Tiny Huge Island is normally a pretty standard level in Super Mario 64... But something we did broke it. We're not entirely sure why this happens since it doesn't appear to be a normal overloading issue that we've dealt with before. It's quite creepy too... Definitely giving us some Mario creepypasta / Slenderman vibes. Join us on a game breaking hunt on this cursed Mario island as we search for all the weird things it contains!

Its a deloading/loading (pre-load failure) from what it looks like. It seems to be trying to load both versions of the stage at once.

I think.. that’s probably why the textures are going away so it can load more things and it probably happens at certain times because of the rendering of objects and such

So The game has like main objects and textures it will unload first if theres to much. You need a ton of duouble loads so the game unloads even textures form mountains and stuff. I think it maybe loads all versions of Tiny huge island double so it loads 6 times tiny huge island because it has to change the objects to coins in all versions + the pre load failure

I could be wrong but I think enemies load and deload depending on the position and pov of mario, while coins are spawned in and never deload, which would in turn require more memory to be accessed. This paired with the fact that there are technically three levels in tiny huge island could cause an overload.

@@Xenova_ Definitely true! If you look into the sky where the rings of coins are in that level, they appear and disappear depending on the perspective, but the red coins that are in the same area always remain.

Three levels? I'm only aware of two. Also I'm pretty sure only the objects for the current level are ever loaded at any given time, otherwise THI would be at constant risk of running over the object limit. Single coins do stay loaded regardless of distance, this is true. But this looks like more than just an object limit getting hit.

well i know nothing bout this kinda stuff, but maybe the reason why things are acting up with the level is cause it's like 2 different levels that you can change at any time. and alternating anything or replacing anything can cause some weird issues

@@primeoctober For me, it was the AR part of BEN Drowned. The man made a whole website about cults based around this thing, kept making videos pointing people how to release the main guy's spirit from BEN, etc. And it got huge with a lot of tributes, too, with some of my favourite videos being fan videos that took BEN drowned a step further and almost gave it their own lore. I've never really seen a singular creepypasta get that much attention from fans and from the original creator.

lets try and make one all togetha, okay, i go first *And no, there's no dead children, or whatever. Anyways, to the story.* *It was a nice sunday morning, and I decided to hook up my N64. I wanted to play M64, so, well..I did. I got to Tiny Huge Island, and a message popped up reading: "Are you sure?" I pressed yes and thought to myself: "Cliche." There was no sound or music. To be honest, I thought that I forgot to turn the volume up. I continued to the level, and had to use the bathroom. When I pressed PAUSE, there was no pause menu or anything. Just a shot of the mountain. I got back to the game and the screen flashed black for a few moments.* now u continue it or i'll have to

I think that maybe the problem has to do with the base rom. Some versions of the Super Mario 64 rom can be very glitchy on Tiny Huge Island and sometimes give similar results. If you’re using Project 64, if you adjust the graphics settings to the lowest, play the level and then set the graphics back it might fix it for a while. The graphical glitches are easy to fix but can be a bit finicky to make work within the rom.

SwankyZone I believe so. It’s only that stage that does it though and that’s why it’s so confusing to fix. I’ve been trying to figure it out myself but so far I haven’t found any fix. If you have any other questions go ahead and ask and I’ll try to answer as best I can.

Is it possible that one of the things turned into a coin is a game logic object? Like I don't know if the warp pipes are effected by the coin thing, but maybe there is a special function in the map that causes it to overload as the game's error handler is trying to locate the missing object thus causes the odd corruption. Like you said, its the only stage that has two separate regions, I take it what happens is that the game has (Big) Tiny-Huge Island in storage when you jump into (Small) Tiny-Huge and its possible there is a broken connection there. Another odd detail is why does the water vanish, like the texture is missing and the sound doesn't load? To me, that implies that level isn't loading properly at all and well, that might be due to something in the game logic being edited when it shouldn't be. Edit: Just saw the part where they jump to (Big) Tiny-Huge Island, the game slows down and everything goes wack. That looks like something not deloading/loadign properly (pre-load failure).

