I want to thank you. I'm nonmilitary, 45 year old son of country folk. I could kill deer all day long but 300 yards out I was lucky to hit a torso size target. After humbling myself and watching your sniper 101 series this old dog has now been able to hit 8inch groups at 600. While everyone can laugh this is a huge improvement for me personally and I'm keeping at it. Keep up the great work!

Good video ,with cartridge design a good balanced shape is essential, that's why cases like 30-06,223,222 and 50bmg are so successful, they are about at there limit before overbore becomes apparent and the law of diminishing returns comes into play .That is why the weatherby rounds never caught on ,ie burning masses of powder for a little gain in velocity and short barrel life.

Great video bud. Lots of good info. Only the biggest culprits for throat erosion are pressure and friction. But mostly pressure. The numbers will be different for each cartridge and each load. And sustained fire of course. But the heat from the powder itself will probably only contribute to 5% of the erosion. Maybe even less. It’s good info to know. That’s why barrels burn out faster at the throat. That is where the pressure spikes the highest. As the bullet travels down the barrel, the pressure drops rapidly. Making the muzzle end last much longer.

Will be in the market for a scope to dive in long range shooting on a budget. On a Remington 700 .243. This format is great. Keep it up.

Thanks so much for this, man! This is the pithiest and most helpful discussion on the subject I've ever heard, and you've clarified something for me. I'd wanted my next LR rifle to be chambered in .243 Win because of its relatively high BC, and it also happens to be readily available and inexpensive where I live (VT). Other cartridges with better BCs tend to be more expensive here and are harder to find. But I've heard some guys say that barrel life is really short for a .243, like

Comparing the 243win with the 6mm Rem (formerly 244 Rem.)... Both cases have about the same powder capacity (the 6mmRem can hold a few more grains than the 243win.) and of course the same bore diameter, but general consensus is that the 6mmRem. barrel life is much longer than the 243's. The biggest difference between the 2 cartridge designs is the length of the neck. The 6mmRem's neck is much longer than the 243's and it's speculated that the longer neck helps to shield the throat from some of the torching.

One thing that helped stave off the throat erosion in the M2, M1919, and M60's was that the chamber and first few inches of barrel were actually a stellite (High quality, aircraft / suppressor application super alloy) liner which was extremely wear and heat resistant.

Nice Video! Thanks for the info. I can only imagine the throat erosion in something like a 7mm Allen Mag. There isn't a whole lot out there about it. Allen Precision sells 200 grain pills for it. Alco bullets makes a 208 grain .284 projectile with a claimed G1 B.C. of .945!! It's A .338 Lapua case necked down to a .284 and fire formed. They use the Lapua case for it's durability. You can push them out to about 3300 3350 fps with a 30" or 32" barrel with a 1: 8 or 1:7.5. According to my trusty ballistics calculator, a 208 grain bullet at 3300fps is supersonic beyond 2800 yards and retains 630 ft/lbs of energy!! That's a ballistic monster. Just for comparison a .408 Chey Tak with a 419 grain .940 B.C. at 2900 fps is supersonic to about 2400 yards and 1229 ft/lbs of energy. I'm kinda surprised that here in the us we haven't Experimented more with the 7mm as a sniper platform. It's certainly lighter at 15 lbs for the 7mm Allen mag than the heavier calibers, .338 Lapua, 408 Chey Tac, 416 barrett, and .50 cal BMG.

I didn't see the 22-250 on there. I'm guessing it's a barrel burner, by its crazy proportions. I bet even something like the .22 TCM is a pretty HOT shooter. Or the .357 SIG even.... This video made a lot of sense, bro. I enjoyed.

Just wanted to mention for those that don't nerd out on this stuff, the older cartridges such as 30-06, 30-40 Krag, 54R, 45-70, were designed when the available powders had a much slower burn rate, so they had to put more powder in the cases, so the cases were bigger than what you would need to use today for the same performance. The 308, for example, was based on the 30-06, but 50 or 60 years later the powders had gotten better, so it could be a half inch shorter with slightly better performance. Shorter case meant shorter rifle meant lighter gun meant a soldier can carry more ammo.

