A Pioneer SX-1250 stereo receiver repair and restoration video. Old electrolytic capacitors and heat stressed/troublesome transistors were replaced. The power supply assemblies (AWR-106 & 107) which are known to be heat stressed in the Pioneer SX-1250 receiver was completely rebuilt. The EQ amplifier, flat amplifier, tone control amplifier, protection circuit, and power amplifier assemblies were rebuilt. The troublesome push button switches in the speaker assembly, filter assembly and function switch assembly were cleaned with Deoxit as well as the other controls. In addition, the four filter capacitors were replaced. This Pioneer SX-1250 was then bench tested with an audio analyzer. This was a top to bottom repair and restoration that after 40 years of service this vintage receiver needed. This Pioneer SX-1250 receiver now sounds great and will be reliable for decades to come.

Great video and channel!!! I lucked into one of these monsters,on a job site. A co-worker asked me to help him throw an old,heavy,stereo in the dumpster. Said it was too heavy,to do it by himself. When I saw what it was,I helped him load it,into my truck....... $500 later,I had a restored,and recapped,musical monster!!! Best $500 I ever spent. Sometimes it's better to be lucky,than good.

I used to own a Pioneer 1250 and the matching cassette tape deck and turn table in 1977 and sold it in 1990 due to a channel failure. I cried when I sold it when I became frustrated when a local repair shop couldn't get it repaired correctly and was spending too much money at the time. I always wish I could have it back working but it was too late. I didn't want to buy a used unit today as I was afraid that a used unit would give me a bunch more head aches. I didn't know that a full restoration could be done like you have shown me in your video. Your video has me feeling excited that I can again have my wonderful stereo system. I am going to buy a used one from eBay and have it rebuilt by someone what ever the cost and again put a smile back on my face. Pioneer need to again make them again, there is a market for them.

I am the proud owner of one of this, had many receivers of that era, Marantz and Technics, but none and I mean NONE can't touch this, not even the SX-1980, this is MUCH more reliable and for my ears, sounds better. Sad I live very very far away, in South America, Argentina, if not, be sure that I would send you the receiver to restore it!

I had that pioneer system about 12 years ago. I had Cerwin Vega Tower speakers. I think they were the RE-38 series 4 ohms? I had a 10 band equalizer. I sure do miss that system! That stereo was perfect for those speakers. I gave them a workout sometimes!

Great video, thank you for sharing. I own a Sansui G-22000 that I purchased second hand on 1985, it still turns on but one channel is not producing sound anymore. I have been unable to find a technician able to repair it, as I live on a small city on a 3rd world country, but I have refused to discard this receiver because it still looks impressive .. but nowadays my audio needs are fulfilled with a computer connected to a Logitech Z-5500, it sounds great but it has nowhere the power of the Sansui, which was rated at 220 W/channel. You've got another subscriber, best regards.

Really awesome unit. So very impressive. 170watts!!!??? Wow. Thank you for speaking candidly. I am guilty of ignorantly chasing the "100watt vintage unit" when infact an vintage 80watt unit would most likely be more than adequate. Im glad people like you have taken the time to make videos and share your knowledge and experience for people like me that hope to one day find a solid vintage unit. I also realize the value to a rebuilt purchase vs a cheap old unit destined to fail. Again, thank you.

I had my SX-1250 worked on by Echowars 7 years ago. Glenn did an awesome job on the amp/preamp board with a custom extended heat sink. I'm driving HPM-100's with it and...well, it's pretty much all that for vintage gear.

@@ibleebinU Excellent choice ! IMHO, there`s a BIG difference in having your gear worked on by a true enthusiast like Glenn, or taking it to a "general repair" type of shop, where they are basically just parts-changers, but not much more than that. There is a great community over at AK, with many real top-notch techs who share information with anyone who needs help. It doesn`t get much better than that . Happy listening !

