I went camping over on Santa Catalina Island, California and where we were there were no trees or bushes to harvest dead wood from for a fire but, there was a LOT of buffalo chips EVERYWHERE. When I say everywhere, I mean everywhere! So I saved my stove for another day and cooked on buffalo chips and pots and pans that we carried with us.

frybread was created in 1864 using the flour, sugar, salt and lard that was given to the dene (sometimes called navajo) by the United States government when the dene, who were living in Arizona, were forced to make the 300-mile journey known as the "Long Walk" and relocate to Bosque Redondo, New Mexico, onto land that could not easily support their traditional staples of vegetables and beans. this is a food with a history of resilience and survival, perfect for bushcraft!

Great tip. A little baking powder in the dry mix would put that over the top. About a teaspoon or so for that batch. I used to carry Bisquick on backpacking trips because all you needed was water and a means to cook the dough. Good stuff.

Dave, thank you for sharing, reminds me when i use to live in New Mexico, the Navajo would make fry bread about the size of a dinner plate and then make Navajo Tacos, oh how I miss those Navajo Tacos. Take care, stay healthy and God bless you and your Family always.

Dude! That looks so good! I used to eat Indian fry bread (that’s how they spelled it) when I was a kid at Navajo gatherings in AZ. I can’t wait to take my daughter camping and cook a batch. Thanks man! From what you said at the end I’m going to fry up bacon and use that grease ,and add oil, to make the fry bread.
