Sy Hersh: Backing Assad's Ouster, Has Hillary Clinton Forgotten the Lessons of Iraq & Libya?

At Saturday’s Democratic presidential debate, front-runner Hillary Clinton rejected what she called a "false choice" between defeating the Islamic State and overthrowing Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad. "We will not get the support on the ground in Syria to dislodge ISIS if the fighters there who are not associated with ISIS, but whose principal goal is getting rid of Assad, don’t believe there is a political, diplomatic channel that is ongoing," Clinton said. Rivals Bernie Sanders and Martin O’Malley disagreed, saying it is not for the U.S. to decide Assad’s fate. "I think there should be learning curves with people with that kind of power," Hersh says of Clinton. "I think what happened in Libya should have instructed anybody in the government, including the president, that when you depose a dictator, you have to be aware of what is going to come next and think long and hard about what you’re going to do. I think, by any standard, getting rid of Gaddafi has proven to be a horrible event. It was a terrible decision, and we seem not to have learned enough from it."

+Mattydigs Not? Hillary said she wants to install a "No fly zone" in Syria..... So what are they gonna shoot down Russian planes? Go in and try to take out the most advanced surface to air missile system ever invented by Mankind? While Dog fighting SU-37's? She advocated for war with Russia here.... Bernie Advocated for diplomacy.... They could not be more night and day. For anyone that takes foreign policy Seriously.... This threw up every red flag that you could imagine.

DootDoot He wants to overthrow assad and 'move towards democratic societies' in the middle east. These are facts. He stated this in the nov. 14 debate. So do you support that? Not so night and day on that particular issue, it seems.

Mattydigs He supported diplomatic relations with the international community to deal with the "Syrian Crisis" He has been one of the loudest people in the political scene saying the entire Syrian Crisis started from a Global Warming disaster... Which is what actually happened, One of the longest nastiest droughts in human history causing their entire agrarian population to migrate to the cities. If you are working diplomatically WITH Russia as he has said countless times... Do you really think that would be about removing Assad? This is NIGHT AND DAY... From Hillary's position about installing a No Fly Zone and essentially starting a war with Russia.

+Mattydigs Bernie won't try to oust Assad and ISIS at the Same time like Hillary. Bernie has a more balanced approach. I trust Bernie more than any other candidate. The Gung-ho Republicans will start WW III.

Fluffy Bunny Ok, lol, I'll run with you on this. So in 60+ years of US meddling in middle eastern affairs, when has that ever worked out? What gives you any amount of faith whatsoever that that would turn out different from Libya, Iraq or any other time western action has directly or indirectly removed a middle east dictator? btw Putin has sworn to defend Assad from what I understand. If Russia jumps in against the U.S., china jumps in, then japan, Iran, others possibly. Boom WW3.

Why doesn't Kerry run for president? Because he's tired and sick of it? -I can understand that. Though he is experienced and he really knows what's going on. Kerry, at least for me scores a lot of points just talking to leaders all over the world, and he also seem to understand them.

+Mattydigs Watch the piece of the debate that speaks of this and listen more carefully. It appears you missed what Bernie was saying. Also, thanks to Clinton's 1996 Telecomunications Act pieces of the debate are all you can get. Our First Amendment right to political speech has been usurped by the Monopoly Corporate Media.
