you sir... deserves all the accolades ever for calling it a COTTAGE PIE instead of a Shepherd's pie
@m0rce12 жыл бұрын
...do Americans not know that they are 2 different dishes?
@allkindsofoutdooractivities2 жыл бұрын
Well he started calling it cottage but slipped into Shepard’s pie a few times. That’s ok I do the same thing 😅

"Holy Crap that's good!!!" That signature quote would make a great T-shirt caption with your picture while sampling a recipe. That's an authentic and honest reaction that I would trust. I want to try that recipe. Thanks Dave. You and what you do are very much appreciated.

Just in case you didn't know, you can get tomato paste in a tube like toothpaste. Lets you use smaller amounts without waste or fears of contamination of remainder of a can. Liking the recipes and ideas. Thanks for taking the time to film and share.

Camping with Steve has taught me that.

One time someone I was camping with had some in little pouches a little bigger than ketchup packets. I've never seen them in the store but thought those were ideal.
@NickFrom12282 жыл бұрын
@@Just1Guy1000 Sounds like a great thing to do with a vacuum sealer, though it will take some work.
@donnacraneduncan54492 жыл бұрын
however, I put a can of tomato paste into an ice cube tray and placed in the freezer ahead of time. Once frozen, pop them out and put them all into a freezer bag and keep in the freezer. When you are ready to go camping or cook this recipe just take out one or two frozen tomato paste cubes ( 1-2 tablespoons), put in a to go container (keep refrigerated) until ready to cook the cottage pie. Just Wanted to share this info. Making me hungry for some good camp food!

Dave I've really been enjoying your cooking episodes, there's so many things that are so small that you can carry these days it's just crazy not to have them for your survival items. I buy a lot of the dollar stuff at the dollar store mashed potatoes k n o r r s noodles, chili, I think it's great that you're showing people how you can live on simple items put together great job Dave Canterbury as always. I've not yet to find the bag of mixed dried vegetables that you have Dave any hints on where I can find those at in the Indiana area, thank you. Dave I'd like to see you knock some killer Manwich sandwiches, they're great while you're out camping. By the way Dave your cottage pie looks delicious as AF. I miss seeing your cat in this video I can tell you two are close, I have one that looks just like yours Dave and I love it, take care.

To save some money, I put some regular plain store brand instant potatoes in a zip lock sandwich bag in the right proportions and preseason it. For cheese flavor, nutritional yeast works well and is shelf stable. If it needs milk for creaminess, I add some powdered milk, also shelf stable. You can also store your meat inside the little loaf pan so it doesn’t have to get scrunched down so much, which would also prevent the bag from getting punctured or popped open and leak a bit. If your dried instant potatoes are in a zip lock bag, put those on tops of the meat and not pan squishing should be needed much or if at all.

I get most of my firewood free off of craigslist. People in town have yard trees cut down for whatever reason all the time. They are in town so they can't burn it. All I have to do is go get it, might have to cut and split some but it's free.

one other suggestion i know you used four cheese potatoes but i like to sprinkle some shredded cheese on top of the spuds while it bakes and it makes a really nice cheese crust on top.

Hey David: did you know you can buy tomato paste in a tube (like toothpaste). All the main grocery stores carry them. This is a great way to use just a dab of paste and not waste that whole can. Just put the remainder in the fridge for next time!

Loving the cooking shows! For a small spice kit, you can use the travel Advil bottles on a shotgun card to have 5 or 6 different spices on hand. Alternatively, the small plastic gold vials would work for more variety at the expense of quantity...

Shepherds pie has lamb. For obvious reasons. But most restaurants don’t cook lamb other than perhaps a rack or maybe a braised shank because people don’t know they like it.

the original british 17th century, cottage pie was any kind of meat with any kind of potato , as potatos became popular with the poorer people, who were typically cottage dwellers. Later on cottage had beef and sliced potato,( not mashed) , to represent cottage roof shingles , and shephered pie (with lamb) had mash to represent sheeps wool. the scottish version of shephereds had pastry instead of mash. Cheese is a very recent addition to cottage ( not shepherds, which doesnt have cheese at all), and cumberland pie has beef chunks not minced

Dave, since you have the multi fuel stove I had an idea. How about a video on cooking on that type of stove with focus on the most efficient use of fuel. Having to camp without a fire makes me want to dry hump a running turbocharger but with the southwest lit up like the fiery pits of AH’s bowl irritation I’m forced to use a camp stove.

I made your chili Mac yesterday and got a couple packs of those loaf pans .. this weekend is meatloaf as I have the 48 oz original cup .. for this recipe I figure I can sub a small can of English peas and carrots for the dry veggies got to work with what’s available ,, oh yea the chili Mac is way better than that canned mess from campbells

You can find some on amazon but if you have a food dehydrator, you can just grab a bag of mixed and diced veggies from the frozen section of a supermarket and just dry them (but watch them because they dry faster than you might think).
