Testing a Trangia burner with Alternative Fuels. What will happen? Will it explode?
In this video, a Trangia burner is used to boil water with denatured alcohol, isopropyl alcohol, Heet, Charcoal Lighter, Zippo fluid, paint thinner, acetone, and Coleman Camp Fuel.
This is probably stupid and dangerous, I do not recommend it. Only use the alcohol based fuels for which the Trangia burner was originally intended.

Typically, charcoal fluid is mostly low grade kerosene. Zippo lighter fluid is much more similar to coleman camp fuel. In fact, you can use coleman camp fuel in your zippos. And kerosene to light your charcoal and save a lot of money.

I have found methylated spirit to work very well, clean and a long burn time, in the UK it is easy to find.

Avoid the red bottle heet. It's great for emergency lighting but not good for cooking. It's a filthy yellow flame that will make a sooty mess.

Put 10% acetone with 90% of your alcohol. Those alcohol stoves are pretty hard to get going when below freezing temperatures. That smidge of acetone might just do the trick in speeding things up without overkill. Ever try using plain old lamp oil? Or olive oil? Of course lighting the olive oil might be an exercise in futility....

I use HEET exclusively , it is totally clean, it never stains the bottoms of my cookware, I also stay away from IPA, petrol's however most of my pots and skillets are SS and get cooked over a fire so they will keep a blackish soot coat, but I find I like the black look once I wipe off the excess with a paper towel, I dont mind the slight discolored look sorta reminds me of a blackening finished used on firearms. BTW get your fuel containers away from the fire source...lol

Extremely dangerous using gasoline type fuels DON'T USE THEM. Stick with ethanol based fuel, far safer and less chance of harming yourself.

Thanks for the video, answered my questions. Also I use hand sanitizer with denatured alcohol in it with my Firedragon stive and it burns clean. I wonder if hand sanitizer would work in a Trangia?

Liquid one, probably, the gel type definitly not (but the gel type can be used with just a little metal can and something to stand the pot on. But beware of additives like aloe vera.

ive never had good control with 91% alcohol , smokes out of control flames I as a rule just use 70% that's been my experience

Aside from the acetone and mineral spirits… the others could be properly burned in a multifuel burner.

As long as they fit inside the Trangia burner I think that would probably work. Any residue left behind by the burning Esbit tablets may clog up your stove over time though. It's certainly worth a try.

Coleman fuel is referred to as white gas, like gasoline without the additives.

Give it a try, tell us what happens. While you do that, I’m going to extrapolate a prediction from watching how all the other oil derived fuels went. Massive yellow flames, a reluctance to go out, eagerness to spread beyond the stove, more soot than you thought possible, decent cooking times.

I've been saving that for the next round of tests. Going to do Gasoline, Kerosene, Diesel, and maybe 2-cycle mix. I might also try octane boosters and other fuel additives too. I'm interested in testing things that might be commonly found in the average home or garage.

@@ShawnsWorkshop kerosene is meant to be burned by wicking it up and lighting the wick. I think you are asking for trouble if you try anything like kerosene or gasoline. Be very careful and have a fire extinguisher and someone with you.

@@ShawnsWorkshop just and FYI, #1 diesel, #1 heating oil, Kerosene and Jet-A all came out of the same tank at the refinery.
