At 70 yrs old I still take my RGV 250 out for a quick ride in the hills and it never fails to bring enormous satisfaction. But it's a prerequisite to have an addiction or built-in DNA for 2 strokes and preferably have lived through the golden era of 2 strokes. I've got a few bikes in my garage but the RGV is a keeper. When not ridden it sits prominently on display as a proud show piece.

I remember having a go on my brothers 350lc. I'd never ridden a two stroke before and was riding it through the village wondering what all the fuss was about as it felt flat and slow. I then hit the national speed limit wound it round to 8000 ish rpm and all hell broke loose! Scared.the shit out of me! First time I'd ever had a bike wheelie off the throttle! By the time I got back to his house I was grinning like an idiot and was totally hooked!

It's a real shame that because of emissions the 2 stroke motor had to die. Because believe me back in the day there was no 4 stroke of equal capacity that could keep up with a 2 stroke. The 2 strokes acceleration can only be described as ballistic in fact they didn't accelerate in the normal sense of the word but would "slingshot" you down the road. That is why you did not see 4 stroke machines winning the big races back then. Now at nearly 72 I was truly blessed to have lived through that era and owned most of Suzuki's twin and 3 cylinder machines. I can remember when I traded my last GT 750 for a new Kawasaki Z1000 (1978), after carefully running it in I was so disappointed at the Kawasaki's top speed, my kettle was a much faster machine. I also remember trying out a Yamaha RD350. What a hooligan machine that was as you couldn't keep the front wheel on the floor once again ballistic acceleration. Happy days.

Interesting as a nostalgia trip, but even back in the day, I'd have a GSXR750 over an RG500. I owned two strokes back then, dirt bikes and a GT550 Indy. They needed constant fettling and were fuel pigs. I briefly tried stingers on the Indy, but the racket got old in a hurry, so the stock pipes went back on. Caning it, the GT550 would get as low as 20mpg. You basically lived in fear that the centre cylinder would run hot and burn a piston, or the oiler would pack it in and you'd seize up at speed. I've got a KTM Duke now. Light, quick, plenty of power, monster brakes, easy on fuel, and so far reliable. No way I'd give that up for a ring-ding-ding. That's before even getting into the really high end stuff like the Paginales or M1000RRs etc

The prices now are absolutely crazy. Such an experience riding a two stroke, the sound and the smell is absolutely addictive. Learnt on various 2 and 4 strokes back in the 80's, my dad had a Honda dealership and bought a Stan Stephens race tuned rd400 which we went to pick up I was 17 and he let me ride it back with him following me in the car. Don't open it up and be careful he said, when we got back I had take it round the block to put it in the workshop. My 17 year old brain thought what's all the fuss about this thing feels dead so as soon as I got out of sight I opened it up and got nothing until the power band came in, front wheel headed skyward my legs flew off the pegs and a bit of wee came out. I just managed to get it back in one piece with my pride and confidence in bits, he greeted me with a smirk saying "goes well does it?" nothing more was said on the matter.....

Great story, I have a similar experience. Back around 1979'-80' I was selling one of my air-cooled RD350. It had spec II pipes, rear sets, clip ons and had a strong hard pulling port job that will lift the front end 1st through 3rd on power without any manipulation. I was a teenager and at the time only weighed 120 lbs. This guy came by to test ride my RD. He was a big guy around 5'-10" and about 220+ lbs. I told him I honestly felt that the RD would not be a good fit physically for him especially with rear sets and clip on bars he will be cramped. He insisted that he wanted a bike just to put around with in the city. So I fired it up and told him to be careful, this thing will come up. He replied "I have a kz900 with a big bore kit, cammed and carbed!" I said ok, just be careful. So he takes off and just guns it! The front end comes up hard, his right foot comes off the peg, he slams it back down. He looks back at me, I wave him to come back. Now he's bogging the RD in 3rd gear and pulls up to me. I immediately turned off the ignition and pulled the key. He said the bike was hard to ride because he was too big for it. Long story but i love telling it! 🤣🤣🤣

Back in 1985 my dad bought me a 1984 RG50 HB Colours when I was 15. That bike was traded in 1987 on a 1985 RG250. By 1988 the RG250 was traded on a 1985 RG500! Funny thing is my father knew nothing about bikes, other than my RG's looked good. This was my introduction into 2stroke nirvana. Back in early 90's lost my way a little and returned to 2stroke with a 1993 Kawasaki KR1S. I've owned several other 4stroke SuperBikes over the years and nothing comes close to my 2Strokes! Must add that I live in South Africa.

