Just a typical day at Baros resort, Maldives. Join me as we have breakfast at the local breakfast, swim by our water villa and snorkel amongst so many incredible sea creatures including sharks and turtles.
There are 24 resident sea turtles at Baros resort and the staff at the resort know each one by name. Despite there being so many on such a small island, they were surprisingly difficult to locate. I had spent 3 days trying to meet one of these elusive turtles and finally struck lucky. Snorkeling alongside the majestic turtle was an amazing Maldives experience.
As well as turtles, Baros houses a healthy population of sharks. There are 3 types of shark that you can find here: Blacktip reef sharks, Whitetip reef sharks and nurse sharks. The shark that I frequently saw was the Blacktip reef sharks. I also saw a nurse shark from my seat at one of the restaurants. All 3 species of shark are safe to swim with.
I frequently swam alongside the sharks. I personally found it was a humbling, wonderful experience. Sharks really are beautiful!
So is it dangerous to swim with sharks in Maldives?
In the Maldives, it is not the sharks you need to be worried about in the water. They are very chilled. Needless to say however, sharks are still wild animals and so you should not provoke or try to annoy them.
Lionfish and stonefish are far more of a danger but if you wear water shoes and don’t stand on the reef, you should be fine. Many resorts also do checks to make sure there are none around.
I hope you enjoyed reading my brief introduction of the fish of the Maldives. Watch the vlog to see them in their wonderful reef home.

Snorkeling was by far one of my favourite things to do in the Maldives! But there's so much more to see and do! If you'd like to see me set sail in a traditional Maldivian fishing boat ⛵️ you'll love this next Maldives video 👉 kzfaq.info/get/bejne/itp4q5h_ybDIgmw.html

Yes, it was lovely that walking was the only way to get around. It meant the island was really peaceful - no cars, no buggies, no bikes etc. I was buzzing that I saw a turtle!

YES! Nothing beats the fresh fruit juices in the tropics. Yeah, the camera doesn't quite capture the sound of the parrot fish (the casing makes everything muffled). I tell ya, it was SO LOUD. Pretty adorable really.

Maldives is indeed beautiful. Such beautiful views while eating breakfast. Maldivian breakfast looks interesting. What is in it? That is quite a long walk to the beach. How far is it? Glad you saw some turtles. I guess learning basic freediving is essential when traveling to Maldives. I should learn before heading there 😅 Watching your video makes me want to go to a warm beach. Haha. Waters here in new zealand is quite cold even in summer so I dare not swim. Love the sunset views!
@EllaMcKendrick

The Maldivian breakfast consists of Maldivian Tuna Omelette, Tuna Mashuni and Chapatti. It was lovely and had some spice to it! I actually put my hiking app on to time my walk one day (I only remembered though after I'd finished walking the bungalow part). The walk across the island was 0.18 miles so maybe that would be 0.25 miles including the bungalow part! It took me 5 minutes. Yes, although many parts of the reef were very shallow, I would have liked to have been able to get myself down to see the turtle so regret not learning the basics of freediving then. New Zealand may be cold but I hear you have no COVID! It's amazing how well your country handled the pandemic. I'm back in the UK now in a lockdown 🙈
@WanderingZena
@WanderingZena 3 жыл бұрын
Sounds delicious! The distance is not that bad if it is just a 5min walk. A good warmup before snorkelling. Yes, there are currently no community cases so we are free to roam around and explore our own backyard but still being careful at the same time. Stay safe there, I heard it is getting worse because of the new strain.

Nice video Ella, a bit too luxurious for my liking but a beautiful place to say the least.The ocean is so clear, you wouldn't think it was full of plastic, or was this just good camera work? 😉
@EllaMcKendrick
@EllaMcKendrick 3 жыл бұрын
Haha! Yes, I couldn’t quite see you at a place like this 😝 Actually the ocean was mostly clear of plastics. I saw perhaps two plastic bottles the whole time. The island is very eco-conscious so I imagine any plastic they saw, they would retrieve. Still, I felt sad when I saw those 2 bottles! The island doesn’t serve any plastic so I knew they’d travelled from elsewhere.

That turtle is so majestic! Underwater footage looks unreal like a different world down there. How many days do you recommend to see the best of Maldives?
@EllaMcKendrick
@EllaMcKendrick 3 жыл бұрын
7 days on 1 island was ideal. But in post-COVID times 2 weeks may be good, 1 week spent at one location and 1 week at another. I wasn't able to island hop as a result of COVID.

Lovely video. How did you find it just being on bed and breakfast there? Were you hit with a big bill at the end?
@EllaMcKendrick
@EllaMcKendrick 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! When I was making my booking I compared the benefits of just bed and breakfast with bed, breakfast & dinner. The price difference was around £200 per night and I worked out that there was no way I'd spend more than £100 per person for dinner each night. Plus the dinner was only included for 1 restaurant. If you wanted to eat at another restaurant on the island, you would have to pay for that separately, even if you were on the bed, breakfast & dinner package. There was a bill at the end but I'd been working out how much everything cost so it wasn't a surprise when I got it. I'm quite good at being cost-effective when it comes to eating! Still, it was one of the most expensive places I'd ever visited. But again, I had expected that!
