3 elegant and graceful species of swans are found in India
00:15 Mute Swan
A rare Indian visitor found in the North West of India. They are named 'mute' as they are less vocal than other swans. They are recognizable by the pronounced knob above their beak. Males are larger than females and have a larger knob on their bill. During a courtship display, they utter a rhythmic song which synchronizes movements of their heads and necks. They can be very aggressive in defense of their nests and are highly protective of their mate and offspring. They are one of the heaviest flying birds; and second largest waterfowl species after the Trumpeter Swan.
01:22 Tundra Swan
A smaller swan compared to Mute and Whooper Swans; they breed in the Arctic and Subarctic Tundra regions and are a rare winter visitors to India. They can be found in Haryana, Gujarat and parts of North and North West India. Their plumage is entirely white, with black feet and a mostly black bill. They make high-pitched honking calls and sounds similar to that of a Black Goose.
02:20 Whooper Swan
Also known as the common swan is a rare migrant to India and are especially found in Himachal Pradesh and Northern most parts of India. They have a more angular head shape and a more variable bill pattern showing more yellow than black. They pair for life, and their cygnets stay with them all winter. Both male and female help build the nest; male will stand guard over the nest while the female incubates. They have a deep honking call; and despite their size, are powerful fliers. They use a variety of signals to communicate with each other, such as head bobs, head shakes, and wing flaps.
