Tried this yesterday and I want to say THANK YOU for making such a clear and detailed video! My hair looked so much better then it usually does using this method. I’m only 4 months into my curly journey and still trying to get the hang of everything, so I was stunned when your method worked on my first try. I highlighted my hair blonde and have about 4-5 inches of roots. Up until now I was of the opinion that damaging my hair made it easier to maintain, both when I wear it curly and straight. This method not only gave those roots texture, something that has never happened before in my journey, but the roots looked so much better then the bleached ends due to actually being healthy. This has totally changed my perspective on my hair! Thank you! I’m not sure I’ll give up color completely, but I figure I can grow most/all of the bleach out and go from there. The only issue I’ve run into is that a couple of my curl clumps are exactly where I part my hair, so I gotta either figure out how to style that effectively or change my part. Nothing to do with your method, just one of those annoying things. 🤣

I just revisited this technique after having a session with Courtney. It's so good. A skill I'm going to work on mastering. I was struggling with getting any definition at my roots and taking forever to brush curl and for the first time have curls to the rood. Also realized after a year of going curly that I have not been using anywhere enough product. And that I've been brush curling some of my curls the wrong direction. Don't be afraid to experiment and take notes on what words and does not. And remember to embrace the frizz, it's just a curl waiting to happen.

Omg I've been unknowingly using a version of this method for a while now! The only difference is that I wash right side up and then swing and shake (like a dog 😂) to align my clumps. It's the easiest and quickest way to do my hair, nothing else works!! I've got super fine, delicate, low density hair and brush styling leads to so much hair fall! Will definitely be trying your version today 🙂

I can't do lots of head swinging because I have an occipital through C5 fusion thanks to childhood rheumatoid arthritis. But I just want to say that I do most of your method, and you were the one I first found when I started embracing my wavy hair in 2020, and you are the one that I've stuck with. There are a number of reasons for this colon you are a delightful personality;you understand and explain clearly the science behind all of the hair stuff, whether hair products or how our hair follicles grow or whatever; You share just enough of your personal life to make you human and to be helpful to others while still protecting the privacy of your family; and you are also dealing with RA, which I have battled for all but 8 years of my life. Honestly, I can't imagine a better person to go to when I want to learn wavy curly hair stuff, and I've tried lots of other people and I don't want to disc them at all. You are just by far the most helpful for me. I just wish I could be helpful in return for you with your RA journey. But I believe that you, with your strong faith (which I wish I had had growing up with RA as a child) And your knowledge of science and your patience will all get you through this really well. Plus, there are so many better medications now available to treat the illness. I wish you all the best all for you and for your family. Thank you so, so much!

UPDATE: tried this method TWICE now. WOW! I have 2c, but mostly 3a curls so I don't have to cajole a whole lot for spirals. That said, I've tried this method TWICE now and wowsers if my curls could talk they'd be like "YES MOMMA!" I am trying various products on this method now since my first attempt is a gel that works great but has terrible hold on day 2-3. That said, even my put-up hair had the cutest curls on the edges (I clip and flip and let the curls flop around.) Have some issues with getting my hair to lay down again when soaking wet post product and Perfect Hair towel (while I get dressed)... but a light comb gets things unclumped a little. Still practicing but feels more idiot-proof for sure!

Not ridiculous at all!! I have not straightened my hair for three years, but I have always finger curled the front of my hair. Then I had to go in and (gasp!) curl those sections the next day with a curling iron. Since trying your method, I have learned that the front of my hair actually curls the OTHER WAY! and now I have ringlets in the front that are still there on day two! So thank you!

Okay, I know this is an older video but I just did this method for the first time today and all I have to say is WOW!!! It really works! I’m new to my curly hair journey, and I was struggling to get my 2A/2B hair to hold curls and to get root volume which is a must for me. This gave me the biggest curls I have ever gotten since I started my journey and as I was diffusing I made sure I kept moving all my hair from side to side to get the roots to dry while they were flipped up to the other side then I just repeat by slowly flipping my hair to the other side and diffusing till my hair was mostly dry. This SCC method helps keep the roots from sticking to my head which prevents me from getting volume. After I SOTC I still had amazing curls and volume! Thanks for this!!! It’s exactly what was missing in my routine!🙌🏻❤️

I found your channel today and followed another video you made, in it you were not twirling your head, but still I got curls!! I’m so excited and I wanted to thank you for that. Next time I’ll try twirling my head. And please do spread your method around. I used to try to get my hair to make curls but would end up with stringy curls that didn’t look good at all. Ok I did your method last night and I just had the best wavy hair day I've ever had! I'm a year and a half into my wavy hair journey and I was getting discouraged because I couldn't get my clumps dry without them messing up. But this broke up the big clumps and made them a size that will actually stay together and the shining and scrunching got enough water out that it'll actually dry! (My husband also go me a shark diffuser for Mothers day so that helped too!) Thank you for doing this video and naming your technique, it's going to help so many people!

