Susie Goodall's sailboat was pitchpoled and dismasted in the 2018 Golden Globe Race. She was 2,000nm northwest of Cape Horn. The English solo sailor activated her EPIRB distress beacon at UTC 11AM on December 5, 2018.She was in fourth place of the 2018 GGR sailing race for 32-to-36-foot sailboats. She is the fifth racer to see her boat dismasted and the fourth to signal for rescue. Other dismasted Golden Globe Race sailing captains were Abhilash Tomy, Gregor McGuckin, Are Wiig, and Loic Lepage. The Golden Globe Race had 18 competitors leave Les Sables d’Olonne, France on July 1, 2018. After Susie's dismasting only 5 racers plan to continue in the solo, non-stop race for 32-to-36-foot sailboats. Goodall's DHL Starlight is a Rustler 36 and is taking on water through deck leaks opened up from the pitchpole. A ship the 38,000 ton 190 meter Chinese container ship is en route. Goodall suffered a head injury and was knocked out immediately after the accident. The battery system is believed to be damaged and she will soon lose electrical capabilities. The rig is totally destroyed.
The GGR press release said:
"British yachtswoman Susie Goodall was pitchpoled and dismasted in the Southern Ocean some 2,000 miles west of Cape Horn today. A distress signal was first picked up from her yacht by Falmouth Coastguard at 11:00 UTC, who then alerted Race Control and the Chilean Maritime Search and Rescue authorities responsible for this sector of the South Pacific.
Goodall, (29) from Falmouth UK, and the youngest competitor in the Golden Globe Race, was lying in 4th place at the time, riding out a ferocious storm with 60 knot winds and massive seas aboard her Rustler 36 yacht DHL Starlight."

Damn! I was routing for her too. Glad to here she is ok and the hull/deck survived. Let's hope her rescue is not too long. Thanks for posting LINUS. This is defiantly becoming a demolition derby. With the slower speeds and no weather routing options they are getting caught in rough conditions. I assume her engine crapped out too, I did not hear on that. I think her drogue was from the stern which I think is preferred to a bow into the wind type. Ran sailing rigged a stern mounted drogue for their trip to Alaska, same as he has used years earlier on a 30' boat in a southern ocean trip to South Georgia island. In really bad condition I gather these may be better than a bow drogue which is more of a heave to option. Down wind with drogue under bar poles is less strain on boat ......but for Susie the line broke so she went too fast down the waves I assume. Tough stuff. Cheers Warren

Sounds like her batteries may not be in good enough shape to start the motor. Staying warm is going to be the serious challenge at this point. Was there any mention that she may have some tools for cutting away the rigging? Getting the other boat rafted up next to her could prove to be extremely difficult.

harrygibus they do have an auxiliary motor. But they are usually limited in the amount of use while in the race. Running to charge batteries or for emergencies. In her case the rigging could foul the prop if it’s not clear.

The Jordan Series Drogue failure Capt. Linus Wilson mentions could have partially been a result of shock loading. This is when rode becomes too slack and then suddenly tightens up like a cable. Several media sources and suppliers of the JSD recommend 10 to 15 pounds for this product. According to the inventor this is not enough weight. Jordon recommends 35 to 50 pounds on average to limit slack rode. Several concerned customers are now reporting on the sailing forums how the JSD is designed for one-time use. This might also contribute to breakage. Unfortunate since Susie was so close to completing her journey.

Some ridiculous comments here. A brave and obviously capable woman doing what hundreds of other sailors have done before her. She's probably lived more in her 29 years than many in their entire lives. This race is on the high seas; mariners take care of each other. No public is paying for her rescue and no country can prohibit someone from participating in such an activity.
@kevinfisher1345