Great video! Thanks for sharing. I have the newer model of the 1250, the SX-1280, and the SX-1980. Those power supplies in the big monster receivers can definitely wreak havoc on just about every function, once it starts to go out. I collected this stuff for YEARS and it was alot of fun ... In the "end" I had 5 JA-R2S Racks fully lined as "the wall of silver", (as my series of 5 videos here depict). Anyway: I still have some flora-scan stuff, some ash trays, and of course; Dealer Signs / as THAT was fun stuff too collect as well !. I still know one buddy with "The Rack" (Pioneer's Dealer only Rack with a gear drawer), and it's STILL is the "best of the best". After I sold all my stuff, all that now remains are the HPM-150's and a 1980 Receiver (with a 516 Table) .... "I just can't seem ta let it go" ... and I'm positive I'll never use it again. Jack "John" Doyle was a great buddy of mine (in Long Beach CA. / U.S. Pioneer Director), and Shigera Hayakawa (Pioneer's CEO In Japan), was another buddy of mine whom was THE PERFECT Gentleman / Friend / and "get it done" guy ! ... *THERE W A S A DIFFERENCE BACK THEN* !. Anyway: I love your video's / and your a "TRUE Audiophile" Sir.

I just had the opportunity to pick up an SX-1250. I have been looking for a nice vintage amp and I was fortunate enough to find a mint condition SX-1250 for a good price. Sadly it does have a problem that was disclosed at purchase. Having other vintage gear I do know they can be repaired and I did not hesitate with the purchase. I do believe this unit is from the original owner and has never been touched for any repairs, the unit barely has dust in the internal electronics. The problem with this SX-1250 is the left channel, It has a loud static popping sound even when the volume is turned all the way down, sometimes the popping stops for a few seconds and then back on and at times you can hear audio with some static. You can also hear the relay clicking/switching on and off. The right channel seems to be working just fine. I am not sure were to begin and living in Denver there aren't any competent vintage techs out here. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks

I was lucky enough to inherit an SX-1280 which still works brilliantly to this day. It does however have a very intermittent issue from time to time which could be related to those switches you discribed. Guess I'll find out soon ;) Out of curiosity, would you know what differentiates the 1250 from the 1280?

I've watched several of your receiver restoration videos. I see the effort you put into renewing them, and I'm quite impressed. But I have one question that's been bugging me. You seem to concentrate on the various amplifier, tone control, and power sections, but I seldom if ever see you working on the tuner sections. Do you generally recap them too? And do you align them for best reception afterward? Thanks in advance.

Great great tutorial! I have that same unit sitting a few feet away from me here on the shelf. I did a basic re-capping several years ago, but it does need the "works" like you did! Hey, what about the RF section? Tuner? Re cap that too? I bet doing an alignment would be a chore, and need some fancy gear to do it right. I need to find those big filter caps too. Thanks!

Thank you and congrats on owning a SX-1250! I hooked up my Sound Technology 1000A to the SX-1250, all seemed fine. If something in the FM section fails it probably won't cause a catastrophic failure like the power supply or the power amplifier. I have dozens of units to still work on in my collection that need attention more then the tuner section of my SX-1250. I may get back there someday.

You are giving so many useful tips for beginners, like me! Awesome videos, thank you very much! One question: how about the capacitor charge on the psu circuit? Do they get discharged by the resistors or do I have to discharge them manually, after checking them with a multimeter?

I bought one of these about 12 years ago before the vintage receiver market got crazy . It sounded good for about a year then one of my channels went out .I then decided to perform a complete restoration very similar to the one you have done in this video and the results were fantastic.When I bought the unit I was going back and forth between the sx1250 and the sx1280 . I never really had the opportunity to hear the sx1280. Do you have a preference? Love the channel keep up the good work.

How does the SX-1250 compare sound wise and build quality to the Spec 1 & 2 combo. I've heard that they are basically the same as the SX-1250 just separated. As always....live your work and attention to detail. I always learn something from every video you make.

I think I saw you were using an arb gen for the sine wave source? I think the residual distortion of the source may be where the .06% came from. With a very low distortion generator, I think maybe your measured distortion may have been less.

