Suzuki SV650 & Yamaha MT-07 (FZ-07) Good Touring Bikes? [Comparison & Mini Adventure]
In this video we went on a small adventure to see if the MT07 and SV650 will hold up against a lot of miles in one day. At the end we did a small comparison which bike would work better!

Every bike is a touring bike if you tour on it. I've taken camping trips for days and hundreds of miles on a 90's ninja 250. Gotta get your butt used to the bike. And there's no such thing as "not designed for touring" once an engine is running it makes no difference to the engine. It could be 20 miles or 1000 as long as your valves are in spec and your fuel system is fueling, the engine has no opinions about it. Awesome video, i enjoyed watching! I just like to spread the word that you don't need a huge expensive bike to go where you want to go and take the trips you want to take!

I bought a SV650N in 2007. I kept it 1 year and 4000 kms. I changed it for a v-strom, nothing to compare on fuel mileage and comfort. I kept the v-strom 11 years and 60000 kms before reselling it easily (one week) and buying myself a second hand Versys 1000

I toured extensively on a 2007 Sv650 and it was fine, except for the fact my buddy on his Multistrada would kill my bike when we had use interstates to connect to the twisties. Smaller fuel tank was not really a problem because it's a good idea to stretch every two or three hours. I DID upgrade to a liter bike eventually -- Triumph Sprint ST.

I've owned my 2017 FZ-07 for almost 1 year now. The only upgrades anyone needs and I made are the comfort seat and the flyscreen. The flyscreen is very small but somehow manages to deflect a lot of wind away from the rider. The comfort seat is self explanatory. Excellent review. As for long distance touring, I'd much rather take a FZ-07 over a supersport like the R1 or R6. Much more comfortable and much better fuel mileage.

I tour with a 2002 SV650S , people always tell me how uncomfortable it must be... It's not... 500 kms on my Honda Shadow I can't walk, 1200km on my SV and I can get off without pain... If you have core strength, aggressive riding style doesn't hurt a bit... Now, if you are soft and out of shape, yes sport bikes will hurt your core muscles until they tone up.... You will get used to it if you try... Oh and I am 51 with a back injury, slipped and herniated discs....

Great video and I find you more trust worthy than some of the bigger channels that don't want to piss any brands off. It's just plain honest thoughts. Anyway I've found in my short two years experience that looking into what bikes CAN do is a ball ache when put to the test, an extreme example is you CAN go round the world on a 125cc sport bike but don't obviously hahah I went around Scotland on my moto guzzi bobber 900 with the intention of wild camping, ended up paying for campsites and it just rained heavy every day so I'll be doing cheap hotel's next time. Great if it's you're only option though.

I have the FZ 07 with a windshield that helps a bit. A little easy trick for extra seat comfort; I bought a pair of padded bicycling underwear from Performance Bike and those help reduce the pressure points. The pants are designed to wear under normal shorts and, although they feel at first like you are wearing a diaper, the comfort improvement is very noticeable. Haven't tried Gel pads as yet. At times I am tempted to buy a cruiser just to be more comfortable on highways, but the FZ is a blast on twisty roads, whereas cruisers are not so much. Safe and joyful riding to all.

Thank you for the video. I have a 2016 FZ07 and wanted to see the Nelson Rigg 1060S tail bag on a bike. Currently I have a Kriega 10 but it's a real pain to get things in and out of it the way it is designed. It's a great bag but not convenient at all. Also, I was looking at the R.A.M. mounts for my iPhone and see you have one. I really like where you have it mounted. What exactly is it mounted TO and what parts did you use to mount it? Thanks for any info about the R.A.M. mounts.

