Vstrom 1050 Review:
• Suzuki V-Strom 1050 Fu...
On any ADV group ride you go on, there is probably a rider with a v-strom. While not flashy, these bikes seem to do everything, and at a great price. What is the story of the v-strom and what kind of rider (and ride) is it for? Let's look at the story of the v-strom from 2002 to present. Pros and cons of the vstrom, development timeline, yearly changes, a buyers guide to used models, and how it compares to other bikes like the Tiger, GS, Africa Twin, KTM etc.

When doing research before buying my '19 650XT, I read of many riders going 100, 200, even > 300,000 miles on their Stroms with almost no maintenance. TWO different Suzuki dealer mechanics on the group said that they would see a Strom go out the door, and never see them again until they brought them back with > 200,000 miles on to trade in and get a new Strom, having not done anything but replace the oil, brake pads and other consumables.

When I took a recently purchased 2005 DL650 to an independent shop for an inspection, they said, “Well, I guess we won’t see you until you need an inspection next year.” Tires, brakes, oil. That’s about it.

The old V-strom 650 is my first bike after my 125cc bike that I got when I was 16. Even though it looks big and dumb, what I can say about the bike is that it's weirdly nimble and easy to handle. I literally bought the bike and felt from the first time riding it that "Yeah, this feels natural.".

Another great thing about the V-Strom: Since a lot of people think the V-Strom is ugly, fewer people would want to steal one.

I’m lucky to have ridden long and hard on many bikes in many places over the last fifty years. Three of my bikes have been new V-Strom’s (‘09, ‘12, ‘15) which I’ve collectively ridden well over 200 000 trouble free kilometers. Because I rarely ride these bikes with a pillion, and I have other bikes, I prefer the DL650. Are they perfect? Far from it. But, in many ways, they’re the perfect bike for me. The cost of ownership for my three ‘Stroms has been absurdly low, reliability has been very high - they’re easy to ride and they’re comfortable. Sure, they have a face only a mother could love but if you’re the type to be riding motorcycles more as a fashion statement than a sport, you’ll not be watching or reading this about V-Stroms - right?

Oh pshaw. They can look great if they aren't clown car colors. The '16 XT I picked up is looking fine! Murdered out with the black wire spoke wheels, Barkbusters, crash bars and Al Givi Trekkers, skiddie and smoked windshield. Love the look. Every ride, "Is that a BMW?" Nope, it's more reliable with less maintenance lol A wee bit underpowered but safer for it.

I bought the 1000 in 2004 and still have it. Still looks and rides as new. Has about 20k miles. Has only needed oil changes, plugs, and filters. Just put new tires on it yesterday. Still love it. Very versatile with Givi luggage. Great for motorcycle camping and Blue Ridge Parkway rides. A friend bought the 650 same year. When we rode together we got the same MPG, but I had alot more torque and power. Great bike for the roads in PA. Will never sell the bike!

2016 650XA/XT. I’m 6’2”, 210, 57 yrs old. I’ve spent 11.5 hours on my VStrom, and felt just great. It is a super comfortable bike to spend time on and just go to the horizon. 400kms if you don’t ride like a nutjob, very maneuverable, about 430lbs wet. I have been on forest trails, rocky boulder roads, gravel, lumpy secondary and tertiary roads mostly (preferred, avoid highways). It’s a mobile camper with the aluminum cases top loading and a large dry bag it carries all I needed for 10 days (the longest trip). I added skid plate, 12v, H4 LED, aux lights, 50/50 tires, made an $18 radiator cover from BBQ screen that fits and looks stock, removable heated grip wraps, changed the terrible windscreen (not good for my height, might for others), mirror extensions (a very good easy cheap mod to do), head light guards. Etc, a few other minor bits. Approx 66 hp and 44 fp torque - whatever, it feels good for the way I ride and for where I point it. Never let me down. This May a car cut out and the straight in, mashed into rear quarter. Woke up being wheeled in. Apparently went over the top onto the paves 30’ away, stood up and came around to pick up the bike. My Strom also survived. Replaced forks and some plastic fairing on one side. I also upgraded to stainless brake and clutch lines and a performance master cylinder. As soon as it’s warm in my garage shop it all goes back together and is reborn for the road again. It’s really good motorcycle unless you need track bike acceleration or feel you need to get some other brand name that has little stars glittering all around it. A great motorcycle for a travelling human that you’ll have lots of money left over to travel and have great adventures with. Ride eyes open.

My best riding buddy has a first year DL1000 VStrom. I’m a Harley guy myself. We’ve put on a ton of miles on trips all over the country. The VStrom has been a great reliable bike (as has my Harley). He can really hustle that thing through the twisties and also be comfortable on long hauls down interstate. Maybe it’s not for me but I get why he loves the thing...

