Eyes Right: Awakening Bharatmata: Swapan Dasgupta, Saba Naqvi, Makarand R. Paranjape and Pragya Tiwari
Swapan Dasgupta is a Member of Parliament and columnist for major Indian newspapers. A journalist for 30 years, he occupied senior editorial positions at the Times of India, Indian Express and India Today. He writes regular columns for Times of India, Telegraph and Pioneer, and is a commentator on TV networks. He is the author of Awakening Bharat Mata: The Political Beliefs of the Indian Right. In 2015, he was awarded the Padma Bhushan and was nominated to the Rajya Sabha.
Saba Naqvi is one of India's best-known journalists. The former political editor of Outlook magazine, she now writes columns in leading Indian dailies including the Times of India,The Tribune and several websites. She is also a well-known election analyst and political commentator. She is currently visiting professor at the Jindal School of Journalism. She has published four books: In Good Faith, Capital Conquest, Shades of Saffron:From Vajpayee to Modi and her latest The Coalition Handbook. She is currently working on her next book on India’s backsliding democracy.
Makarand R. Paranjape is currently Director at the Indian Institute of Advanced Study, Shimla. He has been Professor of English at Jawaharlal Nehru University for over 20 of his 39 years as a university teacher. He is the author of some 20 and editor of over two-dozen books, in addition to hundreds of academic papers and popular articles. His latest books include Swami Vivekananda: Hinduism and India’s Road to Modernity, New Perspectives in Indian Science and Civilisation, Debating the 'Post' Condition in India and The Death and Afterlife of Mahatma Gandhi. Paranjape is currently a columnist for Open Magazine, Mail Today and The Print.
Pragya Tiwari is a journalist who has written extensively on politics, identity, policy, and culture and edited publications such as Tehelka, The Big Indian Picture and Vice. She currently works as a policy and culture consultant.
Swapan Dasgupta’s recent book Awakening Bharat Mata: The Political Beliefs of the Indian Right draws on a variety of sources to trace the evolution of right-wing thought in India. Citing a spectrum of thinkers and writers, it identifies the significant threads that constitute an ideology that has increasingly gained traction and dominated vote banks across the nation. A spirited conversation that discusses and debates the history and influences that forged the vortex of Hindu nationalism with Dasgupta alongside writers and journalists Hitesh Shankar, Makarand R. Paranjape, Saba Naqvi in conversation with Pragya Tiwari.

Described as the 'greatest literary show on Earth', the Jaipur Literature Festival is a sumptuous feast of ideas.
The past decade has seen it transform into a global literary phenomenon having hosted nearly 2000 speakers and welcoming over a million book lovers from across India and the globe. Our core values remain unchanged: to serve as a democratic, non-aligned platform offering free and fair access.
Every year, the Festival brings together a diverse mix of the world's greatest writers, thinkers, humanitarians, politicians, business leaders, sports people and entertainers on one stage to champion the freedom to express and engage in thoughtful debate and dialogue.
Festival Co Directors Namita Gokhale and William Dalrymple, alongside Producer Sanjoy K Roy and Teamwork Arts, create a platform for an array of speakers to debate, discuss and present their ideas in the annual five-day programme set against the backdrop of Rajasthan's stunning cultural heritage and the Diggi Palace in the state capital Jaipur.
Past speakers have ranged from Nobel Laureates His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, J.M. Coetzee, Muhammad Yunus and Orhan Pamuk, Man Booker Prize winners Ben Okri, Howard Jacobson and Yan Martel, Pulitzer Prize winners Andrew Sean Greer, and Jhumpa Lahiri, Sahitya Akademi winners Gulzar, Javed Akhtar, M.T. Vasudevan Nair as well as the late Girish Karnad, Mahasweta Devi and U.R. Ananthamurthy along with literary luminaries including Amish Tripathi, Chima¬manda Ngozi Adichie, Vikram Chandra and Vikram Seth. An annual event that goes beyond literature, the Festival has also hosted Amartya Sen, Amitabh Bachchan, the late A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, Oprah Winfrey, Stephen Fry, Thomas Piketty and former president of Afghanistan, Hamid Karzai.
The Jaipur Literature Festival is a flagship event of Teamwork Arts, which produces over 33 highly acclaimed performing arts, visual arts and literary festivals across more than 40 cities globally.
