From www.swimmingpo... this video talks about whether salt chlorine pools will save money versus a traditional chlorine pool. While some sales people will claim that a salt system will save you money this is not the case. You will save on your day to day chlorine that you would normally be buying however the purchase price and maintenance costs for new cells for your salt system make it cost more than traditional chlorine for most pool owners. In short, there are a host of benefits to salt water pools that pool owners love but cost savings is not at the top of the list.

I had the salt water cell added and ozone generator to my pool when it was built two years ago here in Phoenix, I have had absolutely no problems with it. The water is always perfect. I clean the cell myself, I have the Hayward control panel that will tell me when it needs to be cleaned so I remove it and use the muric acid to clean it and put it back together and no problems.

We like it for the hassle free upkeep. With gas as high as it has been and the traffic in my town over the past few years, it’s a major weight off our shoulders. I only visit the pool store a few times a year to stock up on chemicals and always see others there with their empty chlorine jugs just wondering how often they have to make that trip.

Time saved = Money saved, but that's never added when comparing costs of a salt cell vs liquid chemicals. Also I can go on vacation for 2 weeks and not really worry about anything when I come back but a bit more clogged skimmer.

I have a salt water pool. In 25 years I've had to replace the chlorinator twice, most recently in Nov 2023 for $2200AUD. Without salt chlorination would I have spent $220 per year on chlorine? Probably yes.And the salt option is much less maintenance.

I bought 60K gallons rated SWG for ~$1.4K for my 14K gallons pool. Installed by myself and now it’s working on 20-25% power. If nothing breaks it should work for ~8-10 years without changing the cell. How much chlorine would I buy during this 8-10 years period with a year around pool in South Florida? Much more than $130-150/year. And no need to buy it, deliver, store and add.

I would think the true cost of a chlorine generator in the acid consumption. I have 5 on my route, and every week they each take about 1/2 a gallon of acid. A chlorine pool of the same size may take a few ounces of acid, and 1/2 a gallon of chlorine.

If somebody can't afford a new $118 salt gen(above ground) every 2 to 5 years they shouldn't have pool.

Hey Steve, Quick somewhat related question. I had installed a salt cell a couple of years ago and it works well. I do have to maintain ph accordingly. The problem is that we are located in a high calcium water location, the calcium is at nearly 500 ppm - ouch! So I notice the formation of white crystalline material at the pool return (into the spa area). I am assuming this is calcium carbonate (?) or another insoluble calcium salt. The pool surface is pebble-tec. Do you have any advice for mitigating, or even controlling this? Thank you !

What about if they ban the salt or whatever the mixture is for the pools? They banned (CFIA) sodium bromide for my hot tub, which is the reason I got the particular tub. We use Spa Marvel and bromine now. Any experience with Pool Marvel?

I work for a local pool company in Hamilton and we've been selling Hayward SCG's since they bought out GoldLine in the early 2000's and while we used to push it hard we've actually done a 180 on that since we've come to the general consensus that SCG's really only start to become cost effective for pools past 80,000L and even then the return on investment takes several years. The "expensive equipment but cheap chlorine" model of SCG's really only scales to large pools and long time use of the pool. For any pool under 80,000L your traditional trichlor pucks tend to be much cheaper in the short term and long term.