Cura In my opinion I think that it’s caused because it loads both maps (not confirmed) at the same time and that overloads the game. This happens in normal roms too though and as far as I know it could be as simple as that. When both maps are loaded at the same time, other things in memory have to be sacrificed in order to keep the game running at a constant rate. This happens in other games too, but I’ve never seen it get this bad before. Also, your question about the water texture is that the texture itself is considered an object, and the purpose of the object is to play the water noises when Mario enters the water.

THIS IS MY ASSUMPTION I think this error is coming from how the game generates enemies for this level. The devs probably just used a scaler value to adjust the size of objects for this level. It may have been intended to have large or small coins as well but they may have ran into an issue of the system not being able to keep the frame rate to a playable level so they removed it from the coins. Coins move pretty fast in terms of their rotation speed and too many at one time being computationally resized and rotating at the same speed may have been too much for the system to process. They way the coins are rendered may be the same as how racers are rendered in Mario Kart 64. They are layered 2D objects that change rapidly to represent a 3 dimension object. As a result, I assume, they left the coins at the same settings since draw and redraw times of a large coin would be taxing and the draw, redraw time may try to pull data at the wrong time. When the mod was created the modder probably just changed the enemy code to that of a coin. When the system then tries to run this level it causes the errors your seeing from the system running out of memory or memory values getting over written My Guess

Could be too many coins. Also possible that some object which is either scripted or related to how the game loads between tiny and huge level is now a coin and no longer functioning. Would like to see Pannen explain this.

Seems to have something to do with how much of the level you can see - noticed how things got more screwed up the higher up the mountain you went, and how the small version of the island is so incredibly unstable? Almost like the game just can't handle loading in much of it

when you turn the things into coins they are still there but they go inside the corrupted box and all at the same time reload at a pace and when the game runs slower it is because they are reloading a a faster pace so when the pause scree n goes black it is because the rate at witch the game is loading is so slow that it cant always load the screen and it then goes to the normal screen (when play screen goes black) when you hit the box it relesed all the things and in the spot that they are there is a coin when the coin and the "thing" spawn at the same time and place you get an unused idem a coin with the thing on it when you hit the coin it spawns the "thing" well it is spawning those an if you already collected a coin it spawns the boss or "thing" as well as trying to spawn the star it chirrups the game and then fixes itself so fast that it causes the game to crash in the chirruped state. With some glitches.

In Mario 64 DS there are some hardcoded stuff. If you alter certain levels with some hardcoded stuff... BOOM! Such as the Goomboss boss battle. I have hacked SM64DS before so I know. It might be the case here as well. Tiny-Huge Island is one of the most complicated courses in the game. The most being that the star Make Wiggler Squirm. There might be an objectGroundPounded check hardcoded in the course ITSELF. So now that it is turned into a coin, the game tries to find the object but instead gets other objects like coins. The course possibly glitches out progressively because collecting coins unloads them, which shuffles object slots, possibly causing a recheck of the object that controls water level in THI causing game to progressively glitch out already existing objects such as Mario's face by writing unncessary code at certain addresses. This is just a theory, it also makes sense that the ! Block gets corrupted since its the nearest object to the place where the game checks whether you ground pounded the entrance to Wiggler. (Again its just a theory according to my understanding of the game.)

I agree with some comments here: this level has two parts, and I'm pretty sure the way they're usually loaded is broken because it's coins this time. I'm guessing the level, on a normal day, load one map or the other depending on what side you are, but both maps are there. Keeping this in mind, the game knows what to load and unload everytime. However, because everything was turned to coins, the game didn't know what to do with them, so it loaded all of them at the same time on both island, taking more memory to do so.

I propose even though I'm not a master of coding I think the removal of data for enemies and replacement being coins created a data underflow for bli that caused the rbg values to depend on the camera's position and a texture wrap underflow

I had the same problem when I used an action replay on the Nintendo DS version of Super Mario 64 however it just flat-out crashes it doesn't really show anything but the weird thing is it only happens to Tiny huge island

I feel like the amount of spawned coins is overloading causing it to slowly remove files from the game making stuff like that happen. The reason it is a lot worse in the small island is because there is less map space for the game to corrupt

Or maybe everything's in the draw distance while in the small island? If you're in the big area things can unload

I don't think it removes files and Osmium, I don't think that's the case because objects can have theoratically have a small radius

I think this happens because Tiny-Huge Island is such a complex level (in program) with the switching between tiny and huge. I also guess that Huge Island is the original version of the level and the programmers just shrunk it in some way to create Tiny Island.

