Hello friends, thanks for tuning in! It has been quite some time since I have worked on the scrambler, but it is time to change that! Since i first got this bike running again almost 2 years ago, it has leaked a little bit of oil, and since then it has gotten worse! I have always kept the oil topped off before riding the bike, so don't worry keyboard warriors! Nonetheless, I am sick of this thing leaking oil! And, I kinda want to sell it. I wanted to get the whole job done in one video, but I ran into a problem with getting the bottom cylinder gasket removed, it is baked on there good. If you have any tips for getting baked on old gaskets off, please put them in the comments below!

I had a 78 GS 850 when I was 18 years old, it was a ten year old bike then. Lots of great memories on that bike, and all these cafe racer/scrambler mods I see on them really makes me miss it.

I just finished my first engine build on my '80 CB750K this spring. It was intimidating to start but when keeping everything organized and doing it by the book everything went well. I had the same problem as you, oil leaking from the gaskets and I even got a blown hole in the cylinder gasket. I took the engine out of the frame, removed the head and the cylinder, and noticed my pistons were all carboned up. I decided to do a full rebuild. New pistons and piston rings, removed all the valves, changed 3 of the valves and grinded and lapped all 16 of them and did the valve leak test, new cam chains and all new gaskets. After rebuilding I cleaned the carbs in a UV cleaner, all new jets and finally synchronization. Now the bike is like new and runs amazing. I think I got lucky on the gaskets because mine weren't as stuck on the cylinder as yours. Still, I did have some bits of the gasket stuck on after removing the bigger pieces, and I did use a sharp, flat blade while spraying WD40 on the gasket to keep it wet. Then just carefully with a steady hand removing the stuck bits. But that was the last resort, before that I used many edged, plastic tools. Hopefully you manage to remove yours, best of luck and I enjoy your videos!

Always having a go, that's gold. Hanging for part two as the head gasket on my 1979 Honda XR80 is baked on good (cylinder currently getting a re-bore). I think gasket remover and a very careful metal blade are the go as nothing is working to well so far.

I have used that citrus based paint remover (I think you tried it to remove paint on your TS185) on gaskets and had good results but you have to let it sit for days and keep it from drying up by adding a little every now and then. I really enjoy your work.

The Suzuki recommended method for removing the cams on a GS is to grip them in place using large locking type vice grips (called mole grips in the UK) before removing the bearing caps. The Clymer should mention that, the Haynes workshop manual certainly does. Good job on the build, I've not long done the head gaskets on my GS as some asshat rebuilt it using exhaust paste!

If it's leaking a bunch of oil just sitting it's not just coming from the head. The oil all sits in the bottom of the engine and can't possibly leak from above that level when it's not running. Oil leaks can blow all over the place when riding. Next tme clean the engine really well and let it sit still running. This way you can see where the leaks actually coming from. It's important to properly diagnose issues before starting repairs. This will save you a lot of unnecessary work over time.

Bristle disc is the way to go on that. My only concern about this is the fact that you aren't fixing the actual problem. 3 out of 4 pistons are dry and look healthy but that forth one is completely oil soaked. Definitely getting some oil into the combustion chamber and burning it/leaking out of the HG. Either the piston or rings are damaged/worn or possibly a valve stem seal is bad? What your doing is just a band aid. it may fix your leak onto the ground for some time but more then likely its burning oil and will leak again.
