Swanage to Wareham & Back - First train for 45 years

6 жыл бұрынJoin us for a drivers-eye view as we journey through the beautiful Purbeck countryside in real-time, and experience the best seat in the house on the journey from Swanage to Wareham and back.
The last British Rail train ran to Corfe Castle and Swanage in January 1972.
Shortly after, the line was closed and the tracks were ripped up, leaving only a three-mile stub from the main line to Furzebrook for clay and later Wytch Farm for oil.
Few people thought that passenger trains from Swanage and Corfe Castle would ever return to Wareham, but 45 years later the towns have been reconnected.
The first public train from Swanage to Wareham ran again on Tuesday 13th June 2017, departing at 10:23am. The service was top and tailed by Class 33 "Crompton" No. 33012 / D6515 "Lt Jenny Lewis RN" which hauled the service from Swanage to Wareham, and Class 37 No. 37518. which hauled the train back to Swanage.

Look at the sheer excitement and joy on the small child's face right as the end as he/she runs waving towards the approaching locomotive while a concerned Mum chases behind. That child will remember this day all its life; absolutely priceless.

It is obvious now in hindsight that Beeching was in the pockets of the road and car lobby. Our railways are priceless.

The worst thing wasn't Beeching but the way BR obliterated the railway then sold off the trackbed and stations making reinstatement extremely difficult.

My son is special needs and he is overjoyed whenever a railroad track is rebuilt and used again it is one of his dreams and hopes that real soon other lines in Britain 🇬🇧 and North America 🇺🇸🇨🇦 that were abandoned and/or removed are rebuilt and used again. But he does not want that to be wishful thinking he wants it to be a reality!

The corfe castle station with the castle in the background wow. You don't see many timeless vintage views like that absolutely stunning. Famous five kind of setting. Best railway video I've seen just a joy on this lockdown situation.

I remember as a boy my parents took us to Swanage on day trips I think at the time the tickets where called "Away Day" train trips and all these years on my wife and I still visit Swanage.

I remember getting a train pulled by an M7 from Corfe Castle to Swanage on a school trip from Hertfordshire in 1959. Since then I lived in Dorset and followed the line's fortunes closely.

WHAT a glorious trip on a reserected railway line and I was listening to John Hogan sing nostalgic songs about times gone by like the 50s to 70s with lyrics about people going away and perhaps never to return. It made the return trip to.. Many Congratulations to the people who restored the much loved trains. No wonder there are so so many Railroad songs ?.. Well done to everyone involved in salvaging long lost memories of one who was born in 1944 in the country environment in Ireland. We lived about 1 Km across the fields from our local Train Station.. I have relived my long lost Youth while enjoying the trip and back. WOW WOW. The idiot Government in Ireland ripped up all but 3 main lines here in the late 50s.. Shortsighted or what ?? At a time when very very few people owned cars, WHAT were they thinking ?? Most freight throughout the country came by Train..

In the 50,s(!) I used to attend a summer camp at Langton Matravers & we would take the Pines Express down the wonderful Hants & Dorset line to Wareham(wish more of this could be re-opened!) & then down to Swanage.The view of the castle from Corfe station is forever etched on my memory so great to see it again!

A big well done for everyone involved getting the line reopened. We need to see more of these rural lines being brought back. They were a hell of a lot more used than Beeching would have us believe.

My special needs son agrees with you on that completely! It is one of his dreams for railroad lines that were abandoned and/or removed to be rebuilt and used again both in Britain 🇬🇧 and in North America 🇺🇸🇨🇦! But he does not want that to be wishful thinking he wants it to be a reality!

Although I don't live in England, Swanage has a particular meaning for me in that a relative rests in a graveyard there. Captain John Purdy went down with his ship, Alexandrovna, during a storm in 1882 off nearby cliffs. If I visit one day, I'll hope to arrive by train. Thanks for the video, it's lovely.

Super to see a line reopening. A big WELL DONE to everyone who had a hand in bringing it back from oblivion. A real west country line evokes memories of childhood holidays when the journey was a big part of the adventure.

This is a really great sight to see, my parents took us to swanage on holiday many times, so it has always has been a special place for me. Well done to everyone concerned. (By the way that is my real name)

The last time I was in Swanage it ended at Nordon and the rest was 'wilderness'! Corfe station was derelict and just track bed! WELL DONE SR i shall return!! I reckon its time to invite SWANAGE,the beautiful Bulleid loco along and see what speed she can get get up to!

Bulleid pacific 34105 Swanage visited Swanage in March 1993 and the fastest it went and would ever go at is 25mph.

A magnificent achievement and a magnificent video to celebrate it! But I was astonished to realise you actually ran ON the main line from Worgret Junction into Wareham - I assumed the layout would be similar to Brockenhurst where the Lymington branch uses a parallel spur into the bay platform. Your driver must have nerves of steel to run "wrong road" on the Waterloo to Weymouth inter city line!

