We used a Hydrovane on our circumnavigation in the 1980s, steering in light air across the doldrums, steering in storms in the North Sea, using one now on our voyage across the Atlantic. Hydrovane is the best piece of gear an offshore sailor could wish for.

Thanks for the link. They don't have my Ericson 41 in their list, but I know that would not be a problem for them. With the correct measurements they could put one together rather quickly. No problem for them. I did look up the price for my old Albin Vega that I had. Dang! It's $6752! That's twice what I paid for that boat! I sold it for $3500. I'm not keeping my Ericson 41. I'd like to get a Formosa 41 or larger Formosa. And yeah, I'll probably go with the Hydrovane. They are the best.

Good info, thanks! And the fact that the vane rudder is much further aft and of the “spade” type, it should have much more authority that the raked barn door rudder on the keel. I had an Alberg 35 and this was one feature that I didn’t like. Some people actually mounted a second spade rudder on the counter and used the barn door as trim only. This essentially does this AND give you good self steering. What a winner.

Belt (tangs) and suspenders (Hydrovane) - great to see. And of course -just in case- the drogue. btw every sailor I met in the Bahamas has seen your video and is talking about your rudder incident and drogue workaround, or they're planning to watch it - everyone is learning from your experience. Great contribution to sailing. Can't wait to read the article in Cruising.

Glad to see Triteia is getting a HydroVane -- you're way ahead of me on the installation, but got one for my ODay 30 -- found the HydroVane folks truly wonderful to communicate with, both in various recommendations for mine (to me mounted off-center due to swim-ladder, and boat rudder position) as well what was eventually shipped, when it will arrive (months ago) and even the fact they felt they'd over billed me by accident and reduced the price (something I'd not have been any wiser about, except that they told... ) Surely is a refreshingly impressive and robust looking steering vane...

Yes Many GGR racers use the Hydrovane. You might like to know that One of those racers Kirsten Neuschaffer, whom I met here in eastern Canada Has installed a new Hydrovane on her Cape George 36… As well she upgraded the entire mounting brackets and connecting pipes on that Hydrovane This equipment was fabricated locally in PEI. It’s bullet proof for sure. And what a boat she has, I think she is definitely a contender to win! And what a sailor, she left Nova Scotia Canada in November and sailed to South Africa as a Shake down cruise….

When installing mine recently I looked at how to transfer the shape of the transom onto the teak wood mount, including tracing an accurate line and using an electric sander. I soon figured that the only way to be sure was to tape 60 grit sand paper facing out, on the transom with super strong tape at exactly the right place; draw hatching with pencil on the back of the mount to provide a progress guide and start rubbing in in 1cm movements. That teak is hard! It took over three thousand rubs, a few hours, and twenty different sheets of sandpaper but little by little the hatching disappeared as the wood adopted the shape; the last little island of original wood took an age to disappear, but disappear it did. Result - a perfect fit with no wobble.

The Hydrovane is especially good for an Alberg because the rudder steers from the actual stern of the boat Versus the other types which use the original rudder which itself is centred one third of the way forward from the stern and along the trailing edge of the keel. So, better leverage, less stress on the steering equipment…

Happy sailing james ....does that thing use self locking nuts in the cast upper and lower mountings.. you wouldnt want them working loose in deep water. Good to see Salty🦋 back and in good health.. she needs to keep taking the full course of Malarial meds. There's a report on Whale sharks getting hit by ship and boat propellors in migration waters where they cross shipping lanes. Unlike whales and dolphins they dont float so they sink if they stop swimming so its hard to establish the losses. Unlike the Atlantic Right whales they ha,vent come up with a interactive sonar boy system to sen e whales and ships and get the ships to slow down so the whales can get out the way.

Well,,,,whatever. You won't be leaving that Sea Squid behind anytime soon. Glad to see someone FINALLY did a vid on a Hydrovane install. Erick NBJS is not enamored with his wind steering. He uses the electric to keep a more steady course most always. With your upgraded electrics, keeping a hungry auto-pilot fed will be far easier. You have the advanced points of a 30' boat here. ,,,,,AND it's an Alberg design. It would not surprise me at all to find the inventor of the Hydrovane tested the prototypes on an Alberg 30. I mean c'mon man,,,,,,,it's a little freight train windward.

I don’t know you and I only heard of you yesterday. The first video I saw was your journey to Hawaii. 5 days in you talk about your wife left you. This hit me in my heart. Anyway, later you mentioned this hydrovane and my mind said I bet they’d hook you up if they knew your story. Now I see this. Good for you sir. I purposely went looking for a video with your ex wife. You seem happier now…..like you are so much more authentic. Maybe your journey changed you, or maybe you changed who you were for her. I don’t know. Either way, I Identify with so much you have to say. I appreciate you and I appreciate you sharing your time and experience Also, I like the design of the new rudder with the top support looks like a hinge and the bottom support mounted in clamps so if you hit something it will hopefully pull out rather than just break off.

I am looking for a solution to the line that is looped to cockpit to adjust wind vane. I have not been able to melt the two ends together in a way that holds up under normal usage. Do you or anyone have any suggestions. The rigging folks at West Marine said that would not work. I know lines can be spliced but this is 3/16th. The smallest fid I have is 1/4. Any suggestions?

I have had the same problem and ended up tying a knot between them, which is mildly annoying but worked ok for 6000+ miles this season… I will try and remelt them soon.
@scottmc59

@@SailorJames I just watched their install video again. Looks so easy. I may have wrong line. Also weve sailed with it now and she says it won’t work if line has salt on it. I tied a knot also but I’m limited in range. Can’t even get to beam reach. I bought a double length line run back to cockpit. It will work for now but really need to create that loop. I think it’s a major weakness in the design to be dependent on that tiny line melted together to hold.

This may be a dumb question but I never hear anyone discuss it on any of the channels I follow. When do you sleep when doing that 30 day crossing? Isn’t there supposed to be a watch at all times? I had a friend tell me a story how a sailboat hit a huge cargo container out in the middle of the ocean in the middle of the night, they did not see it and did not have good instruments apparently, (it had fallen off a cargo ship) they literally had to abandon their boat as it began sinking. It took two days for them to be rescued on their rescue inflatable. That story alone freaked me out. When the hell do you sleep?
@SailorJames
@SailorJames 2 жыл бұрын
I talk at length about my sleep schedule on this video… What I Learned On My First Solo Ocean Crossing; Ship Handling to Sleep, Gear Failure to Landfall! kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gNaFZqSVxJfUnGw.html It’s impossible for solo sailors to watch and as far as containers go you would not see them at night nor would radar pick them up. It is likely what I struck that damaged my rudder. The process I described in that video link is the same system all the solo ocean sailors I know use.

@triteia that was some bs dude. there was no reason to mount the mountpad with epoxy vs 5200 unless you were to sand the paint OFF as epoxy prep. why didnt you just 5200? that whole spiel made no sense. @@SailorJames yer missing the point. epoxy is not a bond on paint. at best, its not very compressible, and will eventually fissure. i was really bummed when you didnt surface prep for epoxy? i was like he must be using a sealant backing plate to firm up a mechanical bolting?
