Richard Marsden of the Phoenix Society instructs Adam in the use of the Polish saber. Part One, A and B were verbal instructions. Part two, was sparring. Part three is John giving Adam assistance. Part four and five is more sparring with Adam improving each time. This is a quick, informal way, to get up to speed in Polish saber. An experienced person can help rapidly guide a new student in the techniques, guards, movement and context (sparring). Video three was eaten!

Thanks for commenting. The curve allows techniques that you can't do with the claymores. An example is, with a curved saber, you can turn your hand and 'stab around corners', you couldn't do that with a straight blade. Make sense?

You saw our other videos with more experienced folk, and you'll see there is more mobility. Sport fencers bounce in and out of range because they just need to tag their opponent. We need to hit them with more force and do so safely so that they can't strike us. Rather than bouncing, we'll advance in and lean in and out of measure. When I (Richard) get home from our practice I'm going to send you videos of us sparring and of others who fight more sporty and you'll see for yourself. Stay tuned!

from what i observe that the polish sabre are acctrully more mobile than a lot of western europ sabre. maybe not as quick and direct compare to british and french school. but it has a lot more side away transversing foot work. and a lot of lean back and forth with their low back. more circular movement allow you to use slightly heavier weapon.

+Qiang Luo Cause western saber schools were developed quite late and if participants weren't tutored for warfare, their alternatives was sparing and duels I guess? Quick exchanges and shallow cuts was enough to decide who won the quarrel, there was no need in killing the other guy. Meanwhile, a century or two back, appliance of saber in self defence (like in Polish use) was that by gently tapping and giving your foe couple shallow cuts from the wrist rarely solve the problem... but cutting his head off or chopping his arm, does. It was worth taking a shallow cut from a wrist slice if you managed to pull off a full-shoulder swing. (especially if you were wearing something more then just shirt)

Yuri PRIME indeed. so is Russian sabre fighting, it has a lot of circular movement allow powerful and continuous cut. the saber fighting method used by chinese muslim are much similar to russian, ukrian and chechen saber fighting. in fact further the east, the martial art found more similarity with the Asian rather than Europe. i am a fan of russian martial art. its principle is more east, but has its own unique explosiveness.

There was a lot of close quarters fighting in war during the 19th century. Dueling was mostly done with smallswords, while sabres were military weapons. Look at 1796 light cav British sabre (which was also popular amongst infantrymen) and tell me it's a weapon made for shallow cuts. Later styles aren't inferior to earlier ones. Trading hits is never a good idea and was never taught in any tradition. If you try to give a big swing in 19th century fencing you will just get stop hit and if the other guy forms good opposition you will not harm him.

IMHO the Polish saber techniques are much more sophisticated and differentiated at the same time being more dangerous that that of katana. At the same time katana probably would break during strong hitting with that saber at the same time. Impressive profficiency of the men using fine, soft rounding moves, not simply "straight on" attacks.
