Straight from the get go, let me just say, I am a big admirer of Canon cameras, glass and all that the brand stands for. This journey is more to do with moving on to find something lighter, that travels well, that, well... watch the movie you'll see what I mean.
For a full kit run down on what I use, the new shop front is here: www.amazon.co....
BIG huge shout out to Kevin Mullins, whose friendship and professional help I value. This is not a sponsored film by Fujifilm or coerced in any way by Kev, his channel is worth checking, if you haven't already! / documentaryeye

I have an A73 and seriously considering getting rid of it. I’ve shot Nikon for years and despite the specs packed into the Sony I just find the Nikon files better. I’m really starting to like the sound of the Fuji with this model and the new GFX50R. I want a camera that is a go anywhere with me type AND it can hold its own with pro jobs. I shoot weddings also and this seems like it could be a winner. My Nikon D4s is going nowhere tho.
@photowalk.podcast
@photowalk.podcast 5 жыл бұрын
I know a few photographic friends really invested in the A73. I haven't used the GFX50R and would love to... I will at some stage. So in terms of file... it'll be a chalk and cheese exercise between this and your D4 - but you already know that. For me, I'm lightening the load for sure, but I'm finding a new colour space sooc that I love. There are times over the last week I have raised my eyebrows and though, hmmm; "I prefer the way Canon do... (this and that)" but I keep coming back to how much fun I'm having shooting with these things... and I'm using them more! My work cameras never came out for anything but pro jobs, and I just don't enjoy using them as much.

I am in a similar situation. I had the Nikon D7000 for quite a while but going through the pictures I took in Finland, I was disappointed of the overall low light performance. Now I‘m unsure to upgrade to a A7III, the Fuji X-T3 or try a used D750/D810. The lenses for Sony seem to be very expensive whereas the APS-C lenses would be cheaper. On the other hand I won‘t have a fullframe sensor. Its a very difficult decision to make :(

Outstanding!!! I have the 1Dxii and the Fuji files are as good as the 1Dxii noise, color and DR. I don’t regret getting my Fuji’s (xt2-3). I don’t see any substantial difference between my Canon and my Fuji. People talk a lot of mumbo jumbo about sensor size, but between 35mm equivalent and 1.5 “cropped” the difference is (what would people say) negligible, for a difference I have my Hasselblad, now that’s a sensor. But when you ask me to travel light, to have fun and even for some work, the Fuji is always there! This is the Swiss Army Knife of mirrorless!

Great analysis, I was at Photokina yesterday and Fuji was dominating the crowd interest factor relative to their size in the market. The X-T3 really seems to be a fully baked product. The X-T3 really is one of the first mirrorless cameras that can allow you to ditch your DSLR without compromising. Unlike Canon and Nikon's Rookie Full frames they so hyped. Your customers can't tell its not full frame why bother with the big kit.

Regarding wireless connecting, on my XT2 and iPhone 8+ the most reliable way I’ve found to use is to do things in this order: 1. Turn on wireless in the camera. 2. On your phone, go to Settings > WiFi and choose your camera’s WiFi network. 3. Once connected, open the Fuji app on your phone. This works for me every time.

Good video, good to see you have come over to the bright side :) One comment about the tilty flippy, floppy, wonky screen, if they fold out to the side they are more prone to damage/knocks and also may get in the way of gimbal parts when mounting. I would much prefer an Atomos Ninja V mounted on the gimbal (and then record in 4:2:2 10 bit!). Also it seems that the whole world is complaining about this lack of feature, but its really only KZfaqrs, the vast majority are happy without it. Even the new Panasonic camera's don't have a fold out screen and whats more the Panasonic G5S does not have IBIS. Serious videographers don't use IBIS and use separate monitors, it only the casual videographers asking for a fully articulating screen and IBIS, food for thought.

