They should talk to the rabbit hole. They have some pretty good glass blowers over there. It’s about 20 minutes from their shop.

Same. I did sorta feel like shouting at the screen the first few times they said cured instead of dried. Still cool, though.

Correct 7 days for 50% and 28 days for 100%. And many people believe the rock in concrete gives strength but its main purpose is to absorb heat

A little fibermesh 150 would have helped too. Not as much as actually waiting for it to cure but had they actually done so, the fibermesh instead of the lint trap or whatever would have been a big help

The rocks are mostly just to make it cheaper you'll hear that 95% of the time from the owners I've been laying concrete for 27 years now and I've heard them say that to the customers lmfao 😂​@@allenrhodes

Try some type of "ironwood". I built a deck out of Ipe. Pain in the ass to work with. You have to pre drill every hole with special bits then buy non standard decking screws or both will just snap.

A common trick I use to help with a low compression engine to see how it runs. I use some oil on the piston. Pour it down the spark plus take up extra ring spacing. Smoky but works

Can vouch, did it on my last built motor. Oil holds just enough to get that initial compression going.

yeppers thats how I would always tell if I had a ring issue or a valve issue... ring issue id see great increase in compression.. valve issue id see minimal increase

you could try adding fiberglass fibers to the cement for strength. it also takes about a week for concrete to hit half strength and a month for full strength. I also think you'd be better off trying to cut the ring grooves rather than molding them

A fiberglass window screen would do a tolerable job if it were spiraled or soaked and wadded, then vibrated in the mold, I imagine.

Yeah and for maximum strenght the part should be cured under water or kept moist until the 1 month mark

EXACTLY! The comment said "reinforced concrete" not normal cheap stuff. They didn't even do the suggestion right. This needs to be redone correctly with a fiber-reinforced concrete such as Fibercrete.

Lol real science was making them out of light weight aluminum and realizing they last for thousands of hours. This is literally going backwards. My 10 year old saw this and said that wouldn't last at all. I hugged him and told him how proud I was to have so much common sense at a young age like we did generations ago !!!

Try hydraulic cement . Cures much faster,stronger, smoother, not permeable (waterproof), and no rocks. Lowe’s and hd both have it

Steve cool as hell nice first attempt. Fiberglass reinforcement in the concrete. You need stronger concrete and a lot longer cure time. 30 days minimum. Cut the ring grooves in with diamond saw. Polish head. Might be worth sealing concrete as well prior to running it. Possibly have a pro mix designer on the concrete. Box store is a mistake. Love it!

maybe use rubber rings with the concrete piston, and use smth like layered chicken wire as rebar. might work, but concrete might be too brittle xD

Why not cast an aluminum piston out of recycled cans or old engine parts? You could use the rest of the concrete for the mold.

if they do this they should oversize it a bit, because it will definitely shrink when kiln dried, and then cut it/sand it to proper dimensions very carefully
