Back in '81 when I was in college I bought a beautiful '75 Kaw 750 Mach 4 (and sold it a few years later when I bought my first new bike -- a GPZ750). The H2 was stock except for chrome Denco chambers. The sound of yours is more radical, but it brought back some great memories.

Such as shame that within (say) 10 years time there will be no-one left who is interested in these beautiful machines - we won't be messing around with jetting & porting in our 70's. We'll have the memories though. Today's youth will, as they age, be nostalgic about the wifi capability of their Chinese electric scooters in 40 years time. Not quite the same!

I set up a GT 500 for racing back in the mid 70's. Ported the cylinders, put on 38 mm Mikunis, custom pipes set for a 9000 rpm redline. The clutch would not take the power no matter what I did. I ended up replacing it with a Barnes GT 750 racing clutch parts, that cured the problem
@madmaxsdog8040
@madmaxsdog8040 2 жыл бұрын
I had the same problem with a Suzi 500 clutch, nothing I did worked so I bought an RD400 instead, they were able to race in the same class in the UK and in my opinion made a better race bike. The Suzi was ok till the power went above a certain level then the clutch just wouldn't have it. The RD clutch was easy to modify, take all the rubber rings out, add an extra steel plate and replace three of the six RD springs with Honda CG125 inner valve springs, also instead of the standard 1500cc of oil use 1300cc of ATF and change it after every race weekend. You ended up with a left fore-arm like a gorilla but it never slipped.
@marcstlouis1485
@marcstlouis1485 2 жыл бұрын
@@madmaxsdog8040 That actually sounds like more work than the fix I made with my GT 500. All I had to do was buy a aftermarket clutch kit for a GT 750 from an American company that specialized in racing parts. The GT 500 and GT 750 clutch were essentially identical and it was little more than a friction/steel plate along with the springs replacement. I think the company that made these parts has since gone out of business
@madmaxsdog8040
@madmaxsdog8040 2 жыл бұрын
@@marcstlouis1485 I live in England and didn't know about this replacement. Yeah it was probably more work but in my opinion the RD ended up being a better race bike in that class than the Suzi was. Or it just suited me better, anyhow I got better results with the RD. But maybe if I had that Barnes clutch on the Suzi?????
@marcstlouis1485
@marcstlouis1485 2 жыл бұрын
@@madmaxsdog8040 Being a mechanic for a Suzuki dealer at the time afforded me several advantages in the knowledge of "interchangeability" of parts between many of the Suzuki bikes. The only advantage the Yamaha had was the 6 speed transmission and that was limited. The transmission on the Suzuki had good spacing between the gears for a narrow power band. There was essentially nothing that could match my 500 in acceleration including the newly released GS 1000, CBX 1000 or the Z1 900, I left them all in the dust
@madmaxsdog8040
@madmaxsdog8040 2 жыл бұрын
@@marcstlouis1485 The big four pots couldn't get near me either. Better braking, higher corner speed and acceleration out of the turn meant by the time they started to gain slightly on a long straight it was time for them to brake before I did. The RD gear cluster could be very easily changed for a TZ250 / 350 set which a lot of people did. Prepping a race engine the crank needs to be done anyway so it's no problem swapping the gears at the same time. It's been interesting talking with you, I disagree slightly with some of your points but we all have opinions and if we never listen to other peoples point of view we get stuck in a rut. I wish I had known about that clutch swap at the time though.

I once rode a friend's stock T500 back in the day. My impression was that it made about 35 horsepower. Some Moto magazines embarrassed themselves by including it in the ranks of the early Super Bikes, such as the Triumph/BSA triple, the H1 Kawasaki, and the 1969 CB750. When road tested with that crowd, it promptly seized the pistons.

@vmontijo
@vmontijo 2 жыл бұрын
@@johnunderdown267 Hi John - what issues are you having with the jetting? Too rich in some parts of throttle delivery or ?? I have many 2-strokes and have spent lots of time with jetting and head scratching (!). The T-500 came with two different size carbs - I believe it was originally 34mm units and then they changed to 32mm carbs to clean up some jetting issue that original 1968 T-500 had. Sometimes the solution for a street bike is to go with slightly smaller carbs to get the air velocity higher... My (1968) T-500 is all stock, but I switched over to the smaller carbs on mine and it does run crisper... I unfortunately have no experience running chambers on my T-500 though, so my data is not worth much for your bike... I am in San Diego, and I too missed the 2-Stroke Extravaganza... it's just a bit too far for me to drive 3+ hours each way... I am the San Diego VJMC Field Rep and I want to put together a San Diego version of the 2-Stroke Extravaganza... I only own 32 2-strokes (yes 32 - not a typo!) - All Suzuki's except two pesky Yamaha's that followed me home!

@@vmontijo Wow 32! I am in Redlands near San Bernardino. My engine is far from stock so I really do need a two stroke guru to help me. So the cylinders were ported by Sundial motorsports supposedly to give me 55ish hp. Also I am running the bike on premix so no injection system Sunnoco 110 leaded race gas with Castrol 747 @ 25:1. 34mm mikunis with Uni foam filters. The expansion chambers were calculated from the cylinder specs for power through the whole range. I made the expansions.
@vmontijo
@vmontijo 2 жыл бұрын
@@johnunderdown267 Nice chambers John! Yes - you have done lots of work for sure! What are the current symptoms you are experiencing? I'm not the best at fixing carb bugs, but I am OK at it, and I have buddies that are pretty good as they used to race 2-strokes and spent lots of time on the dyno and fiddled with jetting constantly to get the most HP possible! Your bike actually sounds "ported" as it seemed to rev more freely than a stocker does... I know where Redland is... we used to go camping in Angels Crest and drove through Redlands to get there! Also I went to college at Cal Poly Pomona...