First I have seen of you Neale and I enjoyed your vlog. I am a refugee from Canon 1DS3 which I reluctantly hang on to as I shoot architecture and use the Canon with 24mm and 17mm EF shift lenses. I also used the Canon for motorsport (note the past tense) with a brilliant Sigma 50 - 500mm tele which is knife sharp and fast focus but on the Canon is HEAVY to the power of 10! I would come home from a day at the track stiff and sore and hating the kit. Then I purchased an XT2 and I was back in photography heaven. An enjoyment that had become a chore became an obsession again. The camera is so intuitive and so like the cameras that I grew up with (now 80!). So I have an XT20, X-H1 and XT3 plus a suite of 'sharp as' Fuji glass. The fun is back in photography for me and all I need is for Fuji to release a 16mm shift lens and the Canon gear can go! A day at the track with the TX3 and a 50 - 140mm and 1.4/2 times extenders is a breeze. To your vlog. All the standard skin tones at the beginning off the Canon and your unhappiness with the Fuji colour, and then the 'different' wedding images at the end that look to me as if they were cross processed or based on Fuji Velvia jpegs, which I happen to love but which give quite unrealistic skin tones. What's the score there? Finally, the cityscape images at the very end are quite unsharp on my i27 Mac, is that just the vlog technology or are the images simply not sharp? Glad you liked Australia (different vlog). I have subscribed!
@photowalk.podcast
@photowalk.podcast 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks Robin for dropping by and you've been on this journey full on by the looks of it. That tilt shift for many would be the final piece in that jigsaw wouldn't it? I think the strange skin tones belong to the set at the dancing yes? It was neon and disco light hell, which would explain weird shifts in tone and that cross processed look. As for the cityscape pics, yeh that's odd, the video seems to soften them a tad... not sure why. The larger widescape of Sydney is actually a little soft yes. Thats for the sub and I look forward to chatting more.

I think you speak with the most fluidity of any photographer on KZfaq! I felt like I was listening to Jeremy Clarkson delivering a monologue about a Ferrari. I really like your post processing style as well. Keep up the great work!

@KentuckyMan30 thank you, that's most kind of you and much appreciated. The Clarkson of photography eh? Not sure I deserve that comparison, but I'll take that as a compliment for sure! I've taken some shots across the bow for this film, as well as some real nice compliments that inspire me to make more stuff, such as yours. Best, Neale
@KentuckyMan30
@KentuckyMan30 5 жыл бұрын
Well, for starters, Clarkson could deliver a monologue about the specs. of a dishwashing machine, then compare it to the older model and I would be hanging on every word. You have that same talent. Your opinions were not only well thought out, but the delivery is so natural and fluid. It makes someone like me (who is horrible in front of a camera) quite jealous! Haha. Not sure why there would be cause for "shots across the bow" as most of what you say is from YOUR perspective. So, those people are looking for anything to argue about. I don't have to agree with everything you say to recognize the great production value and concise, honest thoughts. Take pride in this video, because it was damn good. I'll be subbing and watching your others as well! By the way, I came to Fuji a couple years back after shooting full frame Canon and Nikon for multiple years. Don't regret it at all. Yep you're right in part. Sensor size does make a difference when dealing with those low light shots and the 5D3 to XP2 would highlight that, BUT... and this is where you're right, if you find your look, then those specs don't or can't stop you working with a camera. I have shot Nikon for 41 years. Still love it and the images I can create with my Nikon camera and lenses. I have added the XT 3 mainly because I wanted to have the mirrorless experience and advantages (not because of image quality) . Many issues for video I won't buy it: no IBIS, no flip out display, way too short battery life, no object tap to track AF, 20min 4K60 limit, 4GB file splitting (they say will get fixed in firmware by end of year though), no HLG (but coming end of year firmware they say).

Well one thing is for sure, Fujifilm do seem to listen to us photographers when we write to them. These are worth sending to them Charbax, though I appreciate your comment here. Interestingly the battery life is much better. I shot a wedding on 5 batteries the last couple of days. In the past, that would have been way more. It has improved. IBIS I guess all comes to down to size of camera, I am told, when I visit their stands and talk to their photographers. Thank you for dropping by.

