A job of epic mechanical endurance.
Back in the garage once more, our intrepid amateur mechanics tackle the underside of Ciaran's Jimny, finding more rust than they can shake a stick at. Needless to say, this job took way longer than planned.

Thanks lads, this video was a great help. My wife's 2000 jimny (George) had leaked from the seal for a while but the crunch came when the wheel ended up splayed outwards as a result of the bottom kingpin bearing falling apart. Only problem I had was two of the bottom kingpin bolts sheared off and I had to drill them out. Keep up the good work

Thanks for this vid. Unfortunately I had to leave the old outer bearing races in place because I didn't have the necessary socket to drive them out. All the socket sets I have seen jump from 24m to 27mm. Where did you get a 1 inch socket from?
@MechitBetter
@MechitBetter 3 жыл бұрын
I think we just had it in our collection of things acquired over time. Alternatively if you can find a 25mm socket, it's about 0.4mm smaller, it should be close enough. Glad the video has been helpful though. At least you know what to expect if you decide to replace the races in the future 😏
@mikeshires7161
@mikeshires7161 3 жыл бұрын
@@MechitBetter I just got one from that "nice" S.American rainforest place :) Also, I tried cleaning up one of the races I removed to see how badly it was worn. It fell apart. My Jimny is a 63 plate with 64K; don't think its been anywhere near an off-road experience so I was surprised to see so much corrosion... which made me think about why its worth the effort of driving out the retainers. Since they also corrode, if you leave the old ones in and just replace the inner races, they'll likely produce a nice grinding paste for the new bearings...

@hamishcarrad9528
@hamishcarrad9528 Жыл бұрын
There can be a few reasons for a death wobble, one of the main causes on the early Jinny’s was the radius arm bushes were to soft they upgraded them at some point but I’m not sure when. Another good thing to check is that the rear wheels are tracking parallel to the front wheels and not offset. This is an old question so I hope you managed to fix the problem.

Damn nice video full of nice attitude. Working slow and with thought makes the trick. As a happy amateur I changed kingpin bearings once in my Jimny, and twice on friends. All in Sweden before I moved to Central America 10 years ago. I documented it (stills only) on my website at the time, Jimny.se. (BigJimny took over the site as I moved.) Note - I noticed you didn’t smooth/clean the surface for the rubber seal on the back. Was it a reason for that? Anyhow - Well done guys, very well done!

Great vid, entertaining and educational! Is the Jimny easy to perform work on as a DIY mechanic otherwise, in your experience?
@MechitBetter
@MechitBetter 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the positive vibes Tony. In my experience of tinkering on the Jimny, which isnt extensive by any stretch, i havent really had much of a problem. The ground clearance makes it easy to work on the underside and inspect things. There isnt a ton of plastic and extra tech in the engine bay to cause you much bother with access or other issues. The interior is basic but works. Im not saying its all going to be problem free but, much like anything, its just a matter of taking your time and finding the right info before you get stuck in... Or at least maybe when you get stuck. Its a great little machine. Just got to watch out for the rust... Are you thinking of getting one?
@Tony.B.
@Tony.B. 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the extensive answer! Yes, I'm gathering some info at least. I'm not a big fan of plastic covers making it a hassle to reach stuff and, as you've said, the extra height clearance seems like a huge bonus. They're not crazy expensive either, so if they're fairly straightforward to perform work on and parts are easy to source, I might just get one. They seem really fun too!
@MechitBetter
@MechitBetter 5 жыл бұрын
If you plan to do some off-road or greenlaning or live in a more rural area, they are fantastic. If you mainly do town and motorways then its not the best choice as the fuel economy and performance isnt its strong suit. Its perfectly capable but not what it was made for. Its comfortable to drive and has a small turning circle. Visibility is good as there's big windows all the way round. The downside is that its not the safest in terms of crash test stuff but then its best not to have a crash in the 1st place 🙄 There are plenty out there for little money but like i say, you need to be very careful and inspect as much as possible as rust CAN be a big problem. Find a solid body and you're laughin'

@MechitBetter
@MechitBetter 5 жыл бұрын
Kevan Simmons just checked my metric sockets and there’s no equivalent that’s exactly the same. The 27mm socket has a 36mm OD, and the 24mm socket has about a 32mm OD - so it might be possible to use on of those but I’m not sure. The sockets I have are part of a Halfords set.