Bought a new 2018 650 two years ago Love it, it was between the Vstrom, Honda CB500x, and the Versys 650.. for me it really came down to the motor, the Vtwin low end torque and power was the deciding factor between the 3 , plus the Vstrom community is awesome 👍

Hey, I got a 2021 VStrom 650XT in June and went cross country during the summer. With the spoke wheels and the newer design I find the bike pretty good looking. I owned a red 650 V-Strom and loved it. I'm one of those riders that wanted a comfortable, practical, bullet-proof motorcycle. It , in my opinion, has been the best motorcycle I have ever owned. Even my youngest son was won over when he went for a long ride - 3000km in 5 days. He found it a revelation in doing everything well, not exceptional, but exceptional in doing everything SO well. Starts first time no matter if it's -5 degrees or 45!

I put 60,000+ km on my '18 650 in 15 months, running heavy with camping gear, trans-continental, 90% pavement, 10% gravel and easy trails, with Shinko 705's. An affordable, reliable, moderately capable, not so flashy workhorse. The valve check + throttle body balance is a big job, plugs a little tricky, elsewise easy to maintain. Nothing breaks.

I have a 2018 VStrom 1000 and I absolutely love it. On the road is does great on long and short rides and off road it has done much better than I anticipated. I have run several single track trails as well as hill climbs, jumps, etc. No issues with the bike at all... I will however go with more of a 50/50 tire when the stock tires need replaced, as that is the only weakness I have experienced. Now keep in mind, I do not ride this nearly as aggressive as I do my 690 enduro, but I do ride it the same places. And 8 - 10 hours in the saddle of the 690 enduro is killer, but a breeze on the VStrom 1000. All depends on what type of riding you do and how you modify/accessorize your bike to fit you, your style, and your ride!!! Bang for the buck.... you can't beat the VStrom 1000! RIDE SAFE FRIENDS!

My 2018 1000XT yellow/black has been a great bike for 20,000 miles. No problems at all. I ride year round almost 100 miles each work day. It's very well engineered, cheap to operate, comfortable, and gets 50mpg overall. I've had BMW, Ducati, Honda, and Kawasaki and this DL1000 is the best package...not the best at any one thing but certainly as a whole. I bought it new with zero miles for $8900...no other bike can touch it at that price point. I'll take it any day over my previous GS1200.

Just bought a V Strom 1050 XT. The red and white colour scheme. It's bloody beautiful! To look at, to ride. The Cruise control is a marvel, stops me speeding in town and country. Really comfortable ride, feels so solid and stable on the road. Traded my DR 650E for the V Strom and there is no comparison off course! I feel the weight difference from the DR so am more careful pulling up etc. All the technology, ABS, Traction Control, Inertial control, Hill hold, the ride modes. I am loving it. Amazing protection from wind buffeting, compared to DR that is. And all the power I need, she flies, sounds good, tells me the time and air temp. What's in the tank and how far it will take me, how many kilometres per litre fuel burn. So cool!

Nailed it, Ian. The weirdest thing about owning a vstrom 650 for almost 14 years, is it's obvious shortcomings eventually become the best thing about it.....but, that takes a while to reach that inevitable conclusion. I still absolutely adore my modded up 2006, and for the riding I do, it's perfect (dirt road touring, mild jeep tracks, tarmac cruising, commuting and occasional mtb bicycle and furniture transportation - a true SUV motorcycle).

Strom is German for electricity. The V-Strom is an amazing bike, a true Swiss Army knife. Suzuki really hit the ball out of the park with it. The styling is subjective, I'd venture to say that very few adventure bikes are good looking. The Strom surely looks better than most offerings from BMW, IMHO. I've owned both V-Strom 650 and R1150GSA, each bike does something different that the other doesn't. I'm glad the market is big enough for all the choices we have!

