About the test:
A little while back we tested the manual version of the Suzuki Celerio with a 5-speed 'box. But they also have an automated gearbox, and it's a special one too. Because it is not a convential automatic but what Suzuki calls: 'Auto Gear Shift'. A small unit on top of the regular manual gearbox takes over control of the gears and clutch. Suzuki says that it is fun-to-drive, more economical than a regular automatic and is relatively cheap to buy.
To add to that the car is lightweight, a fraction bigger than the car it succeeds, namely the Alto and that creates more interior space which is practical. Also, the small engine has enough power (68 hp) and torque (90 Nm) from its 998-cc 3-cylinder engine to move it around quickly. We take a more in-depth look into how the system works in reality.

A fair review. I've bought three of these cars now. Although in the past, I have always preferred manual gearboxes, I have grown to love the AGS semi-automatic box on the Celerio. There aren't that many automatics out there that can do 70 mpg!

Peter Growcott any problems till now with AGS? I have heard the clutch needs replacement and the ride is jerky

Best to switch to manual mode. Its fairly easy and fun considering there is no clutch

Wow look at the revs you have to do just to accelerate, reminscent of my friend's old honda engine 10 years ago, different being honda was designed as a high revving engine and it was like driving a race car, doubt this engine is designed for such high revs, though it is theoretically far superior in fuel economy, it prolly guzzles to be able to hard accelerate like that.

I was stuck renting this car for a week. By far, in all my years on this planet, this was the worst car I've ever driven. Cheap, noisy, no power whatsoever (couldn't make it up most hills), poor manual transmission (the shifts were harsh) no amenities at all (manual windows, manual locks, no tilt steering wheel), and most of all, UGLY. It was a horrendous experience.

+Hopekeepr I really don't know, but I'm told by friends of mine who live in Central and South America that even the worst cars cost a fortune because it's so expensive for automakers to ship to remote, third world countries (which is where this car is sold). You'd never find this thing in the United States. Not a chance. By comparison though, I'm told a Honda in Brazil costs about the same money as an entry-level Cadillac in the US (they consider Honda as luxury), so my guess is it's probably expensive.

If you're talking about $7500 American dollars then I absolutely see why it's as low quality a car as I found it to be. The average price of a new car in the US is $33,560.
