There is not a great deal of film of Svetlana Beriosova in performance so it was wonderful when a very kind friend sent me the movie with this solo.
Robert Helpmann also dances in the movie, joining the ballerina at the end of her solo. He makes a fine job of performing with his long devil’s tail!
It may be Helpmann’s last dance appearance on film.
IMDb says of the movie:
“A combination of story, melodrama and ballet sets the stage for some of Stravinsky's most brilliant music. This terrific film adaption of The Soldier's Tale offers rare footage of the Royal Ballet's Svetlana Beriosova, who performs in an extended dance sequence towards the story's end. Meanwhile, Robert Helpmann is in his element as the Devil, being the natural choice to play the eight different roles of the Devil using his brilliant talent for mime, dance and acting. Actor Brian Phelan does a fine job as the hapless soldier.”

Beriosova was such a wonderful dancer (okay, the parts with Helpmann are rather campy). I'm glad to see ANYTHING with her in it. Thnx!

Lovely! Her arms and her turns are especially nice, however, the first thing I noticed was her musicality, that is, musical phrasing, as well as her neat precision.

Thank you for uncovering this treasure. I was fortunate to know her after her retirement. She was as lovely a human being as she was a dancer. I am grateful for the memories.

Maravillosa bailarina Beriosoba. Gracias

Beriosova is such a lovely dancer - she's so fluid in her dancing, you don't see where one step ends and the next begins, it unspools in an unbroken line. Do you know who was the choreographer? (the IMDB entry didn't say). Also, where was this filmed? It looks like a museum (though the floor looks a bit hard for dancing on!)

totally agree - a flow of movement and not position to position. i have searched unsuccessfully to determine the choreographer - perhaps Helpmann? and the location has eluded me also :( yes, that marble (?) floor looks hard for dancing!

@@JohnRaymondHall I think the location was Syon Hall . Solid, unforgiving marble floor for ballet dancing.

The violinist was tough to compete with. He had great presence. She was a lovely dancer, but the choreography lacked imagination. And what a floor to dance on. What film is this from?