I switched from a BMW R1200GS Adventure to a Suzuki 650XT Adventure in April 2020. Over the past riding season even with the Pandemic I managed to put slightly over 6000 miles on the bike. Ridden Interstates, to two track dirt roads. I did a track training night on the 650XT Adventure. The bike handle great on the track. Most of our ten mile sessions on the track were parade laps, no passing. Our last of 4 sessions on the track the first lap was parade the next nine ride as fast as you dare. I started 5 riders back in the pack. When the green flag came out I passed one bike. I was passed by two riders out of 15 on the track. A BMW R1000 RR and a Yamaha Sport bike ridden by a very young rider. I was holding my own, long straight the bike would catch up with me on curves I walked away from the pack. So far I love riding the bike. I don't miss the addition 550cc of the BMW. What I like the Wee Strom. I can put both feet flat on the ground at stops. The lighter weight, most noticeable when moving the bike around the garage, I no longer worry about dropping the bike top heavy pig the GS was. I average low fifties for mileage with the 650, giving the bike about 220 mile range before I start worrying about gas. Changes I have made. Installed a almost new Corbin Seat for a very low price from an add on ADV Rider. A relay switched fuse box. A set of Oxfort heated grips. I installed a Jessie top case that has been on other bikes that I have owned. A set of peg lowing brackets, make the bike feel more open. GIVI Aeroflow windshield, cut down on buffing and wind noise. Plan to install a MC Cruise, electronic cruise control unit this winter. I got one speeding ticket this past summer due to not watching the speed in a 55 mph zone, creeped up to 70 and didn't notice that I was going that fast. I am toying with the idea of running a set of Nelson Riggs soft panniers over the Suzuki aluminum cases. I mounted them for a 100 mile ride. I think I like them better, I do need to install a heat shield on the muffler if the bags are loaded and hange lower on the bike. So far no problems, I will be glad to switch the Bridgestone tires with a set of Anakee Adventures.

First I owned a 1000, then got a 2012 ABS 650, and couldn't be happier. It's a great value for the money, and can take you to Patagonia and back. Smooth engine, economical, durable, easy to maintain, reliable, are a few words that come to mind. You will have to get an aftermarket windscreen and maybe some hand guards and engine guards, but out of the box it's Suzuki's best value.

Great review of a great bike. I've only owned a few bikes, but my 2017 DL650XT is my favorite. Like you, I use a dedicated dirt bike for most off-road (2011 Husaberg FE390) but I do spend a lot of time off "pavement" because I drive 5 miles to hit pavement from my home in SW Colorado. I do wish it were lighter, but after 5mph the weight disappears. Doing 0-60 well under 4 seconds is as much as I will ever need. With a bash plate, T-Rex engine guards and Givi panniers I feel well served for what this bike was designed for. Ugly? No. I like the 2017 and up design. The overall handling and more than adequate power make this bike a perpetual winner! (I do plan to upgrade to Mitas E087s or Dunlop Trailmax Missions and add a higher wind screen (I'm 6'3" and 210 lbs) to reduce buffeting. At 72, probably my last new bike. Thanks again!

Great review, you really hit it on the nail with the VStroms. I have a 2008 VStrom 650. It’s a great bike, extremely reliable (never been into a shop), and fun to ride. Other comments posted here agree. I highly recommend it to riders mostly interested in going places on the street, but want some ability to get into the dirt. In recent years I’ve been moving towards double-track riding, and putting more dirt worthy tires on the bike made a huge difference. That being said, the bike is 12 years old, and I’ve been thinking about getting the KTM 890 Adventure. Your commentary on the 890 was very useful.

I believe when Suzuki chose the german word "Strom" they were referring to "Power". The problem is the translation of strom to power it is more on the electricity side, not so much meaning powerful. There are multiple ways to use the word strom mostly to describe something that flows.

I have owned my 2006 v-strom 1000 for seven years and used it primarily as a two up tourer but after the split, I invested in off-road tires, crash bars, skid plate and a number of other things like bark busters and dirt bike bars etc... I took it up to the top of mt. Hull in mendocino county in California from ukiah to covelo up the m1 which is more of a trail than a road. Although most people were on 450s and the like, I still made it although I realized I have to learn a different style of riding. After almost four decades, that’s not going to be eay! But I am always one to keep going at all costs so I guess I will have to learn! Happy trails!

I just bought a 2007 DL1000 with over 40,000 miles on it for $2800! It's blue, with Givi luggage, top case and windscreen. I have owned 3 different BMW's and all the Japanese brands. So far it's still to wet here in Washington to ride very far. Can't wait to ride it. I also added a center stand for easier chain maintenance.

I really wanted a V-Strom 650 a few years ago when I was upgrading from my GS500, but the newer ones were out of my price range and the older ones had (to me at the time) ridiculously high mileage (150K KM and above. We ride year round here in Israel and bikes are used as primary modes of transportation, especially ADV ones) so I got an NC700X and found my happy place there. But I still think the V-Strom is one heck of a good bike, and certainly deserves all the praise it's been getting through the years.

Only 45,000 km on it due to covid, but I'm back on it again now with covid precautions and doing about 1000 km a week. It's been perfect except for no cruise control. Fire trails to highways, it's done it all, and done it on road tyres. Never dropped, never stopped.

He added a couple extra thousand KMs (and several beatings). He sold the V-Strom to someone else for $1,750 at 92,000+ KMs Just a great machine, despite its off-road limitations - it needed nothing but gas, oil and air.

