When the festival was announced in January, it was immediately met with resistance and calls of it being unsafe and a scam. Naturally, as a current KZfaqr and former deeply unhappy middle and high schooler who never got to go to Warped Tour, I had to go. Now it's finally happened. Let's talk about When We Were Young Fest.

Radiohead lost their stage to wind in Toronto in 2012 and it killed their drum tech and injured a bunch of other crew. The wind is no joke once it starts getting a hold of big things.

Thanks Swell, glad you made it back. According to wikipedia - "Live Nation has been linked to at least 200 deaths and 750 injuries at its events in seven countries since 2006. From 2016 to 2019, they have also been cited for at least ten OSHA violations, fined for several more serious incidents, and sued civilly at least once for a concert incident." Having a monopoly on an industry definitely doesn't mean you're good at it.

That wind is terrifying. Big Valley Jamboree in Alberta had a massive storm come through about a decade ago and they refused to cancel it when they should have, and only made the decision when it was too late. A speaker was blown off of the structure and crushed a woman to death, and it was awful. No show is worth risking that.

I went on Oct 23 and honestly it was so worth it. I was at the barricade at the Black Stage for 5 hours including when Bring Me The Horizon and My Chemical Romance performed and felt fine. The security had a good eye on crowd surfers and everyone put in the effort to make sure they landed okay. Also they would routinely check on all of us at the front, ask if we were okay and toss water to us every 20 minutes or so. If anyone wanted to get out of the crowd people parted the seas and helped nudge them to the barricade where security pulled them out. I will point out, however, that in addition to security being great it was also a good crowd culture. Most die hard fans of these bands ranged from early 20s to late 30s and as such the crowd had a lot of experience at heavier shows and behaved differently than a super young crowd. There just seemed to be a solid understanding of concert etiquette and rock show etiquette. You didn't wanna be in the most pit? No problem this 6' 5" man with a mohawk will pick you up and move you to the side. You lost your ID? No worries, these girls in fishnets 3 rows back found it and passed it forward cause they recognized your face from an earlier set. (yes, this did happen!) It just felt abundantly clear that people in the crowd, at least from my section, had gone to these types of events and had a good understanding of appropriate behavior. After all, we were all super hyped to see our dream bands but not at the cost of harming others. Besides the quirks in organizing like the massive merch line and initial confusion on how to get to GA pit, I had an amazing time and got to see my favorite bands all in one place.

Yes! I had a feeling it would be okay. Also "when we were young" and first going to these concerts, there were other late 20s-early 40s people there to show us how to do things. We were taught how to behave. Someone made sure I didn't lose my bag at an event "when I was young", and now I will do the same.

I am old.. Like officially old enough to retire. I've been to thousands of gigs, and probably 100 festivals here in Australia. There have been incidents, including one I remember where a young woman was killed at the barricades, and this led to immediate changes being implemented, like split barricades etc. to reduce the risks. However, I agree that in general, the younger the crowd and the more inexpensive with etiquette = more scope for problems. One thing I've noticed over the years is that a good crowd is kind of a self policing beast. If someone is being a dickhead in the mosh pit, the crowd will work together to move them out before security has a chance to step in. I've also seen plenty of examples of the band identifying a problem from the stage, and calling on the crowd to get the idiot out. I remember the Red Hot Chilli Peppers just stopping mid song, pointing out the dickhead and telling the crowd to do our thing. We did, and they re-started the song, and all was well. I think people who are new to live music in general, but festivals in particular, think it's going to be a space where anything goes, but you couldn't be more wrong (part of my PhD was actually about the unwritten rules of live music). I've been to everything from acoustic sets to death metal, and everything in between, and at a good gig, everyone respects the rules, so you get things like the examples you gave... ID handed forward, helping people get through, bigger people shielding smaller people. On a good day, it's such a wonderful feeling of community and connection. On a bad day, it's bedlam. Go see every gig you can. Even go and see bands that you think you don't like much, because often seeing them live changes things. And look after each other!!

I remember going to music fests circa 2006, and it being like this. Then I went to one a few years later in 2012, and suddenly it's every person for themselves. No one chatting with strangers. Everyone getting really pissed if you tried to weave your way through the crowd to a better spot. No one dancing and goofing around. It was all so serious, and made me never want to go to another music festival ever again. I remember my friends and I being able to casually go back and forth between drink/food tents, and bathroom breaks, and then make our way into the middle of the crowd no problem. We were also able to take sitting breaks between sets pretty easily. Usually one at a time though, as the others stood around the person, to make sure they weren't stepped on. I also knew if I wanted to crowd surf, I would make it to the other side of the barricade, be helped down by security, and shown the way around the side of the crowd, and choose where to get out at. I would do this multiple times per show, and always find my way back to my friends no problem. People always let me through.