Even if I didn't have herniated disks in my neck, my large, crazy, swirl shaped cowlick at the back of my head plus stubborn growth patterns towards the front half of my head cannot be styled upside down. I have tried every single trick in the book, multiple times. Even my curly hair stylist I go to (who is amazing!) Couldn't really get it to work. She had initially done it by only flipping the hair up until the cowlick, but due to the growth patterns which goes down each side of my head, it wouldn't cooperate. She still managed to do it, but we had to do a LOT of re arranging of clumps that had to be re-brushed in tiny sections, & once you did it to one, it caused a chain reaction. Because I have bones lol, it's not something I could ever do on my own, because I wouldn't be able to reach or see. I've tried. She said this just happens sometimes

I tend to do better reading to understand than listening to someone present. Does this seem correct? 1) Rake leave-in conditioner through your hair. With your head tilted forward and brush head towards your face, brush your hair off your scalp and the sides of your face. You are trying to 1) start organizing your curl clumps 2) pull your hair away from your face and scalp and 3) provide multiple options for where your hair might part when your head is upright. If you feel like the hair at you crown is "glommed on" to your scalp, finger comb this hair to lift it away from the scalp. 2) Add water to your hair and gently pulse the hair. You are NOT trying to squeeze water out of your hair. Rather, this step will help distribute product and encourage curl clumps to form. 3) Leaning backwards (with you hair trailing down your back) swing your head around the side to tip your head upside down. As your head comes to the bottom of this arc, continue the motion by looking towards the direction you tilted at the beginning of the movement (if you swung your upper body with the movement starting towards the left, turn your head towards your left; if you started the motion by tilting to the right, turn your head to the right). Alternate sides several times. This swinging motion is the "Swing Curl Clump" (SCC). 4) Add curl souffle/gel/hold product of your choice by glazing it over your hair and roping it in. AVOID RAKING THE PRODUCT IN AT THIS POINT, as it will break up curl clumps. Then repeat the SCC motion multiple times, remembering to alternate sides. If you choose, you can repeat this process with a second (or even third) hold product. If you are struggling to get curl clumps to form, add more water. The addition of water is more likely to help curl clumps form than will adding addition product. 5) Plop/micro plop your hair as per your normal routine, then diffuse when a sufficient amount of water has been absorbed from your hair.

This really helped me. I've been watching your channel awhile and thought I had tried your method and that it didn't work for me. I was definitely not doing the swing correctly and I have had much better results the last two times I have tried. Whenever styling upside down before I'd end up with a tangled mess at the back of my head, but this solved that problem completely! My only struggle now is trying to find a good place to part once it's dry - I don't really get a straight one that goes all the way back so it looks a bit weird to me, but I did get incredible volume in my roots so I don't mind too much!

Also wanted to say that I finally tried styling over the tub and found that it was much easier to get the correct amount of water in my hair. For some reason it seemed much easier than in the shower!

This is fun to watch! I’m REAL new(like 8 months) to learning my hair is wavy curly after 30+ years of thinking I had BOARD STRAIGHT hair. But also….my hair is(layered and healthy…but also…) almost waste length. And the whipping gives me legit fear of my hair tangling because of my length. Is that irrational?
@mandiwolfe6631
@mandiwolfe6631 2 жыл бұрын
My curls are tailbone length now. The fear of tangling is real! I have to style upside down because I can't reach the full length when upright. I don't "swing & fling" like Courtney does in this video because my long hair gets caught on itself and tangles something fierce. Instead, I dip my head further down and gently toss my curls to the opposite side and sometimes have to help them over with my hands, if that makes sense. Might want to try that out?

This is great!❤️ I've been doing a much gentler version of this (the swing motion would be a bit too much for my particular combo of medical ailments) for a while now, and it's worked great for me! Mostly, I 've just realized how important it is for me, personally, to move my head around as much as I can while I'm scrunching in stylers.

Thanks Courtney for show use your method. I feel inspired to go and have a washday now😂. It might help me to feel back to normal again after having to isolate due to covid (I have a house where three of the five of us have come down with it for the first time and we're all needing washdays😂)

Trying this tomorrow! I feel like it incorporates all the things I have tried and that worked for me so far - very similar to bowl method with amounts of water and the pulling hair away from scalp method, and I like the brushes for distributing product and reducing frizz, but have discovered that my curl ‘clumps’ are fairly small no matter what, and that’s ok cause that’s just my hair and they still look good. My main focus every washday is reducing frizz! Thx!

