Our Dracaena is 40 years old. It's as tall as a palm tree. It bloomed many times and somehow survives. It blooms yearly and I adore the smell of its flowers. It gets minimal care, but somehow manages to do ok. We consider it part of the family.

That truly sounds so glorious! Congratulations for maintaining it so well! I would love to see a picture of it. I have had my dracaena compacta for 5-6 years and just in the last year it’s new leaves appear paler shade of green than the others, it’s not unsightly but I am wondering if it is a nutrient issue. Do you have any advice or suggestions ? Thank you.

This is encouraging!! I just got a 2' D Candelabra a couple of weeks ago and planted it in a pons media which is working out well. I'm nervous about watering too much. I have been misting it with Brita water that has sat for 24 hrs . How often to fertilize and what kind??

WOW! That's very nice! I have taken a top of a leafless one that was going to just dry in the the sun. I put that stem section in saibro (red volcanic rock) and that stem section put out leaves but it didn't root. 2 years after, this spring, I decided to put it in water and it finally rooted! Now it's potted in, basically, Pumice + Coco Coir + Worm Castings. > : )

About 70% of my dracaena leaves turned brown all of a sudden. I thought maybe I forgot to water it but now I think it was to close to the vent when I turned the heat on for winter. I cut the brown leaves off about 2 months ago and it's just now starting to grow new leaves. Just a friendly reminder to keep them away from hot air vents. 🙂

I recently bought a LOT of plants. -A Dracaena being one of them. I never knew how much I'd love taking care of them. However, being the attentive person I am, I notice a small yellow spot on one of my lower leaves and researched what it meant. I found out root rot can cause this due to an excessive amount of water and instantly knew I was watering it too much. The source said 5-7 days, whereas I had been watering it daily. Glad I hadn't killed her! Thanks for this informative video!

You are awesome! We were gifted our Dracaena at our son's funeral 12 years ago. We have struggled to keep it alive and now I have hope we will be able to care for it even longer. Thank you for making it easy to understand how to care for this plant! Also, I haven't heard mentioned if it is possible to plant the "flower" and get new growth from it? Does the flower really not serve any purpose to this plant? And when you say "self watering" is this favored from above or below in the planter?

Thanks for the info on the spider mites! I wouldn’t have even considered the concept of “giving them a little bit of water” all the time during the winter. I’m a recovering “plant over-waterer” so I’ve trained myself to resist the urge to water a little bit, quite frequently. Good to know! Lol!

I've just bought a small one at my favourite garden for 2.50€ . Hope this time it will survive to my overcare... The first one died for overwatering, so you're very very right when you say to let the plant dry completely before watering again. Another problem was dry tips, I think this is also due to overwatering, let's see this time... P.s. love it when you don't remember a word and you whistle while mimicking the word ahah, anyway it's quite stressful to speak a language that is not your mothertongue, we know! So, bravo twice! Ciao from Sicily

The flower blooms do not kill the plant. Yes it does suck more nutrients. The lower leaves may brown. But they live. Mine blooms every other year. The white flowers bloom only at night and close during the day. I love the sweet sweet smell that permeates the house at night. It also gives out a clear sticky sugary sap. I let all the flowers die off before I cut it.

weve got plenty of these at home and it grows pretty much everywhere, i cut ours every 6months cause they grew new trees so fast and even if you just throw the cuttings somewhere and even if the tip touches the soil it develop roots all by itself and about taking care of them doesnt need so much skill once they have shoots and rooted theyre like badass survivor. We also use them as our post for our backyard fences. ive cut souch of them and sometime intentionally burn them cause they dont rot they survive with little moisture.