I got 1 1/2" groups at 200 yards with my 6.8 SPC II.

The way i see it, the flatter shooting the caliber, the higher the chances for throat erosion at sustained fire. Because you pointed out all the ones with higher velocities. Basically, 3000 fps and faster could burn out a barrel pretty quick. Depending on how you use it of course.

I own rifles in many of the calibers shown here, and one that's even more notorious for 'barrel burning,' the 257 Weatherby. I can only dream of having the time, money and location to worry about 'shooting out' any of my barrels.

I have a 257 Weatherby and after 3-4 rounds I can fry an egg on it. While it is extremely flat shooting, I wish I would have gone with standard cartridge like the rest of my rifles.

Nothing regarding powder burn rate impacting throat erosion or did I miss that part?

Ya I hunt with a 270 wsm, and even though I love the rifle. I remember sighting it in in 35C temps. After 2 shots, I had to let it sit for 5 to 10 minutes to cool it off. Ya, I know the 2 shot zero technique. But I was alone, and I was switching from using moa scope to a mil scope for the first time, and I'll use the excuse "heat stroke". But I dialed 1 mil for every inch I had to move the scope. lol Oh what a chit show that was. Went from starting off being 3" low 2" left to missing the target! Thought the scope was broke, etc. Until my brain came back on line and realized that 3 mils at 100 yards is actually just over 10 inches of travel instead of 3 inches! Oh that was a miserable day at the range. Hot AF, and took me 2 hours to zero the rifle. And half that time was just waiting for it to cool. All's good though now, especially when that Tikka decided to shoot 150g fusions into cloverleafs from the bench. Cheap ammo and plenty good enough bullet for deer.

I was kinda wondering about this today blasting out 168gr Amaxs out of my 300 Win Sendero to fire form new brass to neck size it. I've heard that 1200 or so rounds can get your accuracy below the roughly 0.7MOA I'm getting now.

What about powder choice? I have a 6.5x55 Swede and I have seen loading data using 140 grain bullets and a crapload of magnum powder. I considered giving it a try, because I have some Accurate 8700 hanging around, but this makes me think twice. Anybody out there tried a similar load and what were your results?

My .257 Weatherby barrel lasted 400 rounds. Its not a ground hog caliber, lesson learned. But a 90 grain Blitzking @ 3900fps made things disappear!

Would I be fine using a Winchester hunting rifle in .243 for Persian shooting?

what are your thoughts Trex on the 6.5 Grendel for a long range round, sustainable fire and a semi-auto platform?

Would the .243 Winchester take the same bullets as 6.5mm? For 2017, I would like to build an AR-10/LR308 rifle. Obviously for logistics, I would do a 7.62 NATO upper. But I would also like to do 6.5mm. There is 6.5 Creedmoor. However, I would expect that .243 Win ammo would be more available and cheaper. If I can get a barrel, barrel extension, and bolt face in .243 Win for an AR-10 platform, then it seems I would be better off cost wise for ammo. For use it would be applied to NRA Silhouette. For precision shooting, it would go to 500 meters. That is the longest firing range I have access to. It would also be nice to share magazines with 7.62 NATO and 6.5mm. Extra nice would be not requiring a gun smith to do a custom barrel for me thanks to ITAR rules.

the rule of thumb is - any magnumization is not good for barrel life. Hence the 338 Norma Mag may be awesome for ballistic performance but as a basis for a machinegun - so-so.

Don't forget, precision bolt guns are just bare cut steel bores. Most semi-automatics and machineguns have chrome lined barrels. Bare steel wears down way faster than chrome lined barrels, but bare steel is more accurate than chrome lined. Sometimes I wonder if it's possible to chrome line just the throat and maybe the chamber but leave the rest of the bore as bare steel. Maybe that'll help these barrel burning cartridges last longer in precision bolt action rifles.

300 weatherby, RUMs, 30-378 wtby, 7mm-300=barrels worst enemy. I have a buddy who picked up a 1960 something 300 wtby for 250 bucks, it put a bullet completely sideways through a board at 100 yards :D
