I just love so see vids of people coming to Sweden and see what they know about Sweden before they came just gets shot down. There is sooo much talk about Sweden that is not even close to the truth. Like the word Viking, there is no word Viking that the "Vikings" used. Closest you can get to it is "North Men". The same with Berserker, closest means "Bear Pelt". That was for special honour guards or special worriers. Sorry, I really love the "Viking" stuff, and yes, I do watch the TV Serie. I´m only human

We were in L.A. in the audience in a recording of "The Voice" in 2019, and a guy walked around with his microphone on stage to get the audience pumped up for the show. He came to our side and asked where everybody was from, and we screamed "Sweden!!", he immediately bashed us (for him, jokingly) for IKEA! He asked us why we had to have such difficult assembly instructions, that he would never buy anything at Ikea because of their instructions.. blablabla.. 🙄 Anyway, everyone else in the audience thought it was funny.. 🤔 Two backstage employees, that happened to be Swedish, had heard that and reacted with "wtf?😂". They found us in the exit que afterwards and chatted with us to make sure we weren't deeply offended. They said they were going to "confront" him later.. 😂

The people in the area now called Russia called the viking raiders "Rus men" alot of the Vikings stayed behind started settlements. That's kind of what Vikings did and setting up triad routes. So they became Russians. Now, i'm not saying that Russians are of Scandinavian decent. Some probably are, and there is a mix between Scandinavian and Slavic dna. The scholarly consensus holds that they were originally Norse people, mainly originating from Sweden, settling and ruling along the river-routes between the Baltic and the Black Seas from around the 8th to 11th centuries AD. They formed a state known as Kievan Rus', which was initially a multiethnic society where the ruling Norsemen merged and assimilated with Slavic, Baltic and Finnic tribes, ending up with Old East Slavic as their common language.

Some of their accents are pretty revealing as to where in Sweden they're from as well. Fredrik Claesson has exactly the same prosody that he (being from Stockholm) has in Swedish - look at the video where he translates hockey terms. Bäckström also has that nasal and almost kinda whiny twang that characterises an accent from Gävle, while Henrik Sedin's Northern Swedish accent shines through in his English too.

(The story behind him is quite fun though. *Supposedly* (there's no preserved video of this) there was a chef from Dalarna who supposedly went on a US cooking show to present Swedish food, became so god damn nervous that he just started reading the recipe in Swedish (with Dalmål dialekt) ) But - if you mention this to a swede, make sure to show them some clips cause most people can't really remember what the swedish chef sounds like.

One stereotype about vikings is indeed the iconic horned helmets. These did not exist, and i'm sure that while they would look intimidating to a foe, they would be useless in battle. Could you imagine facing off with someone with a helmet like that? It's a perfect thing to grab a hold of and tear the man down. And yes, we were warriors, but at the same time vikings were also traders. The view that the vikings only were strong brute berserks, who raped, pillaged and burned is a litte narrow minded. In reality, most nordic folk was simple farmers.
@Bragosso
@Bragosso 6 жыл бұрын
Simple farmers with a desire for adventure, huh? Not too many other people traveled the world like the Vikings did back then, remember this is not too far from the age of the Roman Empire. They traveled, looted, fought and traded all the way from north America to Constantinople. Few other people can claim to have done that until the age of colonization. And regarding the helmet, it's true the vikings did not have such helmets. Though there have been plenty of cases where soldiers have worn horn helmets. Just google "Teutonic Helmet". So "useless in battle" must be disputed, psychology, as you said, must play a role here. Sun Tzu said that wars are a moral contest that are won before they are fought. Looking intimidating surely played a big role, important enough even though they risk having a disadvantage in the actual combat.
@sabotsabotskij7047
@sabotsabotskij7047 6 жыл бұрын
The "teutonic helmets" with ornaments were most likely for ceramonial purposes. There is a version of a turkish helmet with a single pike on the top that they supposedly used to charge their enemies with. In most cases helmets in battle has been for protection only, and in most cases they prioritze seeing your enemy rather than intimidating your enemy or using your helmet it to fight with... they had far more efficient weapons wielded by hand to do that, as I'm sure you know.

Go-to place if you're young or need something basic. Vikings - A lot of the mentality about being tough/being bearded draws parallels to the vikings. But it's mostly something other countries mention about scandinavians than ourselves. Swedish chef - No that's an American talk show thing. Nothing Swedish about it except for the name. Just a meme.

That's what's so funny are the Swede's reaction to the Chef....that it has nothing to do with Sweden or Swedish culture, However, the character is rumored to be based on Lars Backman, a real Swedish chef that Jim Henson based his character on. So the weather in Sweden at winter is VERY different depending on your location. As I live in a coastal city in the southern parts, right next to Denmark, we don't really get any snow. There might be some snow in January-February, but because of the heat produced by the city the snow just melts away. Mostly the temperature here at winter lies around 0-5 degrees Celsius with harsh winds and heavy rain.

@Per Capita The team is named after the island Djurgården which is part of our capital Stockholm. On that island we have a lot of museums, one amusement park name gröna lund (the green grove) and our zoo named Skansen. Stockholm has 3 different teams that call the city home and comes from different parts of the city. Djurgården IF, Djurgårdens idrottsförening (sports association). AIK, Allmänna idrotts klubben (general sports club) and Hammarby IF.

There are alot of interesting facts about vikings. For one most People in The nordic countries were farmers. The term viking was for those that went out on raids (and often had a farm at home). They conquered pretty big parts of France (Normandie. Man from the north), and The british isles. Thats why you guys got your weekdays names from Like thursday (thorsday) and teusday (tyrs day). We also have moon-day and sun-day. Vikings kinda funded what later became russia as well. And if you wanna read about cool stuff The vikings did? Google about how they were often used as bodyguards by the byazntian emperor (present day turkey). Man, the vikings sure did travel

As a swede I have to disagree. I'm not saying he's bad at English, but you can still hear an accent. Swedes generally have a decent English vocabulary, but they suck at pronunciation and grammar (at least that's my experience from living in Stockholm).

0:28 - I'd say Claesson has reached the 3rd level of swedish-american accents. Listen to the word "very". Level 1: "värry" (this is the 'i am inga from sweden' accent where all consonants are pronounced way too heavily to suit the english language) Level 2: "wäry" (this is where you're not great at english and try to over-americanize, turning V into W) Level 3: you've reached pretty far but still sometimes make a sound which is a weird mix between a w and a v.

Vikings didn't have horns on the helmet. They had nose guards and the more expensive ones eye guards. The axe is wrong too, no double blade. We still are pragmatic.