Thanks for commenting :) so ya Nelson rigg is super convenient because you can strap it to the frame under the rear seat which would allow you to attach it and remove it at anytime which sooooo good. As for the phone mount i actually have a video on my channel “Best phone mount solution” which guides you on how I installed it and all the parts I used with all the links in the description. Hope this helped :)

After I watched this video I subscribed and saw the phone mount video. Thanks. I like how the phone sits flush with the display. The double socket arm that is in-between the phone and the mount on the bike that was bolted on.......RAM has 3 different sizes. Since I wanted it to sit flush like you have it do you know the measurement of the double socket arm? RAM's come in 2.38", 3.69", and 6" for the overall length. I thought I would ask before I ordered mine. Thanks.

Also, what was the average distance you did between gas stations? Just curious as I would like to do a 650km trip some time, but need to plan ahead with the MT-07... I get roughly around 200kms on a tank (about 9-10 liters)... Should be able to push it to about 230-250 though....

Joy Buning the main difference is styling. The engines are different, of course, as well. The SV650 has a V Twin engine with lots of low end torque while the MT 07 has a twin parallel. Both have around 75hp and both are great bikes. I chose the SV650 over the MT07 because of the timeless style. In 10 years it will still look stylish! Watch some comparison videos of the two and you will see most people say it comes down to style preference

It is much harder (but still comfortable) and the foam still offer support after hours of riding. Not sure if it is better than gel insert or gel cover or air cover, but I like being able to do some sporty riding while touring and it works great for that.

cerealk53 thanks for your input. Seat upgrade is on my list, i don't like how the front of mine opens up and leaves a gap when I'm sitting on the back end of the seat. All the same the seat is good for casual riding but i do intend for a bit of touring in the future.

Reading Jupiter's Travels at the moment and he rode round the world on an old Triumph through the most apalling conditions. Even these mid priced naked are a magnitude better in every respect (apart from perhaps their tolerance for crappy fuel). I think you can tour on anything. But for the money you'd obviously get a Versys, an older Africa Twin or similar with better luggage options.

Seat hardness on the SV has been an issue going all the way back to 2009 with the Gladius. Also there have been complaints about mirror adjustment on the SV as it seems to use the same mirrors I had on my 1996 GSF 600 Bandit which required the tool kit to make an adjustment. I understand the SV is a budget/value bike like the MT07 and z650 but for the life of me, I don't know why Suzuki hasn't addressed these simple issues. Put another 1/2 inch of foam on the seats for goodness sake. I don't think the increase in seat height of 0.5 inches is going to destroy sales. Also, since the introduction of the new SV in 2016/17, I don't think Suzuki has done anything new to their model except the paint scheme each year for the last 3 years....perhaps addition of ABS. Both SV and the GSX-S models are still using an old box style steel swingarm while every other major manufacturer has gone to a cast aluminum swingarm...not sure if there is a major weight difference (I would think it would help decrease the weight slightly of the SV allowing it to compete better with the lighter z650 and MT07). I had that same steel box swingarm on my 1996 Bandit. Love the SV and perhaps Suzuki is worried about making changes that could affect sales like they did with the Gladius. But outside of engine performance increases in 2016, nothing seems to have changed at all, year after year, outside of paint color. Add a cast aluminum swingarm, a bit more padding on the seat, better adjustable mirrors, and petal discs would give an updated look without a major price increase or destroying the classic look IMO.

Are these good starter bikes? I’ll be doing some city riding and occasional highway riding for at most 35mins.

If you are confident in your abilities go for it, if not... go for something smaller :)

I can get about 180miles out of my sv650 before the gas indicator comes on. Still has about 50 miles after that before I am running on empty. It is pretty rare that I find myself somewhere with over 230 miles between gas stops. My sv is a 2007 model though. Not sure if the tank size has gotten smaller since.

Yes, the Gen 3 models have a 0.7 US gal smaller tank than the 2nd Gen models. So only 3.8 vs 4.5 gal (14.5 L vs 17 L). Combined with the harder seat of the new model, they're not as good for touring as the previous model.

I have 2018 mt-07. I couldn't ride for more than an hour because of the seat. I didn't get a new seat. I got padded bicycle pants. I now ride regularly for 4 hours a day without the pain the in the ass.