I’ve worked on a few of these, each one was a total basket case and needed a lot of work. I questioned whether it was actually worth the effort with the first one... it was, I set it playing with a high end Linn streamer and some Royd speakers whilst soak testing it, it sounded superb. I do find them a pain in the arse to work on though, I’ve seen a couple with weird intermittent issues, between failing transistors, caps, dirty switched and broken wiring making intermittent connections (broken internally where you can’t see). I just have a reels of wire now in the correct colours and gauges, I just replace all the wiring to better than new standards. I have Linn equipment throughout the house but I’d love to have one of these things to keep and play with, they’re that good.

I agree, the vintage equipment does take some work. After 40 or 50 years any piece of electronic's is going to have some issues. Once straightened out I believe many of these units will still be used in someones stereo system 50 years from now.

VAD - I'm looking to buy a 50 - 60 watt receiver from the golden era (late 1970s) that has low THD, great FM reception with nice clean overall sound. In 1976 I compared Technics, Pioneer, Yamaha, Kenwood, Concept and Marantz and ended up buying the Concept 4.5 because it was the cheapest and I was making only $40 a month delivering newspapers. I quickly found that the Concept was a little "noisy" and had poor FM reception as compared to some friends' Pioneers and Marantz. Which receivers would you recommend I look to purchase?

I noticed the shields ( boxes) on the boards look silver but it may be the video, they are normally goldish anodized. If you try to clean or polish them it rubs the gold right off , ask me how I know. Was wondering if yours were silver or goldish?

I'm not 100% sure but I believe they are the "goldish anodized". When I had the unit apart I never really noted the cover colors. I've never cleaned or polished them so I'm sure, it's original.

I have an Pioneer SX-1250 and everything on it works perfectly as far as I can tell - except for the FM muting circuit. The muting circuit, when engaged, is supposed to filter out static between FM stations. The idea is that a casual listener is only going to want to tune in the strong FM stations in his area, and is not interested in hearing the weaker stations, or the static that comes thru when tuning into the weaker stations. My understanding is that the muting circuit is controlled by something called a Reed relay - and that is likely the problem component. Do you have any thoughts along these lines? Thank you.
@vintageaudioaddict
@vintageaudioaddict 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, it could be the reed relay. They have been known to go bad from time to time. There is also a transistor in the muting circuit that could be defective causing the issue.

I love your knowledge on vintage stereo's but I have to mention something I seen at position 1628 the screws are Philips but at position 1753 the screw's are replaced with a standard screw. Did you lose the original one's. Just curious. My issue is I have a Pioneer SX1250 had a shop repair it at the price of a grand. No six months later there is no sound coming from the right speakers. I call the repairman he's since sold his home and left with no forwarding address and does not answer his previous phone. So being a non repair person I have been buy little by little some of the basic tools to repair it myself. To say I'm nervous is an under statement. But with no where to go, I seem to have no choice. I play it now just on the left A speaker and the left B speaker. Wish me luck. Or any pointer that might help. I bought it when I was 18 and now I'm 70 so it means a lot to me to have it still working.

In your opinion, which is the better amplifier, the SX-1980 or SX-1250 . I have an SX-850 that in bought new, I in 1976. I wanted to get the 1250 but I told my wife that I would only spend one thousand dollars on the whole system. The 1250 upgrade with speaker was going to go way past my budget. My SX-850 is a great receiver and has served me well...but there is something about the SX1250.

Your SX-850 is a fine receiver. The SX-1250 and SX-1980 are nice also. Really in my option they were all were engineered and built to the same standards. Sure, your SX-850 has less power and features but I wouldn't want to be the person in a blind listening test trying to pick between the three. When operating properly the three you mentioned will all do a great job reproducing music.

It's about $200 for parts including the filter capacitors which are more then half the parts cost. I'm a hobbyist that works on my own equipment so the labor cost is just my time. It's a pretty big job, figure 20-25 hours. I'm guessing for a full restoration by a good tech you would be pushing up against $1000 for the parts and the labor.