It's all properly signalled and controlled by Basingstoke on the mainline so there is no chance of a crash!. As the train gets near to the junction you will see a sign board and a signal which marks the start of the BR controlled section. There is an excellent video on the reconnection and resignalling work at worgret junction which I believe was done in 2013 as part of the BR resignalling program on the mainline. It was excellent timing that the heritage line approached BR at this time and had the connection reinstated. The video made me appreciate that it is not a trivial matter to connect a heritage line to the national rail network.

Well done to you all! We really enjoyed our visit recently, before this part was opened. Buffet coach for Lunch was outstanding and it was lovely to meet the staff and a member/enthusiast called Michael (?) especially. What a wonderful bit of film from a momentous event on a perfect English summer's day in one of the most picturesque parts of our Island! They used to show these rail journey videos with no commentary late at night on German television, but this knocks all those into a cocked hat! Many thanks and haven't you got a lot of engines to restore! :)

45 years, how time flies. I used to get at steam train from Bailey Gate Station to Poole and then cross the lines to get a train to Swanage back in the late 50's early 60's before the axe fell. Happy times, and I really pleased to see a train working through. I only wish it had been steam. :-) But well done everyone getting the line reconnected to the mainline again. The last time I travelled on the line it ran from Harmans Cross into Swanage and at one point I took photos of a train that ran a mile out into the countryside and returned, so this is a major achievement, you set out to do this all those years ago and you have succeeded, congratulations to everyone no matter what part you played, large or small, without you this wouldn't have happened.

BUT UNFORTUNATELY THIS SO CALLED SWANAGE WAREHAM REOPENNG WAS DISGUSTINGLY NOT PUBLICISED AND THERE WAS NO INFO WHATSOEVER ON THE NTERNET. IN THE USELESS UK PUBLICITY IS CRAP, USELESS AND ALMOST NON EXISTENT EVERYWHERE AND ALSO IN THE USELESS UK 75 % OR MORE OF PEOPLE I INCLDING ALL THE GOVERNMENT IN ENGLAND ARE SO INCOMPETENT AND NOT ABLE TO EVEN ARRANGE A BOOZE UP IN A BREWERY. SO WITHOUT ANY OFFICIAL INFO, I SUSPECT THIS SO CALLED REOPENING WITH DOUBT. I UNFORTNATELY LOST MY LOWER LEFT LEG MID FEB 2016, DUE TO MY FATHER BEING MAIMED ON A MINE SAVING A GUY IN 1939 - 45 WAR, SO HE TOOK OUT ON ME FOR WHAT THE GOVERNMENT VIA THE WAR DID TO HIM, BY MENTALLY AND PHYSICALLY ABUSING ME FROM BIRTH FOR 55 YEARS. SO I SUFFERED SEVERE HYPERTENSION WHICH GAVE ME A BAD BLOOD CLOT, LEAVING ME NO ALTERNATIVE BUT TO HAVE A RARE THROUGH THE KNEE AMPUTATION. Furszebrook/Motala site would be absolutely perfect for carriage sidings / maintenance depot. Perhaps even Herston works could relocate there (and hence finally gain an actual physical rail connection!). It would appear to be virtually perfect as a CSS / CHS / Depot / T&RSMD. Looks spacious *AND* secure

I believe there is a fundraiser going for a covered coach and engine storage but I am not sure of the location. It is very sad to see all that rolling stock rusting away. The landowners at Herston should be more sympathetic and permit the depot to be properly connected to the line, shame on them!

This works well played at double-speed. I'd imagine that branches like this were run at 40-50mph, so still plenty of time to watch the world go by. I'm told that I went on holiday on this line before it closed, (1960's?) but too young to remember at the time.

Are trains allowed to travel at main line speeds on the main line? There's foliage on main line cuttings, is this because there is no steam there?

Btw... It'd be great for see a 'Route Learning Video' for this route - along the lines of the excellent Southern videos of the BML or the also brilliant videos we used to get in the days of the Southern Region produced by David Dore and Spa Productions, they described the routes available for every signal, where each speed restriction started etc to start people on the train to learning the road.

I'm confused. Why does a wagon need 3 steering wheels at 30:10? Seriously, well done to all the enthusiasts involved.

A wagon or any rail vehicle come to that does not need any steering wheels, trains are not steered, the wheels follow and stay on the rails by the action of the wheel flanges. The wagon you are seeing is a ballast wagon and has three doors, one on each side and one in the middle. By turning the wheels it opens the doors at the side or the middle of the wagon to let the ballast fall out where it is needed. I hope that explains it for you.

As I understand it only third-party TOC operates trains to Wareham so is there any plans for Swanage Railway to maintain there own mainline stock and register as a TOC like the NYMR has done or is the plan to keep with third-party TOCs for this route?

Yes steam does run in the summer months, in fact it starts (usually) in the march. You get to it from London Waterloo and get off the train at Wareham and currently (July 2020) get a bus to Swanage or Norden park and ride if the bus calls there.

