Sure, newbs have their moments. And can be somewhat difficult, or tricky to spar with. They usually pretty awkward, but can be super unpredictable in their awkwardness, which can make it a bit challenging. Especially once you have grown accustomed to sparring more skillful and experienced opponents who move in more controlled and intelligent manner. But overall, newbs are generally taking alot of hits, over and over again. No one is coming in with zero experience and not taking alot of hits, or not getting picked apart by the people who have been doing it for awhile.

Having the weapon between yourself and the opponent definitely has more options for defence. I would belive as long as your weapon is in that spot when you get into measure, it is also possible to initiate with footwork for better stability. The arms are able to move quicker cause there is less mass to them.

Yes, but that 1) extremely limits your offensive options since with the blade already in the middle, you can't really generate force for a strike and 2) If your blade is close to the opponent, he will usually already deal with it, which then makes you have to circumvent his parry before attacking, which means you're moving the weapon first again.

Much like boxing, the name of the game with meleé weapons is reach. Generally speaking, if someone's weapon is longer than yours, they have the advantage and can kill you more quickly and safely without you being able to retaliate. There's a reason most guards and soldiers from Antiquity until the latter half of the 19th century carried spears and polearms as their primary weapons and not swords. It's all 'bout that reach. Pointy stick strong.

also worth noting that you dont need your attack to have power while you're approaching the target, but instead when you hit the target. although more power can be generated with more distance spent generating power, flesh sacks dont have enough resistance to make that worth the effort

As someone else pointed out in the comments, that makes sense in kendo because the most basic and common stance you'll use is with the sword already out and between you and your opponent. When they teach hema they teach you a few stances right away and a lot of those have the swords somewhere other than directly in front, so initiating with the point first is a good rule of thumb.

I think the reason for why this mistake is so common is because moving your body or hands first gets more energy into the sword, in a sort of sling like way.
@Drekromancer11 ай бұрын
That's a good point. There are applications where that's the right move, too. If you're trying to hit something as hard as possible with a hammer, you have to use your whole body for it. So we all instinctively wanna do an anime-style power attack during a fight, room But in swordfighting, there's not a huge difference between a normal attack and a power attack. Instead, the name of the game is hitting your opponent without getting hit - so it's worth sacrificing some of that force for safety.

Not a professional here by any means, but when learning about zornhut, I was taught to first move the back foot when throwing zornhau, is this instance an exception to this rule, or was I simply taught wrong?
@Tkoutlosh11 ай бұрын
I was told that a proper attack begins from the right foot and right hand. In the very moment when you deliver the initial impulse to the sword, you should simultaneously start moving. The blade is faster than the step; a skilled fencer should be able to execute three cuts within a single step. But true is the Zornhut is quite specific stance, because you are leaning backwards so you make reading the distance bit more difficult and you launch your attack bit sooner then in standard situation - so off distance and when you get in, your sword is already in proper position and this is why it is difficult for your opponent to judge distance and tempo precisely.

However doesn't this "warn" your opponent that you are about to attack before you do it? I mean, once I'm on my guard, if I initiate my attack with feet and only move my sword when I'm closer, my opponent knows that I'm attacking but doesn't know where. However, if I initiate with my sword, the opponent sees instantly where I'm targeting, and has more time to defend. Is this related to the guard, that keeps the sword behind you, leaving you exposed? Would another kind of guard change this? Thanks
@penttikoivuniemi214611 ай бұрын
This is the fastest way to attack, period. Of course if you begin your attack out of range, nothing you do will matter as you won't reach your target anyway.

@@penttikoivuniemi2146 nobody said you have to attack out of range, it's about reducing the time your opponent has to react. The inner you are into your attack when you start swinging your sword, the faster he has to be to parry/counter
@penttikoivuniemi214611 ай бұрын
@@romolocaponera7305 Exactly. Which is why you make sure to enter as close as you can before you initiate your attack. You just have to be careful not to let your opponent hit you first, because they will have an easier time attacking you when you close in, and once you initiate your attack it needs to be the fastest it can be, ie. sword-hands-body-feet.

Going for one move or letting a part move before the sword is a way I’ve caught quite a few off but it does fall under a bit more advanced understanding of mechanics of the duel.