IN the countryside where I grew up, it was mainly motocross two strokes. (Belgium had a lot of crossers, world champions) and on sundays yould couldn't walk the fields without passing several (illegal) riders. Riding the Honda 350 dual sport on the dirt roads, at the age of 14... The sound and smell of motocross World Championship matches in our neighbourhood in the late 70ties, mixed with the smells of hot-dogs, fries and beer the duels between Roger De Coster on his Suzuki and Heikki Mikkola on the Huskie... memories

I remember these coming out in the 1980s saw a few out in the wild, quite a physically small bike, a proper racing bike for the street I sat on the later RGV250 and that was truly a pocket rocket in terms of size. Yamaha did their similar RD500, I owned the RD350LC ypvs bikini faring version and the earlier air cooled RD400e twin, which was an absolute wheelie machine due to it's long stroke engine and very short wheelbase, everytime I opened it up, the front wheel would lift up, overtaking on one wheel was an experience!! Eventually blew a hole in a piston and it instantly became an RD200 actually rode it home on one cylinder....had to rebuild the engine anyway so no further harm was done. Having had 2 strokes and 4 strokes I much prefer big capacity 4 strokes, biggest I owned was a CBX1000 6 cylinder beast.... But I started out on 2 strokes, a suzuki er50 was my first bike, so have a soft spot for them!! I remember a few KH triples blasting past me out of corners......😳😲

The brakes on them all were awful and you could induce tank slappers if you did not concentrate. I love the buzz and smell that you only get from a 2 stroke. Jeez, you used to be able to pick these up for buttons at the grey importers like West Coast in Southport. The prices you've mentioned must be because there's next to none still surviving. They were absolutely mental, like the Yam RD 350 YPVS, absolute widow-makers. Getting into the powerband was intoxicating. I used to ride a first model GSXR 750, the brakes and suspension were absolute bobbins, you'd have to plan every bend hundreds of yards in advance, God help you if you got it wrong! Top review mate!

You lucky sod, I’m envious 😃👍! My first bike was a ‘72 Suzuki T250 (note my thumbnail), from there to a ‘73 Suzuki 550 Indy. I miss the sound and “feel” of two strokes, and can even remember how the different brands of injector oil had distinctive smells. Thanks for taking us along for a bit of a “flashback” 😉. (Shame we don’t have “smell vision” 🤪!)

Love a stroker. 1998-2001 I had a road legal Aprilia RS250 Reggiani race rep', tuned to 92hp. That's 3hp less than a stock RG500.

Hi Chops, What a fantastic trip down memory lane 👍. I dreamt of having the old rgv250…way back when. Two strokes just evoke a thrill and passion that has a feeling like nothing else on two wheels. Yes, they’re rudimentary in comparison to the motorcycles of today but in their time they were cutting edge. I was looking forward to seeing this video when you announced that it was in the works and (as usual) you haven’t disappointed. 10/10 Chops. Cheers from Australia 🇦🇺

I got to ride one in the 80s. A friend bought one and he raced me on my 87 Hurricane 1000 and he almost beat me! We exchanged bikes for a ride. It was an EXCELLENT bike! Very light and easy to control, so much fun and the sound was awesome. They hear you coming!

Absolutely awesome chops, I’m so jealous lol. I’ve just completed a nut and bolt restoration on a Suzuki Gt 185 as it was my first road bike at 17 not in the same league as the RG but I love it as much I did at 17 and I’m 58 now, every rider should experience a two stroke. This is probably my favourite video.

@@ferrumignis the late 70,s early 80,s were a great era for bikes, after paying my test on the GT185 in 81 I brought a 1978 Kawasaki z900 and I still own it today.

I had a RG125 gamma in the skoal bandit livery at the age of 17 and 18, back in the 90s. very rare bike that used to turn heads. It was tuned and tinkered with and basically gave much bigger bikes a run for their money up to about 90 mph, topping out at 100mph. This video gave me goosebumps and bought back the memories. Great video!

I've had a ride on an Aprilia RS250 long ago. Such great bikes. Feels like a moped, size and weightwise, you really need to stay in the upper rev range for ANY action. Low and mid it's just brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr, once it reaches the powerband it's BWAAAAAAAHHHHHH! catapulting you forward. Parts buzzing around you, hunched behind the fairing. Additional bonus for your license: even when doing 70mph, it feels like you're in a GP race :-)