@@photowalk.podcast battery life may have improved but my opinion is that the batteries are way too small, I bet Sony Z batteries or even the old Panasonic GH batteries have way more capacity. I bet you could have shot that whole wedding on 1-2 Sony batteries comparatively. How many minutes of 4K60 video can you record on a battery? I bet it's way too little. I wish Fuji would redesign the battery for X-H2 to have at least double the capacity.
@armdevicespaid
@armdevicespaid 5 жыл бұрын
@@photowalk.podcast them not including IBIS I think also is a bad excuse for them not spending the required effort and time to redesign how their camera body works compared with X-T2. I bet they could have fitted an IBIS in about the same sized form factor. Or they could have designed a just so slightly larger body to fit that IBIS in there and I bet most customers would have said it would have been worth it. You get much clearer photos and videos when shooting handheld when IBIS is available. IBIS on GH5 is so smooth and amazing, I think every camera should aim at having IBIS at least as good as on the GH5. Even if it's a challenge with larger sensors than micro43, they can do it and they should do it.

Very interesting to see. What I love about fuji is 60p in 4K. For wedding job You simply must have it and this is according to me the main reason why people (especially wedding movie makers) will switch very fast. Canon had no choice because implementing 60p would destroy the pro segment of c200. I wonder how long they will be able to follow this strategy of protecting other product lines. Coming back to the topic, being a canon system user for many years, the 4k60p and price is the only highlight for me if I compare this camera with EOS R. EOS R has much better dual pixel AF, for sure better colours out of the box, c-log, better screen and the new lenses are very good.

neale, i have now watched several of your videos and i love your comfortable, confident, and easy-going approach in your presentation style. simply good stuff, always - well done. regarding the x-t3 it looks simply fantastic - i don't make my "pound notes" with a camera (unfortunately) so an upgrade from my x-t2 and/or x-h1 is not imperative, but i love that fuji continue to push forward and create substantive new products - especially knowing they will continue to refine and improve the product for a long time to come. that focus on the photographer, the dedication to their product, and attention to creating a connection between the photographer and image-making process has created part of what makes up the soulfulness of fuji cameras.

You've nailed it when you suggest that Fujifilm are keen to push ahead constantly. They do seem keen to listen to photographers when they ask for features. Now I am a big fan of Canon in particular, but I don't believe they have listened to photographers on the street when it comes to the new mirrorless solution. I do believe they hamstring their products to a degree as has been suggested. They want us to buy cinema cameras and stills cameras, when Fujifilm and others to be fair, particularly Sony, have pushed forward to squeeze stuff into one box. I am a fan of all the brands pushing mirrorless forward, and I think it can only be good that they grow together.

I have just done the same, switch from a Canon pro kit full frame to the Fujifilm X T3. Having retired from event and sports photography, I know longer need the heavy pro kit. The switch, seems a backwards step on the face of it... but for the same reasons, I am very relieved and pleased with the switch. I am very happy with the picture quaility and capabilities of the Fujifilm X T3, for 'everyday' photography, but shall test it on more demanding pro shoots in time.
@photowalk.podcast
@photowalk.podcast 5 жыл бұрын
I know what you mean about the 'backwards step' theory and Ian, I wrestled with this for a while, I really did - it's probably what made switching a three year process! At one stage I even sold practically every last piece of Fujifilm kit, save an X-T2 and a handful of lenses. Isn't it strange how instinct kicks in, because that bag called to me every time I went out on a job, and often travelled with me. And now it's completely populated again. There are some tasks I still feel the way I used to work would have been 'easier,' but the balance has entirely swapped otherwise. And that's what made the final swap from Canon, not just a reality, but a practical and emotional one too.

