Visit of a typical GGR boat. Here is Kevin Farebrother one.
Kevin Farebrother bought Don McIntyre’s Tradewind 35 class yacht Silver Heels in 2016. He has renamed her Sagarmatha, which is Nepalese for Mount Everest. He sailed her the 6,000 mile distance from Sydney around the top of Australia to Perth where he prepared the yacht for the Race during 2017. Sagarmatha joined Mark Sinclair’s rival Lello 34 Coconut on the same ship bound for London. Kevin planned to base himself in Les Sables d’Olnne to make final preparations.
Name Sagarmatha
Type Tradewind 35 Masthead sloop
Designer John Rock
Builder Tradewind Yachts (NL)
LOA 35.01ft / 10.67m
LWL 25.82ft / 7.87m
Beam 10.50ft / 3.20m
Draft 5.51ft / 1.68m
Displacement 19442 lbs / 8819 kgs
Sail area 725sq. ft / 67.35sq. m

Usually the buyer payes deposit in price agree , then sail and survey if the boat fails survey or doesn’t come up to the buyers expectations under sail the deposit is refunded and the buyer goes looking for another boat , only paying for a survey in wich he owns

Super informative Don, as usual! Every time I watch one of these boat tours, I learn how much I don't know about fitting out an ocean voyaging yacht! I'm very much into setting even a regular cruising boat up as though it might have to sail the Southern Ocean. Something instilled in me from my good friend that survived the Queens Birthday Storm. Interesting, as her death was just the other day. I always learn so much watching you discuss the fit out of the GGR boats. Your walk through of Ian Herbert-Jones' boat was seriously enlightening. Gees he did a great job! The Britts really get it! I wanted to comment on the wheel steering in this boat. The rack and pinion is such a great system, we had it on our last boat, a Contest 31, the Uus Van Essen design. Basically bullet proof. Though we did opt to go back to a tiller on our current Crealock 37. Still no comparison to this Tradewind 35. I love the flush deck/tiny coach roof. So much safer without the extra step off a coach roof the run of the foredeck. we also went with the Origo alcohol stove. Nice to see Jane not behind her camera. Thanks for the tour!

Beautiful boat indeed. Now I have a stupid question too haha. Since SSB radios are allowed aboard for GGR... if I am an amateur radio operator and let's say I have a vintage radio.. would it be allowed ? Basically is just another SSB radio or well... CW also, except that for other bands 😁. This way if I would participate in the race... I could keep busy now and then.

Gorgeous boat! I’ve a question regarding the milk, as it’s an issue I’ve been having, cruising my trapper 500 fulltime. In a one litre container, once opened does Kevin just commit to finishing the litre within the day? Bloody scrambled eggs, milky teas and big ol glass of milk over dinner? I found awesome 250ml UHT milks in Italy. How’s he drink it before it goes bad?

@PierreGuilbert 4 жыл бұрын
UHT milk that has been continuously refrigerated will keep for about 7 to 10 days after opening. Usually 2-to-3 days open outside, if it's below 20Celcius in my experience. You can smell it when it turns bad :)

I think you should allow buyer a sea-trial and survey and not keep the 10% deposit if something bad is discovered during sea-trial and survey.

I hope whoever bought it devised a way to keep those hatches in the cabin sole in place... I saw quite a few other basics missing in this video, it's no wonder so many boats dropped out if this was a prime example of the fleet.

the race follows 1968 technology, they aren't allowed iPhones, digital cameras and anything else electronic basically. They use film cameras and ice boxes and as for food, they would have mostly dry goods I would imagine :)

can someone with sailing experience tell me if this is a tad insane to compete in? basically whats the chances of a tidal wave/ storm just sinking the yacht 1,000 miles off the coast? Idk maybe its very possible to complete safely with a lot of experience. Tthis seems like something id like to do.

18 people started, 8 are left. Some left for personal reasons but some were caught in huge storms and suffered damages to their vessels as a result. The race rules require entrants to have quite a lot of experience sailing, as well as plenty of experience sailing alone.

Tyler Mikos My brother and I used to sail a Balboa 20 in the Sea of Cortez in the 80's and early 90's in our teens and early 20's with only a compass and a cheap fishfinder with sounder glued to the hull, and a chart. No GPS back then, and no marine radio installed. We weathered lots of big storms in that thing, far from assistance. Waves taller than the mast at times. Nowadays people can't even imagine driving an hr away without a cell ph, and letting someone know they are going. This race brings back the independent adventurous completely self sufficient spirit that is so distant from humanity now. Looking back I think we were so young and dumb then. But it was normal back then. We hold on so damn tight now.

Don't worry about tidal waves cause you take a book called tidal wave tables that tell you how to dodge them and if you hug the coast of Antarctica you never lose sight of land !!
