THE ST. JOHNS RIVER LEAVES BEHIND NICE MUD, SALT AND POSSIBLE PROBLEMS IN THE LONG HAUL.
IF YOU FISH THE ST. JOHNS RIVER AND DO ZERO PREVENTATIVE MAINTENANCE, I CAN JUST IMAGINE WHAT YOUR OUTBOARD LOOKS LIKE INSIDE, LET ALONE EVERYTHING THAT DIRT WATER ALSO EFFECTS. example: fuel cooler, water pump base corrosion, over-heating, water passages clogged, the list goes on.

The first time I watched your channel was about Ugly Stik rods..which I have used for years.My boys used and abused these over many years of fishing..and they held up never broke one maybe replaced a guide once in a blue moon..I also have the and still use the original Shimanos from Japan. Maintenance is the key to longevity in salt water got that from my Dad back in the day living in Norfolk,Va and boat,pier and surf fishing. Those old Tr100 and 200s, charter specials, TLDs are still in use also..thanks for all the tips I have copied and passed on a lot of your information. Keep it up Dave.

I love the maintenance videos. Lived in jax all my life on the westside and always took my boat to the mechanic for a 1000hr service for 1000 bucks. That was before youtube. Now i can watch a few videos like this and tackle about anything. Thanks

1000 HR SERVICE???? way, way too much shits building up in your motor! in between. LOOK what was in mine in just 3-4 months and what my interior anodes looked like in that same time frame. AND THAT WAS WITH FRESHWATER BARREL FLUSHING EVERY DAY. You need to see the video links in this videos description (on a non-pocket computer) that river is a S-hole!

I'm editing one last, Outboard ''in depth'' video right now about ''as I said here'' swapping the fuel cooler and checking it. Its real simple, if you run in very salty, dirt water, DO NOT USE the stupid flush ports! Use the muffs, or run to temp in a barrel.

My Suzuki dealer said not to use the muffs so I went out and bought a new muffs that have water feeding into both sides, it stands to reason the the motor was designed to intake water at the lower unit so the flushing should be the same... Great info Capt Dave! I bet a lot of people are looking to do anodes right now! LoL, I don’t run the river with my big boat but me and my cousin use my little Mako 1801 in the river a lot, it has a Zuke 115, an 06 model and it has the anodes too. You spoke some of the truest words anyone can hear....EVERYONE should have a service manual, owners manuals rarely have the critical maintenance info that service manuals do. thats only 1/2 of it....mines a 06, and I have several videos about that river clogging up my fuel cooler, you have one too. NEVER ever use that flush port on the motor and think your okay. I did for years and paid the price. NOW, anode check clean or replace, always run in a barrel, and also run rydlyme thu motor to washout all the M-U-D in the cooling system (water jacket) as you see here.

Great Video Capt Dave, it almost always boils down to pay now or pay later. Only thing with an outboard is if you pay later your going to pay BIG! Too many people don't realize the warranty on a newer outboard does NOT cover corrosion !

yep! boats are a breeze, outboards in saltwater are a bitch, no matter what the color or name. This will be my last L-O-N-G maintenance video. Because, most people don't have the time or ''need to know'' all this. They just learn, ''whip out the credit card'', then the wife bitches, and in 3-5 years, the boats gone, and they move on to.....''hopefully charter fishing with me!...''Cuz, I love it when they wip out the credit card!''

Great information capt. Dave I flush after every use with salt terminator. When I replaced my anodes. I couldn’t believe how much crap was in my motor.

What do you think about visiting clean fresh water lakes for a day occasionally ?? Seems like the reved up running and higher flow and volume would be great. I am a pleasure boater out of Bradenton area but like to travel with the boat anyway on occasion.

Thats not a replacement for flushing with clean water, motor running up to operating temp. In a barrel. And do not use those flushing ports!

So good video Capt Dave. I’ve watched your videos several times and I have a question. If you submerge you’re lower unit in that 70gal tank to flush your motor, aren’t you just recycling the St. John’s river sludge through the motor? F you had those ears custom made you talked about wouldn’t all the sludge be rinsed out onto the ground as fresh water from the hose would nay be running through the motor? Just a thought!

IN PINNED COMMENT I MADE ABOVE my main man Orowock told me, if you had the t-stats out it would have beenbetter, never thought about it. I'm ALWAYS under the gun so I had to get it done before my next charter.....plus I pulled my fuel cooler. Editing that right now!

With lower unit off push hose directly on pickup tube and plug your pisser,I had great results.check water flow at thermostat. Love Rydlyme

Put the bolt in and use a slide hammer to pull the anode and cover.

I flushed my zuke 140 with zepp calcium lime and rust remover. It got about 2 single handfuls of grit out of it.

just got back my boat from the dealer. Replaced entire lower unit. Said it has water inside, but when they tested then didn't find a leak. Since it was still under warranty they replaced the whole thing. They didn't touch any anodes though, even though i told them

you just got lucky....you had leaking seals! But never heard of merc giving lower units away....sounds fishy to me, or not the whole story. You may have to actually turn a wrench, and learn more about maintenance. FRESHWATER anodes get nasty too, and eaten away. It's a electrically charged thing in water. Usually anodes for freshwater are magnesium, I believe.

let's hope i don't have to do that. Mercury sells extended full warranty for 5 years for 1000. You can ONLY buy this warranty WHILE your engine is still in the original warranty (this way they know u don't have 'preexisting conditions' when u are buying the warranty). So the lower unit wasn't completely free, i did pay 1000 for the warranty, but i still have 3.5 years left and im sure i will use the warranty one more time. I wish i could buy another 10 years for 2000$ and just not worry about anything : )

@@ifishcatfish I had years ago a motor extended warrenty on a Evinrude 200 2-stroker...blew it up twice, because of lack of lubrication. ZERO fault of mine, and that company spent 7k TWICE paying my mechanic to rebuild it. Plus blew a Yamaha 200 2-stroker also, and they paid. So yeah, great for you, but I'd still be out of work! SOOOOOO either way I LOOSE! Thats why I ''have too' make sure maintenance and PREVENTATIVE THINGS ARE DONE.

