Ian Cairns Yup! Puts electric guitars to shame!
@SvartsotOfficial
@SvartsotOfficial 8 жыл бұрын
+Andrzej Ochał - There aren't any whistles in this track though (Hans-Jørgen plays tin whistles, and not actual flutes) - just bagpipes. But at the same time, and also in reply to Ian Cairns, I would postulate that Svartsot would sound like most other folk metal bands, if we didn't use the guitar as a main melody instrument on a par with the folk instruments. If we're gonna be truthful, most other folk metal bands really have 2 rhythm guitarists and some folk instruments or keyboards playing the melodies. That's not really that metal though. Metal has always been driven by lead guitars playing melodies over the rhythm guitar - Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Death, Opeth, old In Flames to name just a few - the list could go on for ever...

+Andrzej Ochał - hehe, no problem ;). In Danish we only have one word for both types of instrument (flutes and whistles are both called "fløjter"), but they are kinda 2 different types of instrument really - and have two different names in English. Glad to hear that you like the song, and yes, we're are certainly not planning on stopping yet! Work on the new material is progressing slowly though, due personal commitments and busy private lives. Also, we would prefer to work slowly on material, making sure it is the best we can do at the given time, rather than just writing any old shite and releasing half arsed albums.

Here we can see a highly underrated band, in the beautiful land of Denmark, showing true ancient folklore induced heavy-metal. This needs to go up up up!!! And this is the first time I'm seeing a band replying not just one but even the replies of that comment!! So what's the meaning of Svartsot, I'm pretty sure that's Danish word or maybe Swedish word? When can you guys come to USA? And, listening to your albums on Spotify from last 12 hours, can turn me into Viking? Also, it's hard to understand the language, but what are your lyrics based on, Pagan, Vikings, or just folklore stories of locals?
@SvartsotOfficial
@SvartsotOfficial 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your cool comment and genuine interest! "Svartsot" means "black sickness" in older Danish, but I believe the term is still used in Swedish. In Denmark, it was some kind of liver failure, where the build up of toxins in the body would give the skin a dark almost blackish colour. We have no immediate plans for playing in the US, and the chance has not yet arosen. But who knows what will happen in the future? Regarding the last 2 questions. Our lyrics are about the history and folklore of Denmark. This song is about medieval midsummer traditions (building a fire to ward off evil spirits on the shortest night of the year), thus based on a christian period of our history, but with overtones stretching back to pre-christian times. Our last two albums and the material we are currently working on are set in the Middle Ages, but we have previously used a broader time period, including the Viking Age, but these days we avoid Vikings, as they have become tiresome through mass exposure during the past decade or so (our history and heritage has much more to offer!). And as for our music turning you into a Scandinavian pirate from a thousand plus years ago - I don't think that is possible according to the laws of physics... :D
@Mocktailmetal
@Mocktailmetal 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the reply, this is fascinating,... The word 'Svar' in ancient Sanskrit means sun, and 'sot'(pronounced as 'soot') means 'destruction,' so literary sun destruction causing darkness. That's why I found interest in the word. and now that you described the song lyrics, it's the same tradition written in one of the ancient Sanskrit texts called Vedas. it's still, in the present, celebrated in Indian culture (they celebrate between spring and summer). hmmm, interesting what are the odds of connections between ancient cultures?

I love how you made me feel longing for a culture I never knew I want to be a part of. @@xiaoyu88 We think it is awesome that people write the cool comments they do, and they should be recognised. Sure, we play because we want to and we play what we want - but people out there seem to want to hear what we play, and is cool to interact with them :). Also those who have less positive things to say, they too are fun to interact with, just in a different way. Regarding your questions: 1) Yes, we ship to everywhere that has a postal system, so pretty much worldwide. 2) Yes, our shop is through PayPal, because that was easiest for us when we had to make our present online store - if you prefer not to use PayPal then feel free to send a mail to us at info[at]svartsot[dot]dk, and we will work something else out. But generally PayPal is cheaper for everyone than bank transfers. 3) We have completely sold out of Ravnenes Saga, and actually also maledictus eris. I can't even remember how many Mulmets Viser we have left, if any. These will unfortunately remain out of stock until all of the terms of our contract with our previous label have expired. They have no wish to press more, and we may not get any pressed ourselves. In this case, digital is actually the best way to support us, even though it supports our ex-label too.