Surprised to see the signal was pulled off at Harmans before the token exchange? Is that normal or were you running only one in steam? Great work.

Two trains were running this day but this is normal practise to pull off the board before the exchange takes place especially if the train is a non stop working.

The buildings on the right are the former ball clay exchange shed where narrow gauge wagons unloaded into standard gauge wagons. Sadly all goes by road now.

Thomas, you are right about the N class but visiting mainline locos are NOT stored there as there are no facilities for working locos. Whilst the siding is not used anymore, the shed most certainly is for ball clay use. When mainline locos visit they are stabled at Swanage where all the facilities are located and the public can see them.

If the line closein 1972, how were stations opened in 1992? Is that another former railway crossing at Norden?

The preservationists first gained access to Swanage station on 14th Feb 1976 (I was there) and started the long process of restoring the line with the ultimate aim of reaching Wareham and this train was it (I was on this train). As time went on the new stations at Herston and Harmans Cross were built and Corfe Castle station was restored and Norden station built. The road crossing at Norden is a new built, it was never there in BR days.

Blame USA The ramps are over the Signal Pull-Wires, which pass under the rails here. They essentially prevent people from tripping over the wires.

Not possible sadly. The maximum speed is laid down by the terms of the Light Railway Order and is strictly governed at 25mph.

@@timon3211 That would NOT happen, the terms of the Light Railway Order are very specific and not open to variance. The maximum speed for passenger carrying trains is and always will be 25mph.

Zero although on the Great Central railway they mainly have double track and they also have sections of continuously welded track both of which is rather rare for heritage lines and they're permitted to run test trains up to 75mph, service trains are still very much limited to 25mph

Well as the platform was clear for this train my guess would be the interlocking may not allow that signal to be cleared until the other train had stopped in case either train overran the stop signal protecting the points.

Zac Daunt-Jones By BR rules opposing moves (in different directions) can’t be signalled towards each other. The signals will be interlocked to prevent this.

@@tgm9991 You are correct Tim. This is because Trap points are not installed. The first train to be signalled in must come to a stand before the train in the opposite direction can be signalled in. Both the Home signals cannot be cleared at the same time as they are interlocked with each other for opposing movements. The Home signal is released by occupation of the Berth track circuit or treadle if the points at the other end in advance of the Starting signal are set for the opposite direction. If those points are set for our train then the Home signal can be cleared as normal. If Trap points or a connection to a siding are provided then both Home signals can be cleared together, as the siding or Trap points will provide protection for opposing movements. On the outward journey, we are held at the Home signal whilst the Down train arrives in the platform first. On the return journey, we arrive in the platform first whilst the other train has to wait at the Up Home signal like we did.

Dr Beeching was a mere pawn - the real rogue was the Tory Minister of Transport, Ernest Marples (who told Beeching what to do) - he of the Marples famliy firm Marples Ridgeway, heavily involved in Road Construction. Usual self-serving Tory politician, bugger the general public.

Actually Beeching came up with the whole plan in 1959, to get himself on the advisory board of BR. The incorporation of Marples Construction Company was a sweetener for Marples, so Beeching would then get the Chairman job in 1961. Beeching was the mastermind, with some unknown vendetta against the railways and a even bigger drive for career advancement. Marples just got sold on that exchange, seeing pound signs for his family business.

Didn't Dr. Beeching want the line from Wareham to Swanage to be kept open? It was never listed for closure in his 1963 Report entitled "The Reshaping of British Railways."

I just hope it can remain a heritage line...But if it does well whats the betting a big rail company will compulsory buy it, tear down the old signal boxes and buildings...install LED signals and station signs...rip up the semaphore signals, computerise the running. and rid the whole line of staff....( All health and safety of course, the will say )If they cant they will block access to the main line, that's for sure, just to stop free running...and then bribe the council and network rail into making a bylaw prohibiting the burning of coal and diesel ... Sadly that's how it works now days...If you cant have it, make sure no body else can either.

allan xxx Whoa... That got dark really quickly. I don't think that will happen here. Network Rail, for all their faults, have been really really supportive of the project, the LDC and the County Council, the regional train operating company and the DfT have all given the project their respective blessings and support. But, you never know.

That would never happen, swanage arnt that stupid, they put their railway before money believe me. They can make more money probably from running a daily service of a diesel or steam from swanage to wareham then being bought out

If Swanage railway is leased from network rail like some heritage railways are and the lease runs out and it's not renewed bare in mind these leases are likely to be very long then I guess it could return to the mainline network but I don't see that happening. Although I've never heard of something like that happening and the only heritage railway I know that regularly operates on NR metal is the NYMR which possibly runs more trains to Whitby per year than the mainline TOC does and honestly if anything I can see it being more likely NR give up that line to the NYMR than the other way around still extremely unlikely though.
