Hunting knife restoration / Scout knife restoration / Outdor knife restoration
In this video I'm restoring the old scout knife from Frost Mora made in Sweden.
This knife was a gift from a friend and first I did not think that it would be interesting for restoration,
but then I discovered that the story of the Mora knife began in the late 1800s in the small village of Östnor (Mora municipality, Dalarna county).
The knife cutler Frost-Erik Ersson had a crucial role in the production of Mora knives and
initiated a more than century long success in the production of these knives.
I hope this video will be useful and interesting for watching :)
I am happy to receive any feedback on my work!

Very nice restoration, unfortunately you straightened the guard though. The Frosts Mora scout knife always had the bottom part of the guard bent slightly backwards, towards the handle. It was deemed safer for young users to keep their fingers a little further away from the blade. Naturally almost impossible for you to know that though...

@Atelier12D 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your comment! 👍👍👍 Yes, you are absolutely right, today I found some pictures of old scout knives with a curved guard. Also in the old advertising brochure that is inserted in the video, it is slightly visible, but I thought it was just an inaccuracy on the picture. I will not change it on this knife, but next time I will be more attentive to details.

I think this is a very good opportunity to learn about our own biasis as makers here. Cause not to give you crap over your mistake but I see the mentality in alot of makers..I mean you saw the crossguard was bent a certain way..in your mind you thought "That doesnt look right, it should be straight." so you proveeded to fix it..then you said that in the picture of the old advertisment for the knife the cross guard was bent in the same way as you knifes crossguard was bent..and instead of thinking "Oh that seems odd..but maybe its supposed to be that way." No instead you believed that the picture in the old advert was in error...in error in the same way your crossguard was shaped. But you had already fell victime to conformation bias. I mean you are not from the area that knife was made in so its an honest mistake but...it seems that you learned a good leason from that. Im very happy you did. And as stated im not just grinding your gears for it..i believe truely, that its a great learning opportunity in general. so I hope your subbs who love your work (im a new one of those myself) will learn from you. Thank you.

Quite odd the guard is bent to keep kids fingers further away from cutting edge since it has cross guard. How they would slip to the edge even over straight guard? Here in Finland maybe best known scout knives are made by iisakki järvenpää, and they are really strange. They look like mini bowies or western europe style hunting knives, and not nordic. They are been made like that for over hundred years i think though. When i was tiny kid though i had basicly mini versions of traditional finnish knives without guards, and those were i think more common for kids when i was kid at least.

Hello! A wonderful restoration! It looks brand new! It's a nice looking knife...Do you plan to include a Scout sheath with it? I imagine it sharpens up nicely with a keen edge...I like the look of the straight guard, although I understand the original intent for it to be bent...in any case, I would not worry, sometimes minor adjustments are necessary - in any case, you brought it back from the "dead", & that's what is important...Good job! Oh, I was most impressed by your "rapid - fire" hammering at 1:50... ;))

Edgar, I enjoy reading your comments! 😍 I promise that for the next knife I will make a sheath! Regarding the knife guard, you are really right, in the original version it should be curved, but I did not know this before.

Great restoration, that’s a nice heirlooms piece! Does the linseed oil on the inside of the handle have any effect on the epoxy sticking to the tang?
@Atelier12D
@Atelier12D 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the great comment! 👍 Yes, you are right, linseed oil slightly affects the adhesion of the epoxy, but in this case it is not critical, since the inner surface is rough.

Man it makes me sick watching people think they "restore" old knives for views when they actually ruin them.... maybe look up what the origin actually is before you destroy it. This knife wasn't even in bad shape. Probably fucked up the grind too... Most of these videos look artificially rusted just for the video. It doesn't take much to get a little patina on carbon steel
