The Cane Masters self-defense cane, cannot be beaten. It is far superior by every measure to a sword cane. Thank you for sharing this Keith!

My Cane Masters cane can go through airport security with no problems, as you pointed out. A sword cane cannot. As a frequent traveler, that is a major issue for me. Plus, if you have defended yourself with a standard cane, you are far more likely to be looked on favorably by a jury should you have to go to court. If I took out a perp with a sword, even in self-defense, I am far more likely to be classified as an advocate for violence who was out looking for trouble. I will never carry a sword cane.

Just a note about the sword cane tactics. You can use the other part of the cane in your off hand to strike or block with. So, stabbing, slashing isn't the only option. A regular cane is still a much better option.

I think it's far more "James Bond" to have a more practical, universally-carriable cane that is designed to be used for both mobility and self defense. You can use everything from baton, escrima, and boken techniques (and more) with a battle cane, and it's legal everywhere. Were James Bond real, I'll bet he'd approve.

I like both options, the sword cane you have looks more like a decorative piece than practical. I have a shart rapier style cane coming from cold steel, 18" rapier blade and the walking shaft is sturdy hard aluminum giving you both a lethal and non lethal option. I made my dad a nice cane from a young tree on our yard, it was beautiful and very effective as a self defense tool. Both types of canes if a person was to use for self defense requires practice practice practice, if you got a person with a regular wood cane, same thing with a sword cane, without training using it as a weapon they will be in trouble. Minimal training is required with both options, dedicated training is better. In canada its against the law to carry anything whatsoever for the purpose of self defense, canada likes its citizens defenseless, helpless and open to attack. Over here sometimes its better not to ask permission

Thank you for clear explanation. Few thoughts of mine: Effectiveness - Just wondering, how can you 'disable someone to the point they can no longer hurt you' without hurting them? Swords/knifes too can be use in less-than-lethal fashion by cutting, which is more efficient than stabbing and more instinctive for untrained users. In addition swords are much harder to lose control of in grapple. AND you still have cane in other hand. This point should went to Sword Cane. Accessibility - Some Sword Canes may require fumbling around to deploy, but not all. There are retention methods which does not require more than pull the blade out. And, more importantly, even sheathed sword cane still works as cane. I'd gave this point as tie. Practicality - You are absolutely right that canes can, with training, give many more options. But please elaborate, without any details given no point should have been awarded.

Have several of both. I want to make a wooden J hook 12" dirk cane, with and instant trigger release of some design, maybe a rocker finger release. This got me thinking of it. I can carry my sword canes legally, but they are aluminum, noisy somewhat, difficult to carry, and heavy. Both of my existing sword canes are probably more difficult to fight with, even though I've customized them. I would carry and practice with a regular J hook Hickory dagger or dirk short sword cane. So long as it was still amply strong, and could be instantly releases from secure and quiet shaft scabbard. Wow! I already have my own unique design of fighting J canes and I just realized how it lends itself perfectly to this Oak or Hickory, quick draw short blade sword cane design idea. I gotta figure out what use as a high quality strong blade thinking a tapered pointed + cross section, or maybe a tapered pointed rod, like the Cold Steel QuickDraw. It has no edge, but can whack and puncture. Only thing about comfortably carrying a concealed sword cane EDC, is making a mistake and accidentally carrying it into federal facility which bans them or another facility in which they are not legal. I'm too aware to make such a mistake myself as I do not go into such places without thoughts on avoiding trouble.

The one advantage that I'd give a sword cane that you didn't mention is that someone who was extremely well-trained and well-practiced and had an extremely well-made sword cane would be able to dual-wield the sword with one hand and the remainder of the cane with the other hand. Essentially, the single cane would immediately become a bladed weapon in one hand and a blunt force weapon in the other hand. To make use of that functionality, someone would need to train extensively in dual-wielding the combination. I know that I could never be that person, so I wouldn't want a sword cane from that perspective. As a concealed carrier, an advantage to the traditional cane is that I can carry the cane in my non-dominant hand. If I'm attacked, I can employ the cane immediately and have a chance of stopping the attack with just the cane. However, I can begin drawing a firearm while I thrust the cane at an attacker. If the thrust lands squarely enough, the attacker will be thrown off his line of attack. I might need to make one more short strike, but I'm soon going to be pointing the firearm at the attacker. If he doesn't immediately cease attacking, I will then be in a position to use lethal force very effectively. I have two Cane Master's canes and one of the "bo-canes" that you made a while ago. I use the bo-cane more as a walking stick and mostly just walking laps around my yard. The other two canes are frequently with me in public. Personally, I think the traditional wooden cane has a greater "cool factor" for an older gentleman like me. It's distinguished in its own way and doesn't make people think that I'm trying to play young man's games. I also have a polypropylene cane for the winter when I don't want road salt on my wooden canes.

The cane gives you the option of being non lethal. Sword cane, probably very lethal! -just like my 9mm., I live in a constitutional carry state. Many do not appreciate how taking someone's life, screws you up!