Super helpful!! Seeing the actual swing makes sense. I think I did some of this before (moving hair side to side), but doing the back swing should definitely help. I'll have to let you know when I do it! 😁

Just wanted to congratulate you on giving your technique a name & thank you for showing us how it's done. I think it's great. The standing up part, it's great to give the back a break. I've done it twice & I think the 2nd time came out really good. I just figured out that I needed a little more than a tsp of gel for my high porosity hair, so I had to do some smasters. The 1st attempt, I realized that, I had too much custard & not enough water. So, it is knowing how much my hair needs. I've also started pre-pooing using oil, like you suggested in your latest video, which I think helps, too.

@@SwavyCurlyCourtney Oh, the most exciting thing is, my baby hairs on the top front of my head, which is white, & is about 2 inches long now, is already showing it's wave pattern! I'm 56 years young & am finally enjoying the hair God has given me for the 1st time. I can't remember how long it's been since I had let my hair grow to this length, which is almost down to the middle of my back. TY, TY, TY! Courtney! You are a Godsend! May our Lord Jesus Christ continue to bless you & your family.

This method absolutely changed the wavy girl game for me and I don't usually leave comments but I came back to directly say thanks! My long blond most waves are suddenly long spiral curls. I already personally observed some of what you said working for me, it's awesome to see it combined with more things like brushing it off the top of the crown (not sure if it's this video) but i loved it so much it lasted the night, dry ploped in a satin scarf, and the same curls and waves were there no refresh! I didn't want to fluff it bc for the first time I have definition and much less frizz and I was curious is how I could add body and taking up the spirals without breaking them up. I'm low on funds and still cannot find a curl mousse or a gel that doesn't make my strands stringy and dry. Any suggestions? [Sidebar I knew you must be from the south the minute I heard you pronounce "RE-fresh" 😅 South Louisiana sister here just chillin' at sea level actually loving the humidity! I'm hooked, girl! Please post more about humidity and how we can make it work for us!] Much to say here but I'd love to see so much more. My hair type is like yours but it is damaged from natural highlights from the Sun and touch ups in the winter (you could tell how many years have been the I had a haircut by counting the lines of highlight in my hair like the rings of a tree), and I thought it was just horizontal crimpy waves when I started the cgm. Or I see you speaking as if you would relate to my explanation to others that my hair isn't curly or straight. It just kinda does *blows raspberry." You have proved me wrong for sure! My mother has kinky curly curls and shamed me for my waves and abused my hair with heat styling for dance recital and weekly wash day and blowbout straight, sun-in, bang perms, perming it straight but telling me they messed up because I asked for a curly perm, and blow dry to heat soft curls for my communion pictures. It goes in but she just didn't accept herself. Now I'm conditioning to decondition all that and take back my power! Mom used to slowly brush my hair, look at me in the eye from behind me in the mirror, and dramatically drop her voice and say "people would kill for your hair," when I tell you I slept with one eye open and it was my lazy eye for a matter of months because little does she know we were learning about native Americans and scalping in school and I was convinced a someone was going to climb up into my bedroom and take my hair!😅 I digress :-) I love your vibe I love your energy and I hope to see more. I have not watched your videos yet on rheumatoid arthritis but I am dealing with chronic pain from a fall dancing in New York City that is disabled me for a few years now (praying for a change soon so I can get out again and show off all the things I learned from you to prepare my hair. I am enjoying learning to exercise new hair habits well I am unable to dance or jog. Thanks for enhancing a life 😊 I would love to send you photos my hair progress because I don't have the energy to start a page but I most certainly would be friends with you! And the picture before versus the ones after I did your swim at it or just baffling. Thanks again girl! I also have the same hairline as you and the tail of my brow is thinner too. I would also learn about that and how we can embrace them or improve them naturally, making them rock for us like you do. Girl you are beautiful and informative! Many many thanks! 😊

I don’t think it’s ridiculous at all! I completely agree with you that this is a great alternative to using a brush to clump curls. I personally don’t like the way forced curl families look on my head. My curls have a beautiful natural, wild pattern. I love to embrace it. Thank you for nailing down this technique. I’m going to try a few things you do that I haven’t added yet! Thank you!

Question for anyone else who's had severe damage due to years of arthritis: how do you squish to condish and scrunch product into your hair? My hands look like a gnarled witch's (I say that with complete love for my hands), with fingers fused in a way that makes it impossible for me to make a real fist. I've found the only way I can begin to squish or scrunch is to use one hand over the top of the other to try to get extra force. Works to some extent. But using both hands this way, and due to shoulder limitations, I can't really get the sides of my head, so everything gets clumped in front. Will see if I can do a bit of swinging, but my real issue is trying to get more effective and evenly spaced squishing and scrunching. Thanks!!

(Like you with your RA, I have Axial PsA- my spine never doesn't hurt!) You make it look so easy! Juicy clumps like that is hair goals, for sure. I'm gonna see if I can make this work.
