Baoxing County, affiliated to Ya'an City, Sichuan Province, is located in the west of Sichuan Province and on the western edge of the Sichuan Basin, with a total area of 3,114 square kilometers. As of October 2021, Baoxing County has jurisdiction over 3 towns and 4 townships (including 1 ethnic township). Baoxing County borders Lushan to the east, Tianquan to the south, Kangding to the west, Xiaojin to the north, and Wenchuan to the northeast. It is 200 kilometers away from Chengdu. Baoxing Fengtongzhai is the first place in the world where giant pandas were discovered and is known as the "Hometown of Giant Pandas". On June 30, 2020, it was selected into the "Second Batch of Counties for the Protection and Utilization of Revolutionary Cultural Relics". On July 29, 2020, it was selected into the list of national health towns (counties) reconfirmed in 2019.
In 2023, Baoxing County's regional GDP will reach 5.089 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 6.9% based on comparable prices.

Shenmulei is located in Baoxing County, Sichuan, about 50 kilometers away from the county seat and about 3,000 meters above sea level. Shenmulei Original Ecological Scenic Area is located in the west of Qi Qi Tibetan Township, Baoxing. It is affiliated to Jiajinshan National Forest Park and the provincial scenic spot Jiajinshan Scenic Area. In one part, the scenic area covers an area of about 40 square kilometers, with an altitude of 2,300 to 4,300 meters. The main landscape is forests, snow-capped mountains, streams, alpine meadows, and alpine calcified flow ponds.
In January 2016, the National Tourism Administration and the Ministry of Environmental Protection planned to identify the Shenmulei Ecotourism Zone in Ya'an City, Sichuan Province as a national ecotourism demonstration zone.