I own a A7s iii and A7r iii plus lots of Gmaster lenses. A very large investment but I also own a Fujifilm X100T. I can't fault the quality of the Sony's but the camera I "enjoy" most is the X100T. Size is important and when you travel the last thing you want to carry for a whole day is any Gmaster lens. The only downside for my Fuji travel camera is no 4k ( and don't even say it does 4k at 15 frames a seconds that should have got the advertising standards on to them ). The XT3 is clearly amazing on the 4k front - like you said the shame is the lack of IBIS and the flip out screen - oddly they have it on my X100T but I am still going to get the XT3. Your review, and many many others, all seem to point to it being a real bargain and a lot of fun. Thanks for the great review.
@photowalk.podcast
@photowalk.podcast 5 жыл бұрын
Hey @ourtvchannel thanks for the comment, much appreciated. I've not used the X100T so I'm not familiar with it, though I did very fleetingly look at it for travelling with. Opted in the end for keeping my older X-T2 for those 'don't want to use the main kit' moments. I can live without the IBIS, and boy has shaky footage made a return to much of the doc work I watch and consumer on Netflix or the BBC; I actually think mine looks more than steady enough compared to that field. Flip out screen I'd love to see, and not just for vlogging... it comes in handy for all manner of angles and ideas. I'm hoping that a more easily articulated screen will appear in the future.

Thanks Neale really clearly put. I'm agonising over switching from Nikon to Fuji at the moment having bought a second hand X100-T a few months ago and I love it as my always have with me camera. Completely agree that theres something intangibly soulful about the images that come out of a Fuji. The arrival of the Z6 & Z7 muddied the waters a bit for me but on reflection if I want to change to mirrorless then I have to spend significant £ on a new system anyway. Still struggling with the not full frame thing but pretty sure I know where I'll end up

Hi Neale, I am from Mumbai, India. Most of journey of photographic journey (gear wise) has been similar to yours - Nikon's from the F to DX2s and then a switch over to Canon. Finally a complete switch over to Fuji XT2s in early 2017 - details and results chronicled in the FUJI X-PASSION magazine. However, there have been certain issues with the Fuji X series which the Fuji fanboys and X Ambassadors have never touched upon. Which is sometimes a complete shut down of the camera after it remains in a stand by mode. No amount half-pressing the shutter or toggling the on-off switch would turn on the camera. Intiallly I thought it was a dead battery and a replacement solved the issue. But over time I found that battery juice was not the issue. The only solution was to take out the battery and reinsert it before switching on the camera. Needless to say extremely frustrating in a cinch situation. There is only one instance in KZfaq where the photographer changed to Sony system because of this problem, and I believe the problem still persists with the new XT3. Anyway, would like to know if you have encountered this problem before and while you take your new XT3 through its paces, just to keep an eye out on this issue. BTW, I loved your very erudite and literary style of presentation. Absolutely impressed. Regards...

As much as I love my Fuji gear and just bought another XT3 for my weddings and Xf10 for travel, they take great pictures, great ergos and the colours are great all in reasonable light, however when push comes to shove and your light is fading & your on set trying squeeze the last bit off light out of a wedding location, I can't help but taking to my trusty Canon 1Dx low light beast in combo with the amazing Tamron 24-70mm f2.8 G2! which has amazing image stabilisation. this is an incredible tool for low light. I can basically shoot at night and bring in great colour especially in the shadows. which is the biggest issue with Fuji! the colour fidelity in low light is just not as good, and if your a bit under exposed then it becomes almost unusable and a B&W image. Im sure with the next generation sensors hopefully that's an improvement, because I really enjoy the Fuji system I have now 9 Fuji lenses and I really want two retire the Canon system all together.
@photowalk.podcast
@photowalk.podcast 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Elias, you make solid points with low light and squeezing that last ounce of light out of a situation - and yes, I think the colour fidelity is an important consideration as you mention it. Do I think my former Canon kit can deal with this in a slightly more comfortable sense? Yes, I think I probably do, though I'm finding this isn't as much an issue as ever I thought it would be - and I live in the UK of course, not known for it's year round summer!

For years I was a Canon 5D user, as you know by watching the film, and I'm sure you feel the same about your Nikon system. It's always a walk in the dark and leap of faith when you move system, but I've found the whole thing to be nothing but positive.

