SVA Library and SVA Cartoon Allies presents 100 Years of Genius: The Life and Legacy of Will Eisner, an intimate conversation between Frank Miller and Klaus Janson, who will discuss the pioneering comics-industry legend and former SVA faculty member Will Eisner.
Frank Miller, comic book writer and artist, film director, screenwriter and producer is best known for his comic works Batman: The Dark Knight, Ronin, Sin City and 300.
SVA faculty member Klaus Janson is a comic book artist best known for his work on the comic series The Dark Knight, Daredevil, Punisher and Superman.

I was glad that my friend Joanthony invited me to this event. I was happy to ask Frank after he picked me out of the crowd saying " No, I'm picking you" and hilariously joking to him "You don't know what you have done Frank!". But when I proceeded to ask "Was there any projects that you, Klaus and Eisner wanted to collaborate on" and his hilarious response imagining what Eisner would have said ,It was just a great moment that I treasure.

The story "Master Race" was written by Al Feldstein, not by Harvey Kurtzman.

True! And it's pretty obvious, too, just by that lettering that all the Feldstein stories had. But they are right, Kurtzman was really precies in his breakdowns and didn't like artists deviating from them, someone like Krigstein, a progressive, intellectual artists with many ideas and strong opinions about comic book storytelling and also the need to experiment, wasn't an ideal partner for him to work with (same goes for Alex Toth) . The only instance where they did (that I can remember, there may have been more) was the Bringing Up Father parody from MAD. Bill Elder drew parts of that and he and Kurtzman were NOT happy with Krigstein's work. Well, even geniuses can be wrong, because it's awesome. Krigstein, man. He was something else.

Will told me that Jerry Siegle brought Superman to him and he told them that the fact that they were coming off of a Pulp magazine story that it might not be a good idea,and they might get some flack from that, other wise take their drawings home and tighten them up bring them back and they will see what they could from there.These people falsely left everyone with the idea that he tuned it down wich to me makes Will look bad and is a flat out lie, he is gone now with no way to defend himself. Well I'm still alive and was a very good friend, so I will at times set the story straight when it needs to be.I have a great deal of respect for both of these Artists but keep it real. And I mean that from the heart......Jim Collins,..Memphis, Tn. I was also privately tutored by Will in Basic drawing in the mid 60s, Now I am a retired realistic Pictorial Artist on 14'x 48' foot billboards and now a freelance illustrator, portrait artist, Cartoonist, Comic Strip Artist Etc > See you in the Funny Papers

Frank Miller has become a burn out and is like a bloated ELVIS of the 70'S.His style and ideas have dwindled.He was once GREAT but now is a shadow of his formal youthful self.He is a joke to me! His SPIRIT film was a disgrace and he looks physically awful! I give him a capital F for that film and the second SIN CITY! there i said it! Your thoughts?

I very much liked his Daredevil and Batman Dark Knight Returns and Year One period etc, but I don't like the direction his art moved toward - thick figures with big clumpy hands and feet. That seems to be his style now and his anatomy has moved away from realism. Maybe he can't draw that way any more? Seems sort of like it.

Miller gave us his all. I’m grateful for his effort. His work has enriched my life and continues to speak to the potential of the medium. We all get old. We all falter. Learn from him. Take what you need and leave the rest.
