I was just down in Fort Walton Beach / Destin area last week. I'm pretty sure I saw him cruising the shore a few times. Always a treat to see!

Could have been. There was an airshow in Biloxi MS last weekend. I grew up in FWB next to Eglin AFB. There were few dull moments having fighters fly around your home growing up as a kid!

Merlin or Packard, it really doesn't matter that much, because when it come to the sound of a P51 at, or near full throttle it is pure V12, magnificent music!

olspanner.....Yes it does matter !!! Too many generalizations, ALL Merlins used in ALL models of the Mustang were built by PACKARD in AMERICA, NO British built Merlin used in a production merlin Mustang !!!

That PACKARD built in AMERICA Merlin does sing its song !!!!!! FREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEDOM !!!! And he flew that Mustang like he stole it !!!!

British engineers did NOT pair up the Merlin in the Mustang !!! They had the Idea and they hashed up 4 test mules out of Mustang I's and about the same time North American at the request of the USAAF started working on the conversion and within just a few weeks of the Brits flying their hashed up mules, ie Mustang X North American turned out the finished product the XP51B using the PACKARD built and MODIFIED version of the Merlin !!!! get your $hit stories straight !!!

P-51s were not known for Combat Manuverability. They would simply fly higher than you and then swoop down on you out of the blue. If you wanted a combat manuver aircraft you should look to the Spitfire.

I've been to many airshows. I'm starting to find the non-stop yammering of the announcers distracting. I'd rather hear the sounds of the aircraft than their narration.

Absolutely correct. Great video of a beautiful aircraft with idiot announcers stepping all over the P-51’s mechanical music.

I thought the Howl was airflow through the oil cooler?

Well if you blow air over a water bottle or a soda can it’s basically the same concept.

It is !!!! Most fighters had guns sticking out that did not howl, but the Mustang had a unique radiator housing and it howled !!! Same as a F4u Corsair howled because of its oil coolers in the leading edge wing root !! !

No, the howl comes from the gun ports. Mustangs with a flush leading edge or P-51 B and C models with four guns doesn't howl. Easy to check here on YT.

Announcer was wrong !!!! Stating in 120 days this was the airplane that came out !!!! As a P51D flies by !!! NO it was not !!! The P51 A was what came out, different engine, an Allison V1710, the only V12 AVAILABLE in the USA at that time, and it had a different wing and a different fuselage, a green house cockpit as opposed to the Bubble canopy !!!! Get your info right !!! The P51 D was a development available in 1943 with the Packard Merlin, bubble canopy and new wing to hold 6 MG and an extra kick out at the root !!!