@kenetted Pfft. I doubt that at all, am sure she did very well. Those are tough conditions that would challenge any sailor. Sounds like the line broke on the drogue and IF so is not much one can do. Imagine your auto and line for breaks snapped which would leave you with no breaks and more than likely ending in an accident. This would be like stating you did not handle that accident very well. Which would be complete rubbish. Sailing in those extreme conditions like roaring 40's, do it enough and sooner or later the ship is bound to be rolled over. It is going to happen and is just part of the risk, just like motorcyclists that ride often enough, sooner or later they are going bite the bitumen. Just part of the risk.
@kevinfisher1345
@kevinfisher1345 5 жыл бұрын
@kenetted the best acknowledged sailors have had their boats rolled in those southern seas. Storms are unpredictable, ever changing conditions and that area is simply risky to sail regardless of the experience or sailboat. Yet you seem to think you know everything ... yea mate. The reality is storm sailing tactics is highly debated amongst even the best ... there is a reason for this, because storms are not all the same. Each boat is not the same. What may work in many instances, will not always work in every instance and with every storm. No ONE knows everything and the best way to sail all the time, if they think they do they are really asking for trouble when attempting to sail in such conditions. Thankfully most the real experienced sailors acknowledge this and will agree on that, even if they disagree on the best tactics to use. Lines don't break, Pfft. That says it all mate.

Well said Chris. I cannot believe the hate horrible things said on here. I'm guessing that 99% of the people on here with negative comments can't be convinced to go out and collect their own mail from the post office box without a police escort, much less sail around the world solo pathetic

@kenetted can respect that view and agree with much of it .... except the brave part. Bravery is simply facing your fears, so long as she does not let this stop her sailing and racing, than she will be brave.
@kevinfisher1345
@kevinfisher1345 5 жыл бұрын
@kenetted You have much different definition of bravery than I do. Which is fine, but not sure I am understanding yours. So let me run a scenario by you. Consequences and making choices. It is only logical to hopefully NOT put yourself into situations that are risky if possible so as to avoid severe consequences. However IF you do, should be willing to face those possible consequences. In this regard I can see how you do not go along with people putting themself in this current situation, as it is a riskier place to sail. But lets say driving an auto vehicle, this is a somewhat risky endeavor as is shown by stats with quite few accidents. Yet one needs to go places, get to work etc. So lets say you choose to take that risk and drive. End up in an accident, like say some rodent ran across the street and flipped the car and results in you being pinned inside the car. Unable to get out yourself. So are you saying it is only brave for that person to decline help and save yourself or die? Yes I get how rescuers could be considered brave, and yes I get IF you choose not to decline being rescued, that is neither being brave nor not being brave. But the only way per you one can be brave in that situation is to what? Decline assistance and save yourself?

And I know in at least one occasion, I would have had a busted up face if I wasn't wearing one. Besdes, you can put really cool stickers or sponsors on them. Well let me see if I can educate you, Clay: Organizers and participants set off on an around the world sail without "modern" electronics which would immeasurably allow them to improve the safety of the event. The failure to include weather radar and satellite weather; electronic navigation, autopilots and GPS all set them up for failure and endanger the lives of 10's if not 100's of rescuers who have to go drag their asses out of the water when they shockingly get into trouble. Countries like India and others who have the worlds worst poverty are forced to expend valuable resources to rescue these selfish people rather than spend the money to feed their poor. Because all of these boats have corporate sponsors - all could have afforded the safety equipment which could have avoided most of these problems they created of their own accord. I don't give a shit if someone on their own wants to sail the world with the equipment of Christopher Columbus, but don't expect and endanger the lives of other to rescue your ass when you "hurt your back." So, Clay, who got egg on their face, moron.

@@chiefcliff For someone doing educating, you seem to have left out many things. Such as sailors navigated without modern electronics for hundreds of years (and even in those waters). 2) Modern electronics would not have prevented this accident. 3) They all WERE equipped with modern safety equipment, much more so than the first race decades ago this is emulating. 4) NO country was forced to rescue, in the case of India, they INSISTED they were crucially involved in rescueing their fellow military person. 5) All of the participants in the rade did NOT have corporate sponsors. 6) ALL of the safety equipment was supplied by race organizers ... think that was part of the entrant fee's costs. 7) They sailed with equipment of early 1900's ... not Christopher Columbus. More importantly they sailed with BETTER safety equipment than original race as already stated. So would you like to open yourself to having more egg thrown on your face?

What would you have rescue personal do if not rescue people? It's their job. I'm sure most of them like doing their job and enjoy helping people. No one is putting a gun to their heads. They chose to do that type of work for a living. They have safety procedures that they follow, if it's to dangerous they won't do it. I imagine they are more at risk of dying on their way to work than at work.
