This could be two stroke bike perfection - Shakey Byrne rides the new Langen 250 against his own classic Suzuki RGV250 in this new episode of Byrne Out. Not only that, he also gets to fire up and worship the MotoGP winning RGV500 of Kevin Schwantz. Rest assured there's a lot of smoke in this episode...
Thanks for stopping by The Late Brake Show.
Langen ( www.langenmotorcycles.co.uk/ ) is the only brand new two-stroke road bike on the market in 2022. It is a British engineered and built 250cc injected twin, weighing under 120kg and over 75bhp. As a massive fanatic of the 2-stroke Shakey Byrne has wanted to ride and review the Langen in a while, but it was the perfect excuse to dust off his restored 1991 Suzuki RGV250. Will the Langen impress? Are we glad that someone is bringing 2-stroke motorcycles back from extinction?

Huge thanks to Suzuki heritage for lending us the Schwantz RGV500 for a fire up.

Oh man...! When you opened up the Langen for the first time (at about 13:50 in the video) the hairs on the back of neck pricked up and I realised I had the biggest grin on my face...!! 🤪 One of THE best bikes I ever owned as a kid back in the early 80s was a twin-cylinder Yamaha RD200 - did absolutely nothing until about 8,000rpm and then it just flew...! Just epic... 😎

It also made you irresistible to the opposite sex. This is a fact and cannot be disputed. The sound of any tuned two stroke hitting the power band was always enough; it wasn't just the motors that went bang :-D

Passed my test on my Yam FS1E and then got the favourite of all my bikes, the Yamaha RD250LC. Oh god, she was such an amazing piece of kit, and the smell of the 2 stroke has become one of my absolutely favourite things. You don't come across it much these days, but if you're lucky enough to get up to the Isle Of Man GP, there's usually a fair few two strokes on and off the track. I binned my 250 whilst going over a roundabout, rather than around it, and my 17 year old self cried for hours. Still brings a tear to my eye. The 250, and it's big brother, the 350YPVS, were icons of the 80's, as much as Jane Fonda in spandex, the Rubiks Cube and Walkmans. God, I miss the 80's 🤣 Great job, Shakey, you're a natural 👍🏻

Mmmm, that smell 💚 Not using top quality synthetic oil=holed pistons at dawn :-D OK, that was the RD350 and TZR250; for the RGV/RS250, that'll be knackered Nicosil liners then (and a disc-valve dropping in to the cylinder to add to the fun). Fun times ;)

You can’t beat the sound of a two stroke engine. My favourite was always the Kawasaki triple.Especially when they were fitted with expansion chambers.I had an RD250 with J&R expansion chambers on it.Loved that bike, but always wanted to swap it for a KH.Never happened as i had a head on with a Mini and my love for bikes dwindled for about 15 years until i needed to “scratch that itch” yet again. Hats off to the guys who have put the Langdon together. It looks and sounds incredible

What a wonderful machine! I had over a dozen strokers in my teens and twenties, from my first little RD200, RD350, RD400E, 350 L/Cs ,RG500 an RGV250M the same as Shakey's, I loved its paint scheme but it was the banana (gullarm) swingarm that won me over and my last one an Aprilia RS250, I loved the smell, sound and power band of the two strokes and even though I'm now in my sixties and love my Street triple RS, whenever I hear or smell a stroker it takes me back to my youth.

I grew up in a time in the United States when you would hear Rd 350s and 400s buzzing around town like a pack of bees. You showing these two strokes is amazing I remember the Suzuki water buffalo the big 750 cc triple what an amazing motorcycle. I personally owned a 72 Titan 500 Suzuki that was an experimental motor that had twin gearing it had low gears for the track and had high years for the highway what a twin there was no Rd 350 or 400 ever coming close to that bike as a matter of fact I used to ride around with a guy that had a factory Star Wars painted Kawasaki 1000 and he couldn't get away from me on that 500. I have not since seen one Titan 500 ever made like that one with the extra butterfly shifter on top of the left hand side of the crank besides your standard shifter on the bottom I believe it even had a Kickstarter on the left side but I quite can't remember. That was one bike I should have held on to! Thanks for sharing the video brought back old memories for me.

Classic Two smokes are hugely popular on our trackdays, there is nothing better than standing in the holding area with 30 plus smokers waiting to head out on track. Lets hope Langen do well with their venture in resurrecting the two stroke motorcycle.

I owned several Suzuki two strokes loved them all my favorite was the GT750 a touring bike and l live in Australia and it was a great bike for covering great distances l would cruise on it at 160 kph all day and in those days you could get away with it apart the main thing that killed the 2 stroke was the emissions and it is great to see the two stroke back although in small numbers and the fact is by electronics it can meet emission stanbards in the UK welk in Australia it would meet the emission standards easily because we are not as strict as the rest of the world and the last carburetored motor vehicle sold in Australia was in 1997 and l own one a Toyota hilux and no cat converter

I had a T20 Hustler, the first 100 mph six speed 250 Twin with oil injection, clocked at 105 once. It ended going back to Japan about 35 years ago when a collector bought it off me in Auckland NZ. It always went well . 250 is plenty of bike for the average build rider … that new bike is quite impressive … I like it’s unique look. Nice to see someone doing bikes like Ariel did cars ….

i love 2 stroke street bikes, for zipping around town or cutting through the twisty's there's nothing like them, the only draw back I've ever found is that out of all of them I've ever ridden there was only one that was a good highway cruiser, the water cooled Suzuki GT 750, unlike all the other 2 strokes street bike which were fun but up at highways speeds always ended up being in the power band which isn't someplace you want a 2 stroke to be for long periods of time, instead of going from bog to OMG in the blink of an eye like the H2, the Suzuki had a nice wide linear power band that was more like a 4 stroke which made it easy to ride on the highway for long distances.......

The output is amazing. The detuned, road going, and emissions compliant version is over 300bhp/litre, from a naturally aspirated unit.

It makes you wonder what tricks and technology have enabled a two stroke to be so uncompromising. Imagine two strokes of the future to have a lubrication system like a four stroke and burn no oil. A engine along the same lines as two stroke diesels, that would be interesting.

I used to have a RD350 YPVS back in the 90’s and by golly did I love it but the Langen is absolutely stunning. I’d love to get my hands on one but for the moment it’s way out of my price range unfortunately 😔 By god does she sound incredible, really takes me back to my younger years 🥰

Fantastic sounding machine - memories of youth (and chainsaws). For such a bespoke machine, I am surprised that they have been able to keep the price down to £30k - hope it is a success for them so that they can move on with their next vision. Question is whether frame number 67 out of 100 is going to a certain ex-racer now top notch presenter
