In a film based on actual events, teenagers Nathan Leopold Jr. (Craig Chester) and Richard Loeb (Daniel Schlachet) share a dangerous sexual bond and an amoral outlook on life. They spend afternoons breaking into storefronts and engaging in petty crimes, until the calculating Nathan ups the ante by kidnapping, and murdering, a young boy. When the body is found, all evidence leads to Nathan and Richard, whose strange relationship makes the case one of the most talked-about trials of the 1920s.

Beautifly done in black and white. A visual delight. Of course, I always love to see a true story in movie style after seeing many doco's on the subject. "Compulsion' was good too. Thanks, uploader.

There is another film that deals with the same subject. It's from 1959, it was called “Compulsion”, with Orson Welles, Bradford Dillman and Dean Stockwell, and was directed by Richard Fleischer. And Alfred Hichcock’s “Rope” (1948) is about a similar theme.

An incredible film that deserves to be among the mythological films of all time both for the reconstruction of the story and for the way it was interpreted but above all for the fantastic story that managed to create a mix between the madness of the story itself and sensuality. Both actors were great and up to their roles but managed to make their love story good by bringing out their sensuality while being aware of making extreme gestures. The actors are both beautiful but as far as I'm concerned my eyes were only for Daniel Schlachet, incredibly beautiful and sensual actor in all his expressions. It is a film that absolutely must be seen!!! ... Walter of Rome

IRL they actually did ask for a lawyer, but were refused by the District Attorney. This was pre-Miranda, when the confessions could have been thrown out because their rights were denied.

Um...I believe the use of anachronistic props was deliberate (the opening scene mixing drag, caucasians and people of colour recontextualized, the artifice of the film set - including the very late 20th century folding chairs, etc. is a clue to that). There's all sorts of theoretical clap trap I could go into here (very 90s but alas, still falling from the lips of Gender Studies baby queers today) about artifice and authentic representation, about renegade counter narrative and such, but why bore you?

Yes- it is a brilliant art film. Influence of Luis Bunuel in some scenes. It’s not like it was intended to be pitch perfect as to the period. It has a dream like quality that was intended. I love this film.

This a free version of events though, I don't remember if in reality in this case they actually did that, blaming someone else. I think it was known soon enough who did it because of the glasses and because Leopold's driver testimony.

If I have one criticism of this film (which I don't; I have several - but that's for another time) it is the line at 42:35: "Killing Bobby Franks together would join Richard and I for life..." Both Leopold and Loeb were extraordinarily gifted (as exemplified by Dean Stockwell's icy superiority in 'Compulsion'), erudite and highly accomplished. They also came from wealth. And Nathan was a polygot; there's no way in hell he would have said 'Richard and I" - he would have correctly said, "Richard and ME' as both 'Richard' and 'me' are direct objects that the subject the 'killing' is joining. Now a great many people would jump on me for plucking out this single detail, but it is this single detail that destabilizes the motivations of this film for me. I admire the use of anachronistic telephones alongside costumes which - for a shoestring budget independent film - are remarkably accurate to period, and aesthetically I accept most of Kalin's 'Brechtian' distancing devices, but a distrust in the intellectual reach and authenticity of the film erupts when this 'slip of the tongue' causes one to question what, exactly Kalin is attempting. By all means disagree with me, but the fact remains, Nathan Leopold would not have used 'I'.