But I feel like Hayley was actually lip syncing for the majority of the concert 👀 she'd made a post about being sick before the show and the vocals sounded a little TOO perfect on most of the songs. Maybe she's just that good but I've seen numerous bands and no one sounds EXACTLY the same live, she did. The show was overall fun though. They were touring with foster the people and no one paid attention to them which sucked cause they were a headlining band at one point! But once Paramore were on stage it was great. I just don't think that concerts and festivals are a great investment for me. You have to be super wealthy, for it not to matter if it doesn't work out. If Live Nation were not forced(due to the fallout from lots of people dying due to their negligence) they would never have cancelled. I understand that cancelations really suck though, but it is the fact that Live Nation couldn't give any less fucks about people and safety, that makes me not want to support them. And ironically- no matter what you like listening to- Live Nation runs all sorts of music events.

"A lot of distraught emos wandering the strip," is such a fascinating sentence. I feel like this was nowhere near as bad as Fyre Fest or Astro World, but was nevertheless a mediocre to poor concert experience. Not everything has to be "the worst X ever", and it seems like everyone wants an event to either be The Best or The Worst when most will be a mostly good or mostly bad mix.

Tbf if I made a whole music career and someone used it to write 3/4 of a good novel with a deeply embarrassing fumbled ending using my music as its central named audio, I’d probably have a mental breakdown onstage too The novel is called Little Star I think and oh my god he just fumbles that message that man sharts the last moments of his book Yes this is inextricably tied in my mind to Bright Eyes.

I actually went all 3 days for work. We were staying at the Strat, and Hawthorne Heights decided to play there on canceled day 1 in the middle of the casino floor. It got so chaotic; the rideshare drop-off area was closed off, and you had to show your room key to police to be let inside the lobby. It was so crowded and crazy inside that making our way back to the room elevators was a mess. (My allergies are still also absolutely wrecked.)

Hi Swell, thank you so much for this in-depth video, it's always nice to hear from someone who was actually at the event. I know KZfaq comments are the worst way to get feedback, but I'm going to try it anyway. When you cut commentary into the video, it would be so helpful if that was the same volume as the rest of the video. Right now it's so quiet that I have to turn up the volume significantly, and then it blast my ears out when it goes back to the normal video. Just something to consider

I had a really good time on the 29th! Bummed I didn't bump into you I woulda said hi! My biggest challenge was getting through crowds from one band to another. If you wanted to see the beginning of a band you'd probably have to either stand way in the back so you're out of the crowd to get around or you'd have to leave the band you're at early for a decent position at the next band.

Happy you made this video! I went to WWWY on the 2nd day. It was one of the worst planned festivals I’ve been to because of the lack of planning. The lines were long!! there were hours long lines forming for getting to the entrance, when everyone could’ve just walked to the front entrance. The lack of bathrooms meant that the women’s restroom was at least 30 minutes every time. Lines that took an hr for drinks, food, merch…I feel like vendors were ill prepared. However, I went for mcr mainly and so for me it was well worth it. I do feel heartbroken for day 1 people.

My friend and I had tickets to day 2 and there were so many technical issues- Almost every set on the Pink Stage ran late and Dashboard Confessional's set was cut short because you couldn't hear them for most of it, the crowd was booing them because there was literally no sound except the main mic sometimes and i think the band thought the crowd was booing them personally at first, made for a real weird atmosphere. Then The Wonder Years on the Checkered Stage played through 3 songs, halfway through the 4th song Soupy stopped singing and the crowd thought it was a cute "singer wants to hear the crowd" moment until Soupy was like "you guys sound great, but we haven't been able to hear shit this whole time can everyone stop?" and then they were cut short a song from their set because of the delays. Both Paramore and Bring Me The Horizon had technical issues too but overall it was a really good show but the Black Stage was a bit difficult to see. Most of the bands on the first canceled Saturday were able to find places to play which was great, The Wonder Years, La Dispute and Mom Jeans all played a show out by the airport and then I know BMTH had a show at a club and some groups played the Emo Nite down the strip :) Also my friend and I were in line waiting for merch and you walked past and I was like "oh that's Swell!" but we couldn't get out of line to say hi!

Agree with you about live music. My partner & I also like checking out the openers. Enjoy finding new music that way. One of our favorite bands was an opener, & by the end of the 1st song, we were obsessed. Have loved seeing them get bigger & seeing them grow there fan base. Every one of there shows I notice nothing but good vibes from the crowd (& I hate crowds) & pretty much every person we've meet at one of there shows were has been lovely. We go see their concerts pretty much anytime they come to our area, and always try to get there in time to see the openers. Side note, I haven't ever really made it to a music festival, but so want to.

Someone suggested they started selling WWWY23 tickets to coincide with the Blink182 reunion announcement. Since Blink 182 is a headliner, they wanted to bank off their tour announcement basically, so people didn't buy local tickets and decide not to travel to Vegas if WWWY waited to announce the lineup.