I wonder if new Evinrudes have these anodes? My old 1990 Johnson 175gt is still running ok. I am torn between a Suzuki DF, or a used G2 175. I usually pull the boat out when not in use, and flush for a few minutes.

really, ya want a used motor where the company went out of business? I'd steer so far away from them, no matter what they say. All modern outboards seem to have smartened up and have internal anodes. It's all about how EZ they are to inspect and change. I BELIEVE SUZUKI IS THE WINNER.

AFTER WATCHING YOUR VIDEO LAST YEAR I DECIDED I WANTED TO FLUSH ALL 4 OF MY BOATS (THEY ALL SEE THE ST JOHNS RIVER VERY FREQUENTLY) AND FOUND MY THERMOSTATS AND ANODES COVERED IN SALT, MUD, AND CORROSION. AFTER THE RYDLYME FLUSH I COULD TELL A HELL OF A DIFFERENCE AND WILL BE RYDLYME FLUSHING MY OUTBOARD EVERY 6 MONTHS

Well I would never think that I know weekenders that fish way more than I do They have real jobs that pay them every week. these days I barely even go on weekends anymore thanks to joke Biden in his band of scumbags. well I'll tell you what the mechanic that I use said, there's two things he loves... ethanol and the St Johns River . keeps him busy.

Well I'm very very far from there I'm in Jacksonville I don't know nothing about that the river really is just thin and swampy going south and it's all fresh water. Unlike here where there's incessant dredging and ungodly current

@@CaptDavesSportfishing I was there to check things out and noticed a lot of air boats and some john boats. The water is brown tannin. But, I figure it can't be any worse on an engine than the Indian and Banana Rivers with brackish waters.

@@oldhardrock2542 yes tannin Galore running to the swamps heading to Jacksonville and then becoming extremely salty stirred up from incessant dredging and that's the reason why I have to pay attention to my outboard I only wish I had just the tannin to worry about. That's the reason I love aluminum boats fiberglass boats get the st. Johns River camouflage on the bottom in the pores of your fiberglass AKA brown stain

its recommended to remove the thermostat for the rydlyme to circulate better and through the cooling system. that's why you don't get anything through the anodes hole because the thermostat is cold and closed. good luck capt.

just needed to get something done, since my lower unit was being re-sealed, doesn't matter I got it all cleaned real good (its funny, everyones a expert) they, Rydlyme thinks everyones doing this on a inboard engine. this video and my others about maintenance don't get any views, 90% of outboard owners don't do shit, except drop it off at a $100 a hr. shop. So, I won't be doing videos on this type of maintenance any longer. Too much time invested, editing etc. for nothing.

I believe the bolt is an M12 fine thread for the Suzuki anodes, for the anode removal part. I prefer the Yamaha anode setup, because the anode to plate bolt comes through from the outside-in, so it isn't exposed to the corrosion on the bolt head inside the motor, like the Suzuki design. Thanks for the fuel cooler laugh....next time someone asks why you installed the fuel cooler, you tell them it's what you do with the spare cans of PBR after a trip. PBR FUEL COOLERS STOPS THE VAPOR LOCK! HAHAHA! Here's a thought, why not use the RidLyme before changing the anodes? Wouldn't it make it easier to remove them after because of the lack of scale? Have you tried this?

everything is EZ on the zuki, except getting that fuel cooler out. And now run after every trip in my barrel, so no more issues. The anodes are never that stuck if checked every 100 hrs like I do now, as per the service manual. Not wealthy enough to buy yamahas. Same 18k zuki, was 28k in gold plated yamaha! Since repowered, all this shit is O-L-D!

You'd need about $350 worth!! 50/50 solution I believe. Don't do it that way, pump it and recycle for a few hours, if you have a salt/mud/scale high temp, issue. Its not a ''frequent maintenance'' thing. Its a fix. Maintenance is running / flushing in a tub after every trip (as I do with my new Suzuki 2020) and let the water get warm. Salt and grime gets washed away with warm water easily. As you inspect your Anodes, every 100 hrs, you'll see the water jacket inside with a flash light. My Engine is spotless inside, cause I flush immediately while motor is still warm after every single trip.....Because I run in Salty MUD water.

Please i have the new model Suzuki 30 hp four stroke and when i start in house with mineral water with ear after 5 munite alarm temperature i stopped fast the engine next day i go at mihanik. We put at computer ww start the engine and the temperature go at 96 and stop there after we change thermostat for 60c.And we change new impeller in water pump.We start the engine again and the temperature go at 86 and when you put forward water go litle fast and temperature fast go down at 63.when you put neutral 86 it is normal mu mihanik they don't know esaclu how temperature must have that engine but alarm now no ring!!!

a new 30hp shouldn't need any new parts. are you sure you had the flushing muff of it correctly???? Check your owners manual. You ''may'' be able to start and idle it using the internal flush port, instead. On my 15 mercury I can, as long as its just in idle. read your owners manual. Your alarm went off from not enough water pressure or improper use of flushing muffs.

@@CaptDavesSportfishing yes i put the leg of engine all the water and with no pressure gas motor go at 86c when i put gas 63c i dont have manuals because i Buy second hand and they lose the other men before i go at suzuki yestarday and at computer engine have 350 hours but the mihanik they dont know if engine is ok to work at 86c other mihaniks i speak they tell me is not normally