The sword cane he has to compare with the wooden cane is a bad example of a sword cane. It has a certain amount of garish coolness about it, but as a sword cane it is pretty useless. It is for show, not for use. Some sword canes have release mechanisms, some do not. Mine does not. It is "locked", but it is pull/jerk to release. Some sword canes have edged blades, some do not. Mine does not, it is basically an epee - a stiff thrusting sword. The blade is just over 28". It is designed to attack your opponents internal organs. However, it is perfectly possible to attack joints although this does demand skill. The blad is square giving it considerable lateral strength. This means that a strike is effective as a defensive attack. Unlike the very nice Cane Master cane I have, such an attack will not result in broken bones except for small bones such as wristbones. An attack to the head can result in a nicely dramatic and bloody injury, but not death. Strike attacks are basically whipping your opponent with a steel whip. All sword canes have a joint between the scabbard part of the cane and the sword grip. This is a weak point. Striking as you would with a cane can result in damage to the sword cane's functionality as a cane. This depends very much on the construction of sword cane and of course the kind of strike you use. Defending your self will therefore often require the sword to be drawn. He mentioned weight. Weight varies of course. There is a 3/4 ounce difference between my wooden cane and my sword cane. The sword itself weighs in at 11 1/2 ounces and fair amount of that is in the grip. As a sword the balance is off, but that is in large part due to my choice of a metal crutch handle. It is however, far faster than the cane. Intimidation. Even at low speeds my blade makes a very satisfactory (and intimidating) whooshing sound. It also makes a very satisfactory sound when drawn. 28+" of pointy steel is also quite intimidating. There are 2 good arguments against the sword cane in general. 1: The legality issue; you can't take it everywhere and there are a myriad of diffent laws. 2: A sword cane demands more skill/training (particularly if you have a crutch/T-handle), thrusting attacks require presision. This is also connected to the legality issue, eg: a thrust attack to the hip joint that misses and puntures an artery can be problematic. Such an injury can lead to an adult bleeding out in less than 5 minutes and can be difficult to deal with - even for experts. The weak point (joint) is not a major consideration, but it simply does not exist if you have a nice stout wooden cane.

Ive entered the court house past the metal detector with my cane masters cane. Ive entered ballgames also through metal detectors with my cane masters cane. Ive never even been questioned about my wood cane.

Unfortunately, many people have been brainwashed into believing that the 2nd Amendment refers only to firearms when, in reality, it refers to ARMS of ALL kinds. It is the RIGHT to KEEP and BEAR arms with no caveats or restrictions on kind of arms. Just as laws restricting firearms are being overturned as UNCONSTITUTIONAL, so are laws concerning other arms. In 1791, there were no laws on the books restricting ANY arms... at least no CONSTITUTIONAL laws that haven't since been overturned. Just as anti-gun laws are UNCONSTITUTIONAL, so are laws restricting other arms as different SCOTUS rulings in the past few years have shown. I designed a strong, lightweight, and very traditional looking cane that conceals a 28" blade. Its shaft is strong carbon fiber and the blade is a titanium alloy. It is within fraction of an ounce of the same weight as a traditional hickory or as crook cane and appears to be one, albeit satin black. It incorporates the grip and raking surfaces similar to those on your canes but, as a last resort, can reveal the blade to stop a determined attacker. This could be necessary if the attacker is on drugs and incapable of feeling pain or injury thus continues attacking regardless of the number of strikes against them. As a disabled senior and veteran, I cannot physically withstand ANY physical attacks without likelihood of them being permanently crippling or deadly to me. I must consider ANY confrontation as potentially lethal against me. It is my right to keep and bear arms and I will exercise it as is best for me. A strong cane, sword cane, and a firearm are appropriate carry as escalating threats can be met with escalated response. I do appreciate your contribution to our safety. Thank you for that.

Sticks rule! I trained in FMA for a few years, and I consider myself very modestly skilled. We mostly played with sticks, some with knives, and a little bit with swords. I also know how to use a gun, I trained at the Firearms Academy of Seattle, and I once beat Marty Hayes on the draw in a plate shoot-off, but we're talking a difference of just hundredths of a second. If I had to fight a random stranger, I would choose sticks over knives, swords, or guns. It's too easy to get lucky with a gun or a blade. Sticks don't work unless you know how to operate them. Hand an untrained person a stick and say "Go strike that person over there" and they'll likely attempt an overhead "Caveman" strike to the head, which they'll telegraph from the moment they take hold of the stick. Even if one can legally have a sword cane, if something happens, when the police show up, there will be a tendency to think either dangerous criminal or skilled martial artist. If one has a cane, when the police show up, there will be a tendency to think helpless old person with a cane. Canes over Sword Canes every time!

Sorry. Sound intent and respect for that. But this is little more than an unsubstantiated sales pitch for your canes. Anecdotes and claims are not “evidence”. Sorry.

I would LOVE to have a good SWORD cane-- just as a collector's items--- (one of the original DARK SHADOWS canes---) but as I said-- JUST for a collector's item- and wall hanger--- because they are ALL HIGHLY ILLEGAL.. and would be WORSE than carrying an illegal GUN....
