiff in her early career.

The second mark is called "presentation" and it includes things like speed, the overall look of the program, edges, choreography, costume, etc. IIRC, Bonaly refused to wear tights and I think there was a deduction for that. She didn't point her toe during spins or spirals. All choreography stops when she's set to jump. Frankly, given the amount of deductions the judges could have taken off the second mark, they were actually quite generous.

Was there even tights in her skin tone back then? Because from my understanding, there wasn't that much options for dark skin women skaters back then and even now in the modern era so perhaps it wasn't a viable option for her.

Absolutely, either way it's her turn in the way figure skating skaters in the world level know that you aren't given the 14th ranked Oksana in the previous soviet national and Ballet on ice no combination is a required for free program and awful novice level spinning. A novice outfit is not supported by winning the Isu holds the accomplishments and recognition of the ranked Surya in comparison no previous Oksana the 93 1st year Surya has a silver medal in the world and accepted it unhappy with it.. and then Yuka in this event has a better chance to beat Surya bonaly than Oksana in this event in the Lillehammer games 4 week prior Surya 4th in the Olympics and Yuka 5th top 2 in attendance for this title, but it wasn't fair in 2 years ,so it was a 19 year old upset probably pressure from the federation and ger mom in definitely the Achilles injury supported by 9 hours in training punishment to her daughters body as super human strength as Surya has , and the next year Chen lu didn't rotate 1 full triple anything. Badly undrrotated jumped.. still beat Surya at 13 I watched with Paula my godmother when Surya landed the 3lutz I said was looking at our new world championship winning Surya.. it is political and unfair as that system wasn't fair but treated differently as championship ranked elite athletes if Surya wasn't good enough where her record speaks opposing the case of training with a top level coach consistently and choreography. Imagine how much better? But u can't have it both way. Imp

No, she actually landed fewer clean triples than Yuka. Her triple loop was basically a fall, and the triple toe at the end of the triple flip had only 2.3 rotations so she had only 5 triples to Yuka's 6 in addition to being much worse in spins, footwork, speed, choreography, stroking, everything else. It should have been a blowout win for Yuka, with Surya at best a very distant 2nd, and Surya came close to winning only due to the anti Asian racism against Asians.

Should she have won gold? Surya had more difficult elements and mightier jumps than Yuka Sato. On the other hand, there were a number of obvious flaws - problems with two spins, hand on ice after triple loop, a lack of smoothness and elegance. Bonaly had this weird hitch in her body movement right before a lot of her jumps and it always bugged me. I completely understand being upset about the loss, but the reaction was not appropriate. Just my viewpoint, though. I was never in her shoes and was never a skater, either.

She's a great skater, but no way should this have been Sato. To start, Surya was not a strong spinner and you can't see that in several places in this program, especially the hot mess of a spit spin. I love her power, but she was not on the same level as Sato during this Championship.

I don't think the 3L would have made much of a difference. Although it might appear as though she gave a decent skate here, she actually had a LOT of problems with her jumps as Kurt noted--with two-foot landing, cheats, long telegraphs, etc. etc. Of course, there was no choreography, style, artistry speed or basic skills to back anything up. It would have been a sad moment for the sport, had this performance won the world title.

@@valerieteti1755 I agree she is WAY overrated. I am just saying she deserved silver here since the field sucked. Again who else could have deserved it. I love this woman, she is truly an amazing idol. Her choice of song is one of my favorite pieces and I really enjoy watching the performance she puts on. It usually pisses me off when the judges allow some bias in how they percieve female skaters to dictate how they deal out her scores. There are moments when I believe she deserves a higher placing on the podium than what she gets.

She may have been robbed of winning the 93 Worlds, but man was she super overscored here. She didnt even jump very well here, messing up atleast 2 jumps with big errors. Her technical marks were way too high. Sato should have beaten her on both sets of marks, and that she lost gold on only a 5-4 split is a farce. Those who say she deserved gold here should be gassed and lit on fire for stuipidity.

@@Angel77300 Surya's only good elements are her jumps, so for her, the technical is only about jumps. So if she messed up some of the jumps as she did here, what else is there to justify such high marks. You are actually right that technical isn't only about jumps, which just makes Surya super overscored technically even more, when Sato destroyed her in all other technical elements like spins, footwork, and spirals. That is an argument against Surya, not for her.

As a former judge in that time period, I can tell you the most judges did not see Surya as anything more than an acrobat on ice. She had weak basics : horrible edging, sloppy spins, and no connecting moves. The jumps had little flow and she telegraphed everything. I can assure you that there was no way any of the judges would give her a title ( unless it was an all European panel). I had judged her before and although jump wise she could be spectacular, artistically I always thought she was quite weak and her choreography and music choices were always inferior to the other ladies of the time. Where she improved was in her SP, she was able to fake it and not be as obvious in her lack of substance. But in the LP she was always, in my opinion, not good enough to be on the podium. Except in 1994 worlds against a very weak field.

If racism was present then Debi Thomas (also black) would not have become WORLD CHAMPION in 1986. I'm here and if I had put in my entire life and soul into skating - and outscated another girl and didn't get the metal - and I'm sure it was because of the color of her skin - I'd refuse the metal too. I take back my first thoughts of judgement. Poor thing. It's got to be horrible. So glad she backflipped on them - MIDDLE FINGER UP!! Damn those people who judged her for her skin color. Hope their families are cursed for infinite generations and may have the same experiences in life to remind them over and over what they did to this poor little girl. :(
