Blackwell and SCI-FI-LONDON were hosts to this exclusive appearance by Susanna Clarke. She was being interviewed by her friend, the writer Neil Gaiman.
The event was sponsored by THE OBSERVER and took place at UCL Bloomsbury in London on 25 September 2007.

Her explanation of where she got the fairy lore is very much what I expected. I loved Briggs' work on fairies, and all the footnotes in Strange & Norrell reminded me so much of the old (literal) fairy tales and their bizarre nature. She has a real knack for taking the spirit of magic and fairies, and running with it to create her own mythos, and I love it. Maybe why she resonates so well with Neil's work too.

just finished js and mr n-what a great book-what a great writer-the amount of work that went into that book is pretty staggering.

@@voices4oppressed lol does an author need to have a dozen books to be a favorite?

@@mshollydolly2013 one word has made many to fall in love, one poem has made many hearts to beat for it and certainly, one story from a great writer is enough to make the mass of people to live by it... 😁😂

Can't believe this is the only video interview of her going at the moment. Hope to see more. Perhaps with her next book. Whenever that will be. As far as comment, slightly baffled that she takes her glasses off when she's reading but puts them on when she isn't. Is that the result of a spell that went wrong?

Some glasses aren’t suitable for reading. It really depends on the prescription.

@@oxoelfoxo It looks like the one for Waterstones was actually done for initial publication and they just reuploaded it for the paperback release. Frustratingly, nobody asked her in either interview how the JS&N 'sequel' is progressing. Apparently her next book will be set in Bradford and concerned with similar themes in Piranesi. Not that I didn't like Piranesi, but the world of JS&N has all my love.

I heard that she has been working on the sequel of Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell since 2004. Since it has been more than a decade since then, the book must be close to completion.

yoroshiku I do hope that is the case, although in this article from 2005 (www.bookslut.com/features/2005_09_006537.php) she says that her writing has slowed because of ill-health, and even in this video interview she says she's not well.

+yoroshiku Unfortunately that seems unlikely. She was working on a tale that follows a few years after the end of the first book but focusing on the lesser characters after Englands magic has returned.

I hate to think that she isn't going to write another book. She looks nothing like author's photograph in the book. She not feeling well? Sad to hear. Her books are like large bricks, put together one grain of sand at a time.