Class video guys. I have just got a 2002 jimny and it has the dreaded death wobble at 45-55 mph. No sign of seepage from the swivel joints and no movement in either wheel when jacked up. So i plan on changing the brake pads and discs, i think they are warped. While doing that should i do all the kingpin bearings too or would you just see how it drives after the discs are done? If the wobble is still there then the kingpins will have to be done with removal of the discs again. So I'm not sure what to do. What do you think guys? Love the channel btw!
@MechitBetter
@MechitBetter 5 жыл бұрын
I’ll let Ciarán answer that one fully, but have you considered that the wheels might need balancing? A wobble across a narrow speed range is often just an imbalanced wheel. Much simpler to fix than kingpins, so might be worth looking at first - JOHN
@tonwhelan
@tonwhelan 5 жыл бұрын
@@MechitBetter Thanks John. First thing I did was have the wheels balanced and it improved drastically, but still a slight wobble. Reason I think the discs are warped is when jacked up and rotating the wheels they get stiff at certain points and i can hear them rubbing.
@MechitBetter
@MechitBetter 5 жыл бұрын
Fair enough. That sounds fairly conclusive. I suppose it’s easy enough to whip the wheel off and see if the disc is warped. We tested that very thing in our ‘Fiat Panda Rear Discs and Pads’ video. At about the 7m 35s point you can see where the disc is warped and how we confirmed it. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bcx0rMykxreqonk.html My personal thought is that doing the discs and pads is significantly easier than doing the kingpins. If it were me then I’d risk doing just those first, and I’d take them off again to do the kingpins later if I needed to. If you’ve not got any wobble when it’s lifted, and no seepage, then I’d take the risk. Let’s see what Ciàran thinks - JOHN
@MechitBetter
@MechitBetter 5 жыл бұрын
Well... Im not sure theres much i can add. You seem to have covered much of the logical process. Although it might save a bit of time once you already have the wheel off etc to delve into kingpin territory, if the disc is the problem, you run the risk of extra effort and expense before eliminating that possibility 1st. Also, if its all stripped apart down to kingpins, you wont be able to test it simply changing disc + pads has resolved the problem. Eliminate the easiest stuff before digging deeper - CIARAN
@tonwhelan
@tonwhelan 5 жыл бұрын
@@MechitBetter Thanks guys I'll go with just the discs and pads first, makes sense to eliminate each possible cause. 👍

Must I do this if my car have vibrations runing up to 40mph?
@MechitBetter
@MechitBetter 3 жыл бұрын
It is a common issue for the Jimny. However you should try a couple other things first: Check tyre pressure is correct Check front wheels have been balanced Check the alignment of the wheels Some garages may check these things for free or at a small cost which it may well save you some money and time. It could be a combination of these things but if all of that is fine then yes, you may need to get the kingpins etc done. Hope that helps
@tonimews4313
@tonimews4313 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Guy's, That was a good insight to a nice job, But the hub seal you replaced will not last long, because the circle half rubber seal is going to wear out very quickly due to swivel being very rusty. This should have been rubbed off with fine emery cloth and any deep rust pits filled so the rubber seal can wipe clear.

I know your comment is real old, but I have to reply to note for anyone watching that the jimny has a slider sleeve (the actual bearing surface) and a long bolt that goes through it - so actually the bolt they used is just a normal run of the mill bolt that isn’t too expensive to replace. Best bet is to have some replacements when working on the jimny anyway since they seem to rust so bad! Also I’ve never come across a Teflon coated slider pin, but I’ve only worked on cars and vans older than about 2014? Most are simply zinc plated and reliant on the red grease retained by the slider seals.