Maybe its because the map normally has like 190 coins or something but because you replaced everything with a coin there are now over 200 coins and it cant handle that or something?

Maybe the game overloads because the course already has 192 coins in total and if we add up the coins, that we're getting from all the objects, then we're exceeding 255 coins and this amount may be too much for the game to handle.

But you have to remember that coin cloning exists and that it is completely possible (even if it doesn't work as intended) to get 999 coins in a level. If you mean 255 REGULAR coins PRESENT in a level, tough, then who knows, maybe? It just doesn't seem to make sense that it would crash the game, but idk.

This theory is wrong because all the blue coin goombas are taken into consideration in THI Coin Count so it cannot exceed 255, theoratically even if it did, there are enough object slots to fit it in (correct me if I am wrong), how would we able to get 999 coins if this is not correct?

Jerry ジェリー the 255 coin limit is for the coins you collect, and even then you can never crash the game from the amount of coins you collect.

This might be possible since this is the biggest level in the game and has 3 (maybe 4) sections in this level: The huge island, the small island, the wiggler fight mixed with red coins. it would only be 4 if you separated the red coin and the wiggler fight, but its actually 3 in total. the huge island takes a lot of storage, so this level all together has reached the max of power this level may hold.

I have a feeling that this is some sort of rare glitch that happens when loading one of the painting worlds in Super Mario 64. Basically, if you hack too many collectable items (coins, etcetera) in Super Mario 64, certain levels such as Tiny/Huge Island will glitch out, resulting in what looks like a demonic possession of Super Mario 64. I hope this explanation helps. However, I am not fully certain about this. It is the best explanation I could come up with, but I haven't experienced anything like that.

Skeleton Masta Lord of Old Memes. So basically what @battle plays is trying to say is that THI is like two levels in the way that there is the tiny version and the huge version, but are still all considered one level in the game’s memory.

My guess is that the coins are always loaded, so despite there being less objects, there are more stored in memory.

I think the reason for the graphical glitches is the fact that tiny huge island has the most coins in the game located on it. Each coin is given a variable which adds to your coin count as you collect it, but by adding more coins you have given the game more things to keep track of. And to limit the stress, the game cuts out the least important aspect of the game, the graphics, in hopes of not crashing. That’s my theory at least from my very limited knowledge of coding lol. Donno if it’s right.

Well one of the problems with that theory, and what we should have clarified in the video, is that even reverting the game back to its original form (before making any edits) still has a corrupted island. The raw game that was used was copied prior to editing took place, and so this exists even if the coin change happens or not.

I think the size-switching depends on a special load-manager. but as everything is now a coin everything gets loaded at once, instead of only when the size in question is active.

And no, there's no dead children, or whatever. Anyways, to the story. It was a nice sunday morning, and I decided to hook up my N64. I wanted to play M64, so, well..I did. I got to Tiny Huge Island, and a message popped up reading: "Are you sure?" I pressed yes and thought to myself: "Cliche." There was no sound or music. To be honest, I thought that I forgot to turn the volume up. I continued to the level, and had to use the bathroom. When I pressed PAUSE, there was no pause menu or anything. Just a shot of the mountain. I got back to the game and the screen flashed black for a few moments. now u continue it or i'll have to, but ya know its gonna cost a few likes

Basically the textures start unloading. Might be that the animation cache from all the coins at the same time take up too much of the cache so things start unloading but that would be pretty weird. A better theory would be that the trigger that's supposed to unload the other island also got turned into a coin when changing stuff didn't unload correctly and it again filled up the cache. (like Mario's textures. The colors that remain aren't textures but instead are solid color polygons.)

They probably have some kind of scaling effect applied to the objects replaced by coins and because they are now coins it has has a hard time processing what to do with them.

Perhaps the problem is in the code machanic that causes the mobs to change size. As they load in it might be trying to run a code or script that adjust their AI behaviur to suite the new sizes and terrain - valid since we know each episode uses the exact same map with objects swapped out or swapped in. but since the objects are missing you're triggering a stack overflow where the call routines are just stacking on top each other and not finalizing until it runs low on resources.