I've got a 14 650 Strom in the shop, a great bike, but it's on the auction block. It was my first street bike since my KZ650 back in the late 70s after many years of off road (yea, I'm old!). The Strom did everything decent and was a good reentry platform to see if I'd like street/adventure bikes. A bit of off road on the Strom convinced me I'll leave anything more than fire roads to my KTM500EXC. The plan was to keep the Strom for another year and see how some of the newer ADV bikes panned out like the T7, KTM790/890 (loved your vids on these bikes as well) and upgrade once I see where I landed in the market place. That plan sounded good until I ran across a great deal on a well farkled, low mile Honda AT. Your vid on the AT helped seal the deal, so I picked it up about a month ago. I had no issues with the Strom it's a great bike, however the AT does most everything a bit better and was an excellent upgrade, (the jury's still out on the DCT but I think I like it). Keep up the great work Ian!!

Had an old XR250 for that. I don't know why people think it's ugly though. Not the old ones at least. Not really a fan of the looks of the new ones with the beak. Kinda dorky. No repairs needed so far, only maintenance and wear items like a clutch, chains, bearings etc. It is a shit dirtbike but it will do everything without too much hassle. That´s actually a very accurate opinion on the V-Strom. Nice work. I´ve had my 1000 K3 since forever, and although i have considered other bikes, after test drives i just can´t seem to justify trading in mine, that still works stupidly well, but has no resale value to make a trade worth it. Mine has over 100 000 kms on the odo, and the only problem i have ever had, was a plug issue that was easily solved by removing the plug, and re-wiring the cables. Other than that, it´s gas, and regular maintenance. Never forgetting the TBS sync every 2 or 3 maintenance intervals if you want smooth running! My wife also speaks very highly of the passenger perch, and that's always very important. One issue i had with mine that really annoyed me, was the helmet buffeting, that i solved with some acrylic deflectors. I actually made a video on them the day 😁 Take a look if you like, it really made a huge diference to my bike, and may also help you guys out 😃 kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qK6mktGGmJvFaZc.html&t In my honest opinion, i still think this old model was the best looking. Still love the front 😁😁

I think one great thing about the V-Strom is that the 650 can be found in learner legal form in Europe and Aus/NZ. I was looking to get into motorcycling purely for the adventure camping side of things, and the V-Strom was the most highway capable option available. Not much more expensive than the CB500X, and way cheaper than the Tenere, if I were even permitted to ride the Tenere.

I've been riding since I was 14 and have had a wide variety of motorcycles over the years, from my first Honda S90 all the way to big cruisers (1300 cc and 1800 cc), a Valkyrie Tourer with six carbs and six exhaust pipes, a Goldwing with everything (except the airbag) and as I age I'm looking to get back to two things: 1) a bike I can take on a wide variety of road surfaces, from pavement to gravel and dirt, and 2) a bike that's dependable and light enough that I can keep it until I'm done riding. To achieve that, I recently bought a 2009 V-Strom 650 ABS that has NEVER been off pavement. The owner added Givi bags and trunk, heated grips, Givi engine guard, a skid plate, highway pegs, a throttle lock, a taller, adjustable windshield, a fork brace and a Sargent seat. I took it out on a gravel road last week and the Shinko 705's handled very well. This SHOULD be a bike I can ride for long time. Glad to see lots of reviews and info online............. by the way, maybe I bought the only V-Strom that isn't ugly?/

Thought about buying one, but in Oz they've got a strong following so you pay a premium second hand, whereas the old KLR is looked down upon and cheap. The 650 V-strom XT is about 13k in Oz and there is competition in that price range. And for a bit more the T7 and new 850 Triumph will sell for around 16K. So unless the 650 strom gets a facelift like the 1050, it might be over for the V-Strom.

I stepped “down” to a 2007 650 VStrom after an entanglement with the highway and a red Cadillac on my 2005 FZ1. The VStrom: wants to sit on 80 all day long; 48mpg; eats up any curves you throw at it, without any weight to wear you out; sounds and feels like a sewing machine (no vibration at all); nice size fuel tank; MadStad bracket cured most of my wind issues; that small windshield protects you from so much rain and bugs; ride 600 miles one day and get up and repeat all week long. No pressure or pain to wrist, back, or rear end. I got 10,000 miles out of the rear tire/18,000 out of the front. Knew I would never go off-road with it so I put a good set of Michelins on it. I can fit 3 cartons of paper on (yes, I have had to do that before!). The most utilitarian motorcycle I’ve ridden. I’ve tried to sell it, and have actually bought a couple of other bikes along the way, but there has been no interest for anyone to take the VStrom off my hands, so I sold the Honda ST1300 and the Road King and will likely finish out my days in this one, as the newer one are definitely not to my taste. Get one. They’re cheap. It’s what motorcycling is about.
