This is the best version I’ve heard for learning the swallowtail jig, the standard I’m playing at the moment it’s writing with the tempo of the slower so with practice I hope to get up to the speed you got to. I’ve subscribed to your channel and hopefully I can learn more of your reels and gigs in this format, thank you very much and very well done onwards and upwards from here. Reg. X.

Thank you SO much for this! My 11-year-old granddaughter started learning the fiddle from me three years ago. I don't play fiddle, and I don't read music except for choral music. So we are doing everything by ear. Typically I go to KZfaq and play various fiddle tunes, most of which I have played at various times on banjo. Anyway, when I played this tune for her, she immediately said, "I want to learn that one." I was only vaguely familiar with the tune, so when I found this version, it has made figuring it out so much simpler! All I have to do is memorize the tune, which is no big deal, then I teach it to her. She is just getting started on it. You can check my channel to see some of the tunes we have figured out. The left hand is always easier, by the way, because all we have to do is memorize the notes and the rhythm. The bowing is still a mystery, especially how to go about getting her to use her wrist more. It's a natural thing to do on the guitar, but on the fiddle it seems a lot more difficult. Thank again!

Hi, I absolutely loved to hear this, thank you!! A quick tip about the bow arm. First of all the THUMB must be flexible. Study up about the classical bow hold and then just relax it a bit and move it up the bow a bit for the fiddle hold. Then for the lower half of the bow (frog to middle) the motion is coming from the shoulder. And the upper half (middle to tip) the motion is coming from the elbow and then wrist. Really a good bow hold looks a lot like a relaxed "standard" pencil grip.

@@mikelafiddle Thank you. We will work on that. She did recently figure out that when she is rocking the bow on "Boil the Cabbage," it helps to lift the pinkie and let it sort of dangle while doing that fast rocking motion. It's probably because she relaxed a bit, as you say. I'll bet it will help on this one. We worked a bit on "Swallowtail Jig" tonight. She has all but the last few notes of the first part memorized. It will still be several weeks before it's presentable. Thank you so much for the response.

Yes. The Luthier. There was a Nottingham Luthier training School in UK . In 1980s . And I found one in Brittany too in 2007.

E on violin,A on viola &cello E on double bass.with bass bar glued under the lowest pitched string. G on violin C on viola and cello and E on double bass .so swapping syrings ariynd is a major reconstruction not forgetting bridge and fingerboard recrafting slopes to allow for lowest string clearance . internal

Totally! I had a student with a left handed instrument from her dad. I tried to just flip the strings and bridge so she could play right handed. It developed a horrible buzzing on the D string F#, a very essential note. So we brought the instrument to a luthier, and just like you said - they had previously moved the bass bar and sound post. A new bass bar and sound post in the right places had the fiddle sounding good as new.

Thanks for the video. After watching it three times I noticed you play on your right-side. Assuming that most of us play on the left-side, you are the first person I have seen doing this. I then wondered about string placement, but then I noticed that you reversed the strings. I am left handed and at a young age they tried to make me write with my right hand. And let this be a lesson for us. Thanks again.

Hi Chris - left hand dominant playing with switched strings is definitely a thing! However I'm a right handed bower, the video is just flipped 😂

All bowed stringed instruments evol ved externally and internally with highest pitched string adjacent to the bow arm.this facilitated ease of access to high positions

Super, I almost want to grab you and dance round and round.I lost,most of my Danish impulses, well I guess my grandfather didn't really ever teach me any songs on the violin. However he did hold and show me how to hold violin. He explained what part of Denmark he came from, but I have forgotten what he said. SO I NEVER REALLY HAD ANY SONGS FROM DENMARK DOWN PAT. EVERYHING I LEARNED ABOUT VIOLN WAS IN 4TH GRADE. MARY HAD A LITTLE LAMB,TWINKLE TWINKLE LITTLE STAR,ALLEGRO AND OTHERS.

French horn -the only left handed valved brass wind instrument.uk drive on the left. Apocryphal reason; custom became practice from horsemen approaching to pass head -on ,on a narrow path can pass right side to right side with swords or spears at the ready in the right hands in case they are adversaries .

Ah 😂 .so much for modern hi tech! For my MBus we used to write inverted melodies. I recently inverted the melody of procul harum whiter shade of pale To fit the melody . For fun. Was fun. 😊 when you slow it down to teach it .ever thought of getting a dancer to keep in step?