+Goliperku I think you must be a little confused as to who to look at and where to look in the video. The song is very much from the new album (released 20-02-2015 and available from shop.svartsot.dk) and the video was shot this summer just gone. The young children on the video are children from band members and our friends. Freja is not related to any of us (as far as I know) but participated later on the day of filming outdoors scenes when we needed more people. She is not one of the youngest children :)

For some reason, there has only been a small handful of folk metal bands here in Denmark in total. So I can't really blame you for not knowing of others than us. But having said that, we have played in Switzerland a few times (although not since 2015) with other, quite popular folk metal bands, such as Týr (in 2008) as well as Metsatöll and Arkona (in 2015). We have also played festivals such as Fiesta Pagana in 2008 and Meh Suff in 2010. So we are probably due to come back again soon, when the current pandemic is over... ;) Maybe to support our coming album?

@SvartsotOfficial
@SvartsotOfficial 5 жыл бұрын
We'll let you into a little secret. The video alludes to a past that never actually existed in the way we portray it, and is thus not representative of any real identity. The reason why we in Svartsot have claimed to play a type of 'medieval metal' whilst many of our fans - even Danes, who should know better, as they understand the lyrics - claim we represent Vikings, is because none of it existed in the way it is portrayed by us. So basically, the 'identity' is utter bullshit. But you're right - we don't apologise for that.

A song from Kumbl came up as a recommendation on Spotify. Really loved the artwork so gave it a go. Then I listened to the whole album 3 times in a row. And it's been on repeat for a week now. Really cool stuff. I love the medieval/renaissance feel to the songs. I'm saving up to buy the CD as well. Well done.

Lodbrok was Swedish.
@SvartsotOfficial
@SvartsotOfficial 7 жыл бұрын
Regnar Lodbrog is known from the Danish historian Saxo Grammaticus (his history was more akin to retelling of legends rather than actual history) and from the Icelandic Saga about him specifically. According to these sources, he was the son of the Swedish king (Sigurd) Ring, who had become the king of Denmark after defeating the Danish king Harald Hildetand at the battle of Bråvalla. Therefore Regnar was king of Denmark - Sweden is never mentioned as being under his rule, but his adventures take place in Denmark, Norway, Sweden, England and possibly also France. There is, however, no historical evidence of him actually existing. His sons do seem to be more historical (especially Ivar, Sigurd and Bjørn) and are most often connected with the Great Heathen Army that invaded England in the 860's and 870's. They are always mentioned in the sources as being Danish.

At exactly the time you wrote this comment, we were stood on stage for the first time since September last year. But until the pandemic has been subdued some more, we are not likely to play anywhere outside of Denmark, and under strict guidelines at seating-only shows at that. So whilst we really appreciate the positive comment, I'd recommend waiting a while yet, if you do decide to travel 😉Stay safe!

I just wanted to tell you, Svartsot, thank you for existing. No sarcasm, earnestly, the world is better with you around. A random suggestion on my Deezer account, far from what I usually listen (power metal) for Midsommer, and so much quality folk Metal opening up, Skalmold, Finntroll, Hantaoma, and Svartsot first. Dayum!

I think it is only fitting for us to say thank YOU - not just for the comment, but also for listening to us. If nobody listened to us, then it really wouldn't matter if we were around or not. But we are glad that we could be a part of opening up to new musical options for you. If you like power metal with a folk influence, I can recommend the Swedish band Falconer, or even our own fellow countrymen in Wuthering Heights