I read that news of the Blink reunion and their tour dates *accidentally* lead to the exposure of WWWY23 and that’s why they have still only released one date. The WWWY team will (allegedly) drop the rest of the dates whenever they initially meant to announce it. This is all hearsay, but I think it’s very believable.

Yeah, but we're aware when there's going to be crowds and where to avoid. As a local, the only time I decided to go to a venue on the strip I thought I was going to die in a fuckin crowd crush if an asthma attack from being so tightly packed didnt get to me first (as someone who used to go clubbing back when I lived near NYC I thought I was prepared, dear lord I was not, it was pretty much being limited to standing still and getting choked even all the way in the back), that's why a lot of locals avoid tourist-y areas, the same appeal for us isnt there. It's just seen as overcrowded and overpriced.

i’m so bummed i didn’t even think about you being there on sunday 😂 would have loved to say hi. i had fun, but i think the only complaints i had was the space mountain level lines for the merch booths and how it felt rlly over crowded in certain areas? i’ve only been to a couple of warped tours prior to this and no other festivals, so maybe it’s par for the course, but i wasn’t a fan of the layout. the food areas separating the checkered stage area from the black and pink stage felt too congested n made me nervous so i mostly avoided that area. i wish they could have had individual merch booths for bands like warped, but get that’s not entirely realistic. the only reason i bit the bullet n stood in the line for merch was bc i was freezing and really wanted a jacket before Avril came on at the main stages. also the stage screens being so low/small bc of the wind made them kinda useless to us short ppl lol but i get the precaution.

Loved this video cause as a 37 year old on the East Coast I probably would have never heard about this festival without this video. I may be a millennial but never specifically identify with "emo" but I did go to warp tour in Charlotte, NC in collage (maybe age 20) where I saw some great performances from bands I liked and Loved it. I was surprised when I looked up the full lineup of this event you want to. I didn't see a lot of bands I was familiar with when I was was young (high school) lol but when you mentioned 2023 tix I checked out the lineup and saw way more bands that were big with my age range. Not sure if that was a purpose choice to cater to an age demo but I did think it interesting. As always thanks for your content. I always enjoy it so much. Stay Swell -

I went on Sunday. I love your videos so I wish I saw you! That festival was wild. I came from the east coast so the wind thing was laughable to me but I understand why they made the call that they did. My friend and I initially only had tickets for Saturday so we had to purchase them for Sunday. It took ALL day on stub hub and other apps to finally get them for Sunday. It was 450 each, initially they were about 330 each, so I'm waiting patiently for my refund. I wish they had better surveyed and monitored the line, because people were skipping like crazy and just running in etc. They weren't properly checking bags and tickets either. I still had a great time overall though. I cried during Boys Like Girls 😭

My wife and I were in Vegas the first weekend of WWWYF, and yeah, that wind was no joke. Totally don’t blame them for cancelling even if the timing was sketchier than a caricature artist. Ironically enough we were bar hopping with someone Friday night who was supposed to attend Saturday and I asked if she truly believed that it was going to happen, and honestly we were both kinda surprised things had gotten as far as it has. Heck, the lines for the pre-shows Friday night were insane and good on the bands who did the club gigs to make things up to fans.

I'm a former emergency dispatcher - police will frequently wait until a half hour or an hour before an event to get the latest report, if there's uncertainty that the conditions may not be too severe. Does it make sense? A little, that way events that don't need to be cancelled aren't. Is it frustrating? Absolutely, for everyone involved! In my area, the local emergency disaster response team weigh in heavily on calling events off. I feel like the stage collapse at the Indiana State Fair in 2011 is still in the minds of large venue organizers when there are wind and storm advisories / warnings. Largely the industry seems to take it far more seriously than they did prior to the disaster.

Went on the 29th!!!! I also went to the Lovers & Friends festival earlier this year in May, and they were so disorganized, water dispensers were pouring HOT water while there were lines of about 70-100 people for said water, people passing out, and someone thought somebody shot off a gun, causing a MASSIVE stampede. Fast forward to October 29th, this event was AWESOME. Everybody was having a great time, they made some adjustments with how spaced out the stages were, better set-ups, and the water dispensers were working great with barely any lines. There were also some sound issues, but very minor compared to the ones back in May. Very happy/lucky October 29th went off without any issues. I feel horrible for the people who missed out due to the weather though :(

My partner and I went for Sunday WWWY as General Admission. We greatly enjoyed the experience and any of our complaints were due to regular festival concerns. I do commend them for having enough bathrooms and constant attendants keeping them clean or stocked with toilet paper. However, I saw on twitter that the ADA Compliance area may not have had the same care which should definitely be improved in the future. I had the same complaints with Neon stage as well. In a few situations, I tried to listen to the bands I wanted to see for a song or two and then would leave because I could only understand the chorus by the drum beat.
