Sweni Lion Cubs Abandoned By The Pride?

Early in the morning we found the nine cute Sweni Lion Cubs in the road close to the bridge over the Sweni river on the H1-3 South of Satara Rest-camp in Kruger National Park.
They look lost and bewildered.
It seems that the pride, consisting of three huge males and five females, have abandoned them?
The cubs went into the safety of the Lala Palm bush and back into the road again - confused.
They were scouting and looking around for their parents.
Later that day, they seemed to get impatient and decided to left their safe spot to go and look for the adults in the pride.
Don't worry - Its normal Lion behavior to tell their cubs to stay put at a safe spot as the pride go out hunting to supply foot for all of the pride.
As soon as they make a kill they will call of fetch their cubs to join in the meal.
This time around it seems that the pride was not successful at first in their hunt and the cubs had to wait till the next day for the pride to return.
We will update you as soon as the cubs are reunited with the rest of the Pride. (And I promise you they Will reunite)

UPDATE - I spoke to a Field-Ranger today 31 Oct. 2021 and he reported that he have spotted the Lion Cubs WITH the females, some kilometres East of the spot I filmed them some days ago. An area not accessible by road. That’s good news! As soon as I get video footage of the Pride I will share it immediately. Thanks to everyone that cares about the well-being of the Cubs!

I don’t think they’ve necessarily been abandoned, but left while their moms hunt. Them wandering around in the open is dangerous, but at least they’re together.

This is not true. Lionesses abandon their cubs during pride takeovers.

I think it’s less about love and more about instinct. The lion’s whole purpose is to eat, sleep, mate and continue their blood line. They defend their young out of instinct. Not love. That said I’m surprised the Cubs are wandering around like this usually they go somewhere and hide, huddle down until mom returns. Hope the adults return soon as this is dangerous for them.

Aww!! Cubbies are adorable at best. In this situation the facial expressions have changed. All alone. Confused. Waiting patiently and looking every way possible for a sighting of the pride. What a situation here. They are definitely impatient and curious. Soooo dangerous for them. Hopefully all goes well with them. Tysm 💞

Cubs can't survive alone at this age and their so vulnerable oh I hope the pride is just out hunting. Were there strange males in the area looking to possibly take over? Lions never abandon their cubs! They go off to hunt and leave the cubs behind. They will get them when they have a carcass or, if they're not successful, they go back & reunite with them. However, cubs get anxious and bored. It can be a dangerous time for them when the adults are not present. I hope they'll all be ok.💕🦁💕

Lionesses usually abandon their cubs during a pride takeover. Hopefully that’s not the case here. I’m having flashbacks of when the Mhangeni lionesses abandoned their cubs during the Birmingham Boys takeover.

IN MY VIEW This is the first time I see lion cubs by themselves. It has always been my understanding an adult female always stayed with little ones while everyone else went on the hunt.

Or it could be that these babies are fully weaned and mom is out hunting for food I take notice that they are not roaming they’re not grazing they’re sitting there looking in all directions so I guess it’s safe to assume they’re probably waiting For their mama because they are not crying out in distress or fear

The cups are in full belly, The mother went out for hunting during the night, She is late coming back this time. It was not the first time she did that. It was still in the morning. Unfortunately the cups were disturbed by the big cars engine and wake up.

The pride probably returned and reunited with the cubs? But...I can not report on that. Kruger Park is huge and the Sweni Pride covers a large area where there is no roads and is not accessible for me! Rest assured this was normal lion behavior and as soon as I get contact with the pride again I WILL inform. Sometimes it could take weeks to spot a Pride again due to the large area they cover.

Lionesses usually abandon there cubs during a pride takeover. Hope that hasn’t happened and their fathers remain in charge. I know it’s a part of nature and it’s very normal in lion society but I hate seeing cubs being abandoned. Reminds me of the Mhangeni Pride abandoning the M12 cubs when the Birmingham Boys took over.

Once they reach the age of 3 they start to leave their natal pride . They are off to grow and Possibly become a member of another pride to work their way up the ranks or they create their own pride at an older age

Aren't leopards, hyenas, wild dogs, able to detect the difference in scent between cubs and adult lions? If so, in the absence of a strong mixed scent of adults and young, you could see how the cubs would quickly be very vulnerable. No wonder they're on edge.

no the adult Predators of any cub that is alone aren’t smelled differently than an Adult … that is a myth but that would be very bad if it was like that especially because Hyena have excellent smell distance and if this was true every time a Mom left their cubs they would be sniffed out and killed if the scent was different without an adult present …. I once watched a Clan of Hyena run from a Group of Lion Cubs that were alone without their Pride ….

@@indricotherium4802 I don't see them nervous. They are just waiting for the adults to return. The fathers must have done a pretty good job keeping the area safe to allow 9 preteen youngsters to grow up. Each of them is better armed and more robust than a wild dog. Short of a full clan of hyenas arriving, chances for them are good, I'd say.

That's what I thought that one stayed back with them or they were hid in a bush or somewhere they couldn't be found by predators. I'm really surprised to just see them on the road like this, poor poor little cubs.

I'm no expert but my opinion (based on watching numerous lion videos) these cubs have truly been abandoned and are rhey fully aware of that. Most lion cubs understand the protocols to follow when the pride is away. The fact that these guys are freely and openly wondering gives me the impression they have been abandoned and are concerned about their pride because they have not received communication from them for some time. It's nature. I hope we receive visual updates.

@@dallas-sf1ib I agree with you, their situation is worrying, uncomfortable, and liable to be killed by any hyenas or predators. I hope that the mothers will be fine, because they will not abandon them unless a strong and dangerous reason occurs. I hope Moms will be back soon, for these little ones are large in number, and it is a heavy loss that they perish

Why are there four cars following the lions? I believe it is wrong to have that many vehicles practically on top of the animals. Money speaks so loudly doesn't it?
