Except of course Stephan Grapelli who did this, and better, for decades before Mark even picked up a violin.

@@Gennettor-nc8kx Interestingly, a commenter in this comment section 10 years ago (@zenbob), stated that Stephane Grappelli was one of Mark's mentors. Mark even included him in the album “Mark's Heroes” in 1993. He toured with Grappelli for two years apparently and was mentored by him as a teenager.

@@themac6356 Nice to hear that. Alas he doesn’t have Stephan's talent. Mind you; it's excellent violin playing but not "from another planet" and there are plenty others nowadays who can do this - and better. None are as good as Grappelli though, as none of today's "Gypsy jazz" guitarists measure up to Django.

Actually Mark's first gig right out of high school was backing up Grapelli on guitar. He got the gig because Grapellie guitar player got sick right before the tour and David Grisman recommended Mark. Grapelli didn't know Mark played violin he thought he was just a prodigy guitar whiz till they hit the states, and someone in the audience yelled out for Mark to play violin. After the gig, Grapelli asked Mark to play some violin for him, and he was floored. For the rest of the tour Mark and Grapelli played tiger rag as a violin duo. After the tour Mark went to work playing mostly guitar with David Grisman. Mark and Stephane did a duo on tiger rag on one of David Grismans live album, can't remember it's name. Then Mark broke his skiing Grisman had to hire another guitarist, and when Mark healed up he went to work playing violin with Steve Morse. Grapellin loved Marks playing, as do many other great musicians. When I listened to his tone and phrasing on Appalachian Waltz with YoYo Ms and Edgar Meyer, I was floored it was so incredible, rivaling Grapelli at his finest.

To me, Wynton always looks kinda peeved as if he wants to tell someone off. How about the way he snaps the beat with his fingers before the music starts? The fiddle play can't be trusted to kick off at a certain tempo? WM's a top virtuoso but I find him a cold personality, musically and humanally (if thats a word). I've just come here from Harry James - what a sad contrast.

It reminds me a little bit of "theater". The Title says "Quintet", but there are actually 7 musicians, and then there is a person with a camera in the background at certain points during the performance. Also, each musician plays a role, both in synchrony and as a soloist. There is that saying from Shakespeare (I have to look it up), "All the world's a stage, and all the men and women merely players: they have their exits and their entrances; and one man in his time plays many parts, his acts being seven ages." The infant, the schoolboy, the lover, the soldier, the justice, the pantaloon, and old age. Many Shakespeare fans are familiar with Jaques's famous speech in As You Like It about these seven ages of man, which begins: All the world's a stage, And all the men and women merely players.
