Sequential M1 Increases for Starting Cables Mid Fabric

This is a demonstration of how to work two M1 increases side by side in the same bar. This is often used when creating cables mid fabric in a reverse Stockinette background.

These videos are so helpful because I can always refer back to them when I forget how to do something. I have finally started on the last panel of the cable pillow tutorial and always like to refresh my memory before starting those increases. :) Also, I am adding them to my ravelry project page for quick reference in the future.

Hi Suzanne, this is a great video. I have been trying to work out how to do this with just a two stitch cable not four. The instructions in the pattern say - Left increase, Using left needle tip, lift the purl loop (behind the work) from two rows below the stitch just knitted. It will be the first loop under your working yarn on back of work. Knit the loop. Right increase, Using right needle tip, lift purl loop from previous row from under and behind next stitch. Knit the loop. I am confused as to whether to knit into the front or back of these lifted loops. The author of the pattern does not specify. I am ofay with normal M1L and M1R where if you lift from the back you knit into the from and vice versa. Any ideas? With this right increase, if you are picking up the loop with the right needle tip, how do you knit it? Your thoughts and help will be greatly appreciated Jacquie

This is a great question. If your are starting your cables on a reverse stockinette background (purl loops in front) pick up from the front. If you are starting your cables from a stockinette background, pick up from the back. Hope this helps.

As a tight knitter I find there isn't enough slack to allow sequential make ones. I put a yarnover in the row below in the position of the first M1 for each set of increases so that I have some slack to carry along the 4 increases. I do this of toe up socks as well, adding a YO to the first of each side in the row below.

This particular set of increases is made to create a fabric that stands up above the rest of the fabric as a cable would. Being tight is the key to its success. If there is any slack in the bar before the increases, the fabric will lay flat and the cable start will not be very successful. Just give it a try and see what you think. Creating cables from a flat fabric is very interesting to the eye. happy knitting.

Have you tried using sharp points on your needles? I like Hiya Hiya sharps or Chiagoo Lace needles. Also, I have a really good video on even tension you can find it here. It may help you, I don't know, but it is worth a try. - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hdWBh5h3mdLRepc.html