Bloody brilliantly done. It was just effortless. I’m tempted by the Fuji to.

Effortless... I guess that's a good thing! I've danced around the systems for a while now - it's a great time to be making images with mirrorless whilst these systems all start to grow real wings.

Nice Video, amazing. I am a canon user 5d Mark iv, and part-time photographer/filmmaker, I have invested canon glass almost 5 Canon L lenses. I am now looking to 4k film and not happy with canon reason is Crop, no 60fps, and huge file size. I also have Ronin-s which I use for the film. I have used EOS-R and not happy with it as it also has CROP and no smooth 60fps option, I am seriously considering Fuji x-T30 knowing that again I have to buy few Fuji lenses. My daily go-to gear is 2.8 24-70 & 70-200 zoom lens, Ronin-S & Handheld video bites, 5div, low light indoor party film Highlight videos. Max ISO I use 2000 to 2500 with 2.8 lenses, Love touch screen on 5d for focus and almost all my shooting is with Auto Focus. >>> With Xt3 I am not worrying about in-body stabilization or APS-C. Can someone please help me to make my decision: 🙌 Would it be good or this kind of videos? Is XH-1 better for me than Xt3? Is Autofocus god to track subjects in low light? Noise & AF in low light? Any things I need to worry about? Can I use Canon glasses with Adapter if so anyone tried how AF is good with Adapter for video? I understand new firmware improves many things inc Focus. Is it good in video AFocus? Thanks a lot

Thanks for your comment and question. So, I'm not a paid up Fujifilm ambassador, so I can answer your questions with integrity and honesty, even though I have swapped systems. So, first up, high ISO. Canon in film mode, may well be a tad better. Of course, it all comes down to grading. But I think Canon edges there. I know nothing about the EOS-R and haven't had a chance to use one yet, so I can't comment on that score. The touch screen for focus and staying with the person you select is still better in Canon too. I prefer the XT3 over the XH1, for ergonomics mainly. I have two XT3 bodies and whilst the XH1 is a super camera for film work, the overall specs of the XT3 excite me more. Autofocus on the XT3 is good and better with every firmware update it seems. I can't comment on the Canon glass adaptor, since I sold all my Canon glass and have never tried the adaptor route. I would say though that proprietary glass is always the best way to go. And Fuji's glass is really super. I've been very happy with those results.

I'm considering making a switch to Fuji or Sony, but for the reason which you disapprove of. The LCD screen, I'm a few that prefers a tilting screen, flip screen has no benefits to my personally.

First time on your channel and wow you are the first person who says about sensor in terms of skintones and color quality. This new sensor is a huge step in color rendering compared to older sensors with baaaad colors. Good job, man. Wish you all the best and congrats with new camera.

Thanks John.... yes, the skin tone thing.... it's big on my list of importance, actually above DR and ISO performance. These things are getting better all the time... there's a certain grit I love about this camera. Does that make sense?

@@photowalk.podcast same to me, same to me. I have a dream one day we'll get modern camera with sensor we deserve which gives colors compared to old Kodak DCS 645 Pro or Kodak Slr Pro, for people who can see not only watch.

One of the best reviews I've ever watched ,great job James . Have now subbed. I'm no top class photographer by any stretch of the imagination ,I don't have money to spend on the latest camera ,been a Fuji user for years, the bridge cameras skin tones and colours are so much nicer than the other brands ..... I presently have X series fuji which I'm loving . would love an x-t3 ......never going to happen . Regards Sean

@@photowalk.podcast My main camera is Sony A6000 with Sigma 16mm and a kit lens but i still own Canon 40D with C24-105mm and C70-200 f/2,8 is. Canon lenses are great, especially 70-200 but because of their weight and need to focus manualy with a6000 they rarely leave home. I guess it would be wiser to sell them and buy something native for sony e instead. Primarly i shoot pictures of my family and landscapes. Have a good day!
